So no news yet! I have a bit of an update though - they've tried all the old wives tales - except spicy food! My first grandchild is well and truly holding on - just like Bradley himself did, actually. He was two weeks late. And something happened that made me very glad of that - did this every happen to any of you? Back in the day - I'm talking in 1987 - if a baby was late, the expectant mum kept getting her weekly benefit. So I was eligible for another two weeks money - around £30 a week if I recall. So when Lauren was due on August 26th, and wasn't born until September 6th, I held on and didn't get her induced so she could go into the year above at school. I believed I'd get the same allowance, but I should have checked as they'd stopped doing the benefit extensions by then. Eeek! So for all her school life she was the oldest in the year, instead of the youngest. Nowadays if it's within a week of the cut off, I'm told they give you a choice. My great-nephew Arthur for instance is going to be eligible to choose being the youngest or the oldest when it's time to go to school, well, his mother Heather will choose. Matters were made a bit worse by my lovely lollipop being a big girl - 10lb9oz, yes really - and she kept that pace throughout her school years, mostly being a third taller than most in her year when she was little. But it means I guess she had the advantages that apparently the older ones get in learning and ability and grading.

So back to Brad and Kari and they are doing well, Kari is understandably exhausted now and I hope for both of them the new arrival comes earlier rather than later! Much love to my family and hope to have some other news soon!

(ps please note I will not be sharing massively on social media, mainly on this blog/website and qvc blog) Subscribe if you haven't already, to make sure you don't miss the updates!)

Meanwhile.,... here's a video I took of a little bubba - my niece Izzy - when she was a baby eight years ago - so cuuuuuute!! click here to watch it.

Book of the week - Dear Mrs Bird

Launching on april 5th, it's currently on pre-order on amazon here, including on a very well narrated audiobook. I love anything vintage, and this is right up my street. I finished it - the hard copy (paperback publicity copy) - in three sessions. And each night I looked forward to re-joining the blitz spirit, rooting for the heroine Emmy, and adoring some of the turns of phrase befitting of the 1940s wartime setting. Blimmin' loved it - with bells on. Please go pre-order it, you won't be sorry. More here on my RiWiSi blog.

Plus my clever author pal AJ has also been listed in the annual Guardian Faces to Watch 2018 author list - go here to see more - congrats AJ!

Big little lies bingeing

Well I did it - I watched the whole series - and it was amazing. It's led to another round of discussions about real people who have the same sort of bullying experiences in their lives and some super heart-warming stories of triumph over adversity. On Facebook I put a post which basically mentioned emotional bullies and was inundated again with messages from people glad this topic is being highlighted. And as I said - if it helps ONE person, that's fine by me. If you're interested, or interested in forwarding it to someone in particular in your life, go here to see the latest Facebook strand.

And go here to see Narcissus, part one of my four part series filled with stories, links and resources to help those who think they're alone in their plight. They are not - there's always help and support out there. I hope this rings true for anyone feeling victimised.

Meanwhile, do go watch Big Little Lies - bullying is not the only plot and the acting is amazing - no wonder it's award-winning. On catch up /box sets / DVD.

Facebook Vlog of the week  - go here to see one of my many regular 'vlogs' - this one when we went to #Narnia - kind of - via Banstead Woods! 'Like' the page to keep up to date on my general life!

QVC this week -

Here's a fab early bird look at tonight's (Sunday/Monday) TSV dress from Joe Browns - not their usual style at all is it? Very affordable and very stylishly classic. Watch out for several more sneaky peeks via my latest QVC blog - go here.

And watch out next week for a super massive bumper bundle competition you could win by RT and follow or 'like' and share my new Facebook page and twitter handle just for QVC! Launching next Friday (19th).

Have a great week!

It is with absolute joy that I nominate as Book of the Season, 'Dear Mrs Bird.'

One of my writing peers last year was Joanna Cannon whose 'the Trouble with Goats and Sheep' was a runaway success for Harper Collins. Well this year's 'lead launch' for Picador is Dear Mrs Bird, from a dear writing pal, AJ Pearce. Full story when it is released but for now, here are some tempting tit bits to entice you to try it!

ten out of ten.

London, 1940. Emmeline Lake and her best friend, Bunty, are trying to stay cheerful despite the Luftwaffe making life thoroughly annoying for everyone. Emmy dreams of becoming a Lady War Correspondent, and when she spots a job advertisement in the newspaper she seizes her chance - but after a rather unfortunate misunderstanding, she finds herself typing letters for the formidable Henrietta Bird, the renowned agony aunt of Woman's Friend magazine.

