The thing about finding an author you love, and a book in a series, is that you can immediately download the next one as soon as you finished the last one! So having ploughed through books 1 & 2, I immediately picked up with the continuing adventures of D.I Cass Jones in the somewhat dystopian version of London created by Pinborough, inhabited by a sub-culture with a supernatural element which bubbles under throughout this trilogy. And as you progress through the scintillating chapters towards the resolution, you can but think that the climax should be amazing!

She is very skilled at the detail, albeit in a fantasy world mixed with regular police procedural, meaning credibility is upheld throughout. If you enjoyed Behind her Eyes, one of last year's biggest sellers, and my book of the year 2017, do give this trilogy a go. I've enjoyed it very much.

(don't read this summary if you don't want spoilers for books one and two...):-

DI Cass Jones is still dealing with the fallout of uncovering a major conspiracy within his own police station when a terrorist attack rocks London and he finds himself called on to help with the investigation. At the same time he has his own investigation to worry about: young people are dying, apparently committing suicide - and they're all linked by the phrase 'Chaos in the Darkness', scrawled or sent as their last message to the world. Then he's given a note from his dead brother Christian, written before his murder: the three words - They took Luke - opens up a whole new can of worms, because Cass knows immediately who They are: Mr Bright and the shadowy Network. His dead brother has set him a task from beyond the grave - to find the baby, his nephew, stolen at birth. And as Cass tries to divide his time between all three investigations, it's not long before he discovers links, where there should not be. The mysterious Mr Bright is once again pulling his strings, and there's nothing DI Cass Jones hates more..

Deep within Sarah Pinborough's mind must lie something truly scary. And genius. Her book 'Behind Her Eyes' had such an amazing twist, I made it my book of the year. And this next one is captivating me albeit in a different way. It also has a touch of the supernatural, which I love. And great pacy dialogue - I can easily imagine it as a TV drama. Following a cop in a slightly dystopian alternative reality, it takes us through a police procedural with an anti-hero. If you love robert Galbraith, get this - and the narrator is great too. Well done Sarah, another winner.

"The recession has left the world exhausted. Crime is rising; financial institutions across the world have collapsed, and most governments are now in debt to The Bank, a company created by the world's wealthiest men.
But Detective Inspector Cass Jones has enough on his plate without worrying about the world at large. His marriage is crumbling, he's haunted by the deeds of his past, and he's got the high-profile shooting of two schoolboys to solve - not to mention tracking down a serial killer who calls himself the Man of Flies.
Then Cass Jones' personal world is thrown into disarray when his brother shoots his own wife and child before committing suicide - leaving Cass implicated in their deaths. And when he starts seeing silent visions of his dead brother, it's time for the suspended DI to go on the hunt himself - only to discover that all three cases are linked . . .
As Jones is forced to examine his own family history, three questions keep reappearing: what disturbed his brother so badly in his final few weeks? Who are the shadowy people behind The Bank? And, most importantly, what do they want with DI Cass Jones?"

Julie Cohen's hit list of fab short story format audiobooks or podcasts...

Julie is not only an amazing mentor and author, she posts about cool things on social media. On Facebook this week, she asked this -

I need a great audio book to listen to as I run, so nothing that I'll forget in between. Not a novel. Something with short stories, or essays, or something episodic. The last audio book I listened to is "This Is Going to Hurt", which was perfect. At the moment I'm craving nonfiction, memoir, literary/book club fiction, science fiction. If it's feminist and/or queer, all the better. Nothing about politics, war or environmental catastrophe. Recommendations?

And the answers came thick and fast - here are a few -

Mythos by Stephen Fry

The Moth series of podcasts

Pigeon Tunnel by John le Carre (he reads it himself too)

how to be human by Ruby Wax

and a whole lot more

To read the whole list, for inspiration if you're also looking to expand your repertoire of audiobook genres, go here on Facebook to read the post.

If you fancy a good read, lovely Jill Mansell’s ‘This Could Change Everything’ is out – and it’s another super family relationship drama with a touch of romance thrown in, as Essie struggles to deal with the fall out after the letter she wrote but didn’t intend the whole world to see is sent out by mistake…  Always worth reading, Jill Mansell’s books and she’s a lovely lady as well.

On the one hand, if Essie hadn't written that letter - the one that only her best friend was meant to see - then she'd still be living like an actual proper grown-up, tucked up with Paul in his picture-perfect cottage, maybe even planning their wedding.... On the other hand (if her true feelings hadn't accidentally taken the Internet by storm, that is), she never would have met Zillah and Conor - not to mention Lucas. And she'd never have found out just how much life there is to be lived....

The only bug bear I have is with the narrator's over-keen almost drama-student sing song way of reading the book. Jill's tale is great as ever, and highly reviewed on Amazon, but it's a little hard-going as the narration keeps taking me out of the story as it's slightly annoying. Nevertheless, the words are fab!

Just a quickie, to let you know, firstly, some fabulous news about Derek the dog.

Derek the dog is one of the puppies I sponsored at Medical Detection Dogs, and was able to name him. (After my late father, Derek. I also was able to name a second yellow labrador called Lesley, after my mum! See the posts to find out more, on my charity page.

Hope you can read it okay from the picture here!

Basically he is making good progress having been partnered with a new client/owner, alerting up to 10 times a day! Saving the NHS lots of money, and providing a much better standard of life for these partners, many of whom are severely diabetic and have problems detecting blood sugar highs and lows. (If you remember, The dogs alert them so that they will check their own blood sugar which no machine can do.) I am very proud to be involved, and very proud of little Derek who is now two years old :-)

Busy Repairing and Fixing...

My lovely daughter Lauren stayed this week and last, with her smashing hubby Nick the superb handyman, who got through most of my list of 24 things! OMG there was so much to do! Anyway, it was fab to be spending so much time with them both, and their crazy spaniels!

Lots more on my Facebook page as usual. Remember there are two now, but the QVC chat one is mostly for updates on the latest deals! (links at bottom)

book of the week

if you fancy a good read, lovely Jill Mansell’s ‘This Could Change Everything’ is out – and it’s another super family relationship drama with a touch of romance thrown in, as Essie struggles to deal with the fall out after the letter she didn’t intend the whole world to see is sent out by mistake… Full review on my RiWiSi book blog here. Always worth reading, Jill Mansell’s books and she’s a lovely lady as well.

By the way I'm still loving every minute of Sarah Pinborough's 'A Matter of Blood' - I just hope the ending is as surprising as the rest has been so far! Really well narrated too. She's fast becoming one of my top authors...

This week on QVC - I'm Queen of the TSV Launches this weekend! I'll be not only launching the Laura Geller kit tonight (Thursday) but also the wonderful Lakeland Airer with cover Friday night (16th) midnight, then on sunday night the Skechers slip ons! Goodness me! See all the latest on QVC blog here, and remember it goes live by Friday afternoons.

big hugs and have a great weekend! I'm going to - my first stint at babysitting little granddaughter Blake Katherine on Saturday afternoon - wish me luck! And come back soon for my next blog on my website www.debbieflint.com with pics!

- find out about all my novels and my own books, some in bookshops, some on amazon - check out all my paperbacks together! Very proud. More about my writing is here

I have to admit I got this because I thought it was about a TV programme in Hollywood. Lol.

Nevertheless I got into it once I realised it is a police procedural with a relationship emphasis. And the chief protagonist is a female officer.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.

Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

Highly rewed and high up in several charts online, this book sounds like a winner. And it's well-written.

The only drawback is the narration.. The narrator has good tone to her voice and does dialogue quite well. But her emphasis on certain words is awful, occasionally inserting a comma or even a full stop in the middle of a sentence, changing the meaning completely.  However I persevered and got used to it  he more I got drawn into the story. It's worth listening to. Nothing amazing, but does have you on the edge of your seat a couple of times. I will look out for his next one too. Apparently this detective is going to be in a series of books  and it's always nice, once you know certain characters, to follow through their adventures. There is a degree of conflict in one of the sub plots and I want to see what happens, so well done that author.

Awwwwww.

Bless my little granddaughter Blake Katherine Carter.

She seems to be a very contented little girl, and her daddy Bradley (still feels weird saying that!) is exemplary - helping out at home on his three weeks paternity leave. He is a good man, my son, and makes me very proud.

Mummy Kari is making sure baby gets some breastmilk and getting herself better after her caesarean. Poor love. It must be awful. I recall having reallly bad piles after my 10lb9oz Lauren, and that was bad enough!

Anyway this tricky time will soon pass, in a couple of months it'll all be behind them, and like nothing's ever been any different.

Great montage - courtesy of Lolly's instagram!

I was lucky when my kids were young because I had so much family around me. I know it was thirty years ago, but it felt like it was a perfectly modern era and in many respects not much different than today in terms of what we did day to day. Mind you, I still wonder how we ever used Milton bleach to clean baby's bottles - the smell meant there must have been some bleach still on them and no doubt the baby swallowed some. When you think about what we now know about gut bacteria it horrifies me.