Mrs Bird is very clear: letters containing any form of Unpleasantness must go straight into the bin. Emmy finds herself dismissing problems from lovelorn, grief-stricken and morally conflicted readers in favour of those who fear their ankles are unsightly or have trouble untangling lengths of wool. But soon the thought of desperate women going unanswered becomes too much to bear, and Emmy decides the only thing for it is to secretly write back....

Irresistibly funny and enormously moving, Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce is a love letter to female friendship, Blitz spirit, the kindness of strangers and the art of letter writing itself.

go here to get it on amazon

Also read a really unexciting ghost story by one of my favourite authors Sarah Waters – but ‘The Little Stranger’ is not like any of her others that I’ve read so far. Skipped through the last few chapters as it got a bit predictable. Sad it wasn’t so good, but hopefully her next one will be…

Another year, another load of New Year's Resolutions? Well maybe take a break from them this year! It's exactly a year (on 6th) since the latest version of my food-relationships book 'Till the Fat Lady Slims' came out in bookshops, courtesy of UK independent publisher Choc Lit (who also published my first novel.)

Go here to read about it, and maybe join our Facebook Group for support, and perhaps this is the year food won't quite be the ogre it has always been in your life.

BUT! Stop press! If getting a good night's sleep is your current prime concern, do check out my midnight launch tonight (saturday - and on thru Sunday) of the new QVC Today's Special Value - the superb Sealy posturepedic bed - some options over £1000 off! It's the most amazingly comfy mattress (you can buy mattress or bed) and is back after selling out early in the summer.

Go here to get yours whilst stocks last - there may be some advanced orders if you prefer to pay later too!

Book of the week – just finished ‘Fingersmith’ – Victorian for pick pocket – about a case of fraud and subterfuge in 1860s England, love, cunning and surprise twists, Sarah Waters has done it again as far as I’m concerned! She also wrote one of my top novels, set in the 1920s, ‘the Paying Guests’, audiobook brilliantly read by Juliet Stevenson. Well done her. Read more here.

Blocking Writer's Block

And talking of writing, it's always awesome and inspiring to read an honest confession from a professional about their problems - especially if it offers a solution to others too. Julie Cohen is my mentor and in 2017, suffered an awful period of writer's block. Here's how she coped - it's in the form of a twit blog - you can read it here.

I love how she admits that "Writing is 99% self-doubt, but when you have that elusive 1% of confidence to hold on to, that sense of "I'm not sure what I'm doing but I can do this anyway", there's a quiet strength to you even when you're writing the wrong words. A lack of fear...Am I happier because I'm writing? Or writing because I'm happier? I think they're inseparable. I never really appreciated this delicate balance before 2017..." Gotta love this woman.

It made me tear up a little tbh. Thinking that my own inability to finish my key novel, French or Dutch ('aka 'the big one') was unique to me, and that I will be found out... Julie I salute you. I will finish that novel and you will be the first to see it, as agreed, my lovely mentor. When you are ready of course! It's true that there's always someone out there to help you - and if you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting. So take a leap and see what happens - I'm going to.

Speakmans Talking of resolutions - again - just a quick reminder that the famous Speakmans were on QVC with their new year new you #tsv DVD last Wednesday. More about them on our website here - maybe give it a go - you've got a 30 day MBG after all.

Another new QVC blog was just posted yesterday with lots of pics from my winter break, and some fab shots of new year with friends. here's a couple of them...

and here's afterwards at home! ( Reading this amazing book which I'll review when it's officially launched in April - gonna be one of the big successes of the year IMO, my pal AJ Pearce.)

Hope you had a fab time anyway.

And if you didn't, or if you were unfortunate enough to have your break ruined by some bully in your life, there's a new post bubbling under on Facebok, which will give rise to a new blog on my website I think. Go here to read the original blog Narcissus,  read nearly 10,000 tiimes, with resources about escaping bullies. And go here to my Facebook page to read even more tragic stories from people in the same situation - and several who have happily broken free. More news soon.

Facebook Page and New Twitter.

As you may know, I'm about to launch a big comp - in a week or so - which will be for a bumper bundle of products, to tie in with the launch of new QVC only Twitter and Facebook pages. More soon - do enter tho - someone's got to win them!

FINALLY - as you know, this is one of the very few places I will be posting about my new grandchild - due Tuesday - so stay tuned! It will not be all over my social media, mostly just here.  So stay tuned!

Join me tonight midnight if you read this early enough, or repeated till 9am Sunday (7th)!

Have a fab week!

Book of the week – still enjoying ‘Fingersmith’ – Victorian for pick pocket – about a case of fraud and subterfuge in 1860s England, love, cunning and surprise twists, Sarah Waters is doing it again as far as I’m concerned! She also wrote one of my top novels, set in the 1920s, ‘the Paying Guests’, audiobook brilliantly read by Juliet Stevenson. Well done her.

"London 1862: Sue Trinder, orphaned at birth, grows up among petty thieves - fingersmiths - under the rough but loving care of Mrs Sucksby and her 'family'. But from the moment she draws breath, Sue's fate is linked to that of another orphan growing up in a gloomy mansion not too many miles away..."

Not one of her latest - I will definitely watch out for those - but having had it recommended to me by a pal, aka Merryn Allingham (also a fab writer of period dramas, although not quite so racy!) I couldn't resist.

Happy Boxing Day! Hope you had a nice Xmas? I'm back at work tonight launching the Shark duo vac #TSV on QVC, at midnight, but first a round up of some nice christmassy scenes from my house to yours.

Spent an early xmas with my kids on 23rd too –

Had a super get together with family, as usual, three separate Christmas meals in fact. But I wanted to say hi to anyone who finds this time of year particularly difficult. Thinking of you as well.

 Nice New Year

Fortunately I have a few days off after 27th. I have always loved Christmas, but New Year has not been my favourite time, through the years, so mainly I have worked it. However this year I will be going to a New Year’s Eve get together in the village of Belstone with my lovely friend Alix, who has also threatened to kidnap me on New Year's Day to make me relax. She has promised several hours in front of a roaring wood burner, drinking tea, eating treats, and catching up with the box set of Big Little Lies. I have wanted to watch that award-winning series for a while so I may well let her! Have a lovely time whatever you do.

On Friday, my 2017 Review of the Year will be available on the Qvc Blog - do check it out, it will appear here. Very big year for me in so many ways! Top film, show, book, moment, funny, product, etc etc – do compare yours to mine and go have a read!

Finally I thought I would post a link to a winter quiz on the BBC website, see how much you know about Christmas. It is here – https://trib.al/tVdwe6x We played it on air as well as at home and some of the ten questions have weird answers! Just a bit of fun!

Wishing you much joy, rest, balance, and gratitude for what ever is good in your life right now. To anyone who is poorly, I wish you well. To anyone who is alone, social media can be a godsend. Watch out for my new ‘Debbie Flint QVC Chat’ Twitter and new Facebook page launching properly in the New Year with a massive bundle of goodies to give away if you follow and share.

Looking forward to getting back to Devon to have a few days relaxing with the dogs and some lovely country walks, and I will obviously post more of my vlogs (video blogs) as I know many of you really appreciate watching them. And see you on QVC around the third. Also there’s a massive Decleor today's special value coming up soon if you got given some Christmas money, and fancy a super treat! Lots more about what’s on this week on the latest QVC blog posted on Friday here.

Big hugs for a lovely time and a happy healthy 2018.

here you go!

It's beginning to look a lot like Xmas - tour of hall way at Retreats for You in Devon! Is it where you are? Done your decs yet? Or waiting for a special date each year?

What a lovely week I've just had with the very very talented author Julie Cohen and my lovely writing pal Sue Bassett joining me and new guest Hazel for the week. It poured and it poured, see here on Facebook! But we were cosy inside - they were writing and I was looking after them, and wrapping presents - when the dogs let me! That's them in the pic getting in the way!

Here's Julie's post showing some of the christmassy scenes at our place - such a lovely time of year - in fact, the 'most wonderful time, of the yeeeeear'

PS YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS FUNNY VID of spaniel Loony Luna too - so funny bless her! On facebook here - and do 'like' the page. Watch out also for a new page coming soon with QVC Chat and me!

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Seems a sensible one, given this weekend is the final of the Apprentice 2017 series. 'Apprentice' the Audible original audiobook however, is fictional - set in the 1300s and follows a rags to riches story of a self made Merchant way back when. 50 different voices across the three tales - this is the first.  Looking forward to reading it after I finish 'Column of Fire' by Ken Follett. Book of the Week here.

SING FOR MY SUPPER

Had a lovely time at last weekend's Good Grief Trust winter gala dinner at Wimbledon FC clubhouse in Kingston, where I sang - again. Only karaoke this time but it was fine in the end! Was very nervous again about it - turns out it's much easier when I'm not petrified of forgetting the words! Go here to see me sing a bit! And well done to Linda Magistris for arranging it all! Superstar event organiser...!

this week's QVC blog includes a new format with links to all the upcoming deals I mention, which will go live once they are available! Plus a funny blooper with Nikki from Lola Rose! Go to this link to see it on Friday once it's posted!

Hope you have a great week!

..

In the week that the Apprentice on telly nears its logical conclusion, this one popped up on recommendations. Am still loving listening to last week's Ken Follett book, so thought I'd buy this one to listen to next. Similar era - and lots of research once more, which brings those bygone times to life.

"This Original multicast drama blends history with fiction to tell the story of Jonah, a young apprentice from London who raises himself from poverty by wit and luck to become one of the most powerful merchants of the age.

A rags-to-riches tale, Jonah's journey spans the breadth of human experience, from the intricacies of Edward III's political intrigues to the cutthroat world of international trade, from the triumphs of war to the agonies of personal loss - love, friendship, joy, heartbreak and glory. Set largely in London, the Scarlet City, the centre of medieval England, the Scarlet City trilogy is a thrilling portrait of the age and the people who made it so rich, colourful and extraordinary.

London, 1330. Jonah Durham grows up in the household of his tyrannical cousin Rupert, and only his grandmother, the calculating Cecilia Hillock, recognizes his talent and intelligence. After her death he inherits a handsome fortune, bestowing him with both wealth and independence but also the wrath of his increasingly dangerous cousin. However, a fateful encounter with the young King Edward III is set to radically change Jonah's life and the future of English cloth production.

Told in three parts, hear Medieval London come to life in this historical epic, Audible Original's most ambitious production to date. Narrated by Miriam Margolyes, OBE (Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsRomeo + JulietMulan) and starring Douglas Booth (Riot ClubLoving VincentShelley) as Jonah, and Alison Steadman, OBE (Gavin and StaceyOrphan BlackShirley Valentine) as Cecilia Hillock."

Looks brilliant, right?

more here on Amazon - enjoy.

Ohhhhh I love my regular authors when they bring out the next book in a series! So it's time for me to dip into the Pillars of the Earth sequel, from Ken Follett - book 3, Columns of Fire. Set in the 1500s, at the time of the Spanish Inquisition, it's full of the usual pithy detail about life in those times and as normal, the narrator adds a touch of authenticity with his inflections even if it's a little affected sometimes. Enjoying it very much.

The thing I love best is the way Ken Follett intertwines facts about life in the day, historical events and real names and places, into his story. You care about the characters really quickly and he's skilled at creating conflict that drums up the narrative drive to keep you wanting to read more. Getting into a new audiobook is often a bit of a task, so anything that helps me get past the first stage of getting to know the characters and their needs is welcome. That's why I will always go back to his novels. Have read one of the 20th century series too, but this is the series I like best.

Christmas 1558, and young Ned Willard returns home to Kingsbridge to find his world has changed.

The ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn by religious hatred. Europe is in turmoil as high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty and love, and Ned soon finds himself on the opposite side from the girl he longs to marry, Margery Fitzgerald.

Then Elizabeth Tudor becomes queen and all of Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch immediately sets up the country’s first secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions and invasion plans.

Elizabeth knows that alluring, headstrong Mary Queen of Scots lies in wait in Paris. Part of a brutally ambitious French family, Mary has been proclaimed the rightful ruler of England, with her own supporters scheming to get rid of the new queen.

Over a turbulent half-century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed, as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. With Elizabeth clinging precariously to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents, it becomes clear that the real enemies – then as now – are not the rival religions.

The true battle pitches those who believe in tolerance and compromise against the tyrants who would impose their ideas on everyone else – no matter the cost.

It's really highly reviewed too - far more five stars than an average book rating. Highly recommended.

it's been another week off for me down in Devon. Next week it's back to welcoming lots of guests here again, but this week it was all about Christmasssss!

Bought lots of pressies and as usual, I laid them all out in my back room before wrapping them up ready to take back to London around 20th. It's a good job that a) I live alone and b) noone was here writing this week!

But it'll all be ok once they've all gone... and it's a good job I can close the door on that room next week once everyone arrives!! hehe!

Meanwhile, the decorations are up - here's an example - I'm sure it's going to feel very welcoming when you walk through the door. The tree is in the hallway - it's really the only place it can go, even though it's a big house. And I was very glad to discover a little place not far away that did a seven foot tree for just £36. I love having a real tree - do you?

Another thing I did was find enough batteries for the lights and hanging baskets, garlands, candles and so on. Happily, I stumbled across last year's box where I'd decanted all the old ones and some still worked! Oh the simple joys. Plus the alkaline battery re-charger - delight! But there are several pressies still to buy..

Secret Santa Surprises?

So we have a long list of lovely people who have helped this year, helped to make our lives more enjoyable and our jobs easier. Both at the retreat in Devon and at QVC, my 'proper job' (as they say in the South West!) Plus I'm having a little 'ladies' lunch' featuring a Secret Santa, on 19th in Sheepwash, then our annual presenters' lunch on the Thursday. So it's time to consider what to get for all these little treats - some secret santas and pressies - with a budget of between £5 and £10. From little yankee candles to the mini version of the super board game 'Articulate', there were lots of options. In the end we went with a bottle bag, and a little bottle of fizz, together with a surprise at the bottom of the bag - can you guess what it is? Answer at the bottom! total cost just a fiver! Fingers crossed they all like them - looking forward to seeing their faces!

Dontcha just love it when you get a chance to involve your kids in something to do with work? They don't, mind you - not always anyway! But since these pics were public, they didn't mind. Taken at Lolly's wedding, they are on a customizable case for the new Amazon Fire 10 inch tablet TSV from Amazon, which I'll be launching Fri night on QVC (1st Dec midnight) with my lovely telly hubby Lee Hohbein. (go here where it will appear from Midnight!)

I get warm fuzzies every time I look at those pics, and am very proud of my kids. And their partners, of course! As I say in my new QVC blog, just out (here) , it's only six weeks or so till Kari, my son's wife, has her bubba and I become a nanny! And this is the only place I will be sharing pics of baby on a regular basis, updates etc. As I don't want her / him to become a social media 'thing' - and neither does son, or his wife. So stay where you are for the occasional update!

I don't, however, want to become one of those who posts about grandchildren over and over and nothing else... but if you know me, as many of you do by now, I'm sure you'll already know that that's not likely, considering what else I post about!

Moving out todayyy...ayyy...ayyy!

Remember that Carol Bayer Sager song? Loved it, way back when. Well I might have had a few house moves in the last few years, but my son and his wife take the biscuit! They have moved no less than SIX times in the last six years!! I'm now in what I hope will be my long term home, in Devon (unless something extraordinary happens!) as I too have had enough of moving. But we went to help out a bit last weekend and had a nice catch up. Managed to put together the latest Ikea purchases without any 'bits' left over afterwards too! lol.

So we got on to discussing tips for having a clear out and decluttering. It's the 'separation theory' - if you can put it all in a bag, and put it away eg in the loft for a year, and you still havent' used it, then throw it out after that! It makes it less agonising to choose what to put in the bag in the first place, and you can always go get it, whatever it is, if you find you really do need it after all! Do you agree? Or are you like my sis Linda who says 'if in doubt, chuck it out!'

Festive Best Day

A big promotion from my lovely key charity Medical Detection Dogs this week - have a look at this post, and watch the video I did specially for the 'Festive Best Day' promotion that Medical Detection Dogs are doing in December - can you do it too? Click here

Book of the Week  - another superb outing from narrator Kobna Holdbrook Smith, reading the first ever PC Peter Grant novella, in the Rivers of London series, by the talented Ben Aaronovitch - The Furthest Station - more here. Also click this link to find out about the latest from Retreats for You, our guest house in Devon!

This week's blooper - happened when Nikki from Lola Rose didn't know her own strength!! lol. go here to see it and also see more on this week's QVC blog. Next week's will be the hilarious one from a trick I played on Mally live on air in a makeup show this week! hehehehahaha! Was crying with laughter that's for sure! Plus also on the new qvc blog, lots of sneaky peeks of the week ahead plus what I got up to with my lovely son up London...

hope you have a great week!