What is reassuring though, is 'baby biotics' - assuming they work, eg here -  and have been thoroughly tested etc, which they must have been - to help poor little babies whose microbiome has been upset by antibiotics soon after birth. Especially caesarean babies. For those who don't know, watch the youtube videos from experts who explain how important all this stuff is - eg here. I won't go into it now, I'll do a special blog about it soon on my website, on the Back to You page. BUT if you have no idea about this stuff, watch 'gut reaction parts 1&2' on youtube - a super summary and introduction to the world of gut bacteria and their connection to ... well, almost everything in the body. That's why I take 'supermightidophilus 24' from Solaray, via amazon. And it makes so much difference to my ... digestion. There's a lot of info out there, believe me. and if you like books, just begin with 'gut' by Giulia Enders.

book of the week - is The Late Show by Michael Connely. A female cop on the night shift in Hollywood encounters a serial killer - a bit too closely. more here.

And look out for some Early Bird order links on QVC this weekend including elemis's amazing superfood bundle of products, then the latest from G-Tech, back on air after a gap of a few years. Looking forward to the launch with Russell Bristow my mate who lives near me in Devon!

Check out this hail! on the vlog of the week - go here to see it! Extraordinary and very cold!

have a fab week x

Such a fab article - and a great photo!

NR Times, the magazine for brain and spinal patients, explore the work these clever canines are doing.

It starts like this -

Like most dedicated healthcare staff, Kim is up early on weekdays. After a healthy breakfast, she heads to work, ready for her shift.

She spends the day embroiled in ground-breaking disease research and is rewarded handsomely for her efforts.

Unusually for a health worker, however, she walks on all fours and wags her tail when she’s happy.

Kim is a black Labrador and her employer is Medical Detection Dogs – an organisation that looks certain to have a greater impact in neuro-rehab circles in future...

Well it’s happened, baby is finally here. And I am a nanny! Some nice photos below.

On Thursday night, my son Brad's lovely wife Kari went into labour, and after a long protracted period in the delivery room, ending in forceps and an epidural, baby was brought into the world by the sunroof! Via an emergency C section. All good - she just got stuck. Now they are in hospital as she’s recovering from jaundice and a little infection but they will be home on Wednesday hopefully. They wanted to have a week of bonding with the baby to get used to their strange new world as a trio rather than a duo, understandably, then others can see her. I will hopefully see her this weekend :-) Yayyy! Kari actually reminds me in several ways, of me at her age!

So here she is. Meet little Blake Catherine Carter, 7lb 5oz, looks like both mum and dad I think. She is apparently a happy baby, and is learning to breastfeed and seems very content especially when she is being cuddled apparently.

I have already done a couple of posts on Twitter and Facebook. But she will not be a social media baby. The only place I will be posting updates on a regular basis is here, or on my QVC blog. Do stay subscribed and tell others to subscribe, if they wish to be kept up to date with the latest, soonest, after it happens. I know my social media followers will understand. Brad and Kari discussed this with me and I think it's the right decision. So occasional updates on social media but main updates on my blogs.

So stay tuned to find out more once I meet her - hopefully, assuming all goes ok in coming out of hospital next week :-) Meanwhile here are a few photos and thanks in advance for your kind comments!

Book of the week and AJ's on the list of Guardian new faces of fiction 2018!

So happy for my talented author pal. Well done lovely AJ Pearce - a well deserved mention on the annual list of upcoming stars!
So proud. (AJ is in black n red dress.) Her new book Dear Mrs Bird, which I reviewed on my book of the week blog on my website last week, is out in 2018 , so she has been named as one of the new faces of fiction for 2018 - by the Guardian, no less! Last year or the year before, it was Joanna Cannon, another writer colleague of mine. We all dream of being on this list, don’t we!

Go here to read the write up about lovely AJ in the Guardian piece, listing the best new faces of fiction for 2018.

Dear Mrs Bird is brilliant - review coming in full when novel is officially published in April!

And this week's Book of the Week is one that's helping me to get to grips with what the world was like just before my own novel is set. The Husband Hunters tells the tales of some of America's gentry in the late 1800s and how the heiresses came to England to find husbands to improve their social standing back home. And info about some interesting phrases! 'Keeping up with the Joneses' for instance! Am enjoying the tale even if it does occasionally read a bit like a list, and becomes a trifle soporific ! Very enlightening precis of the mood of the era though and enjoyed it very much. Gave me some good ideas on how to tweak my own book very slightly, set in the 1920s. More here.

Next week - some lovely pics (all being well schedule wise) of me and new grandbaby! I can still hardly believe it!

best wishes

Book of the Week this week is all about the brilliant second novel from Joanna Cannon – author of ‘The Trouble with Goats and Sheep.’ It’s called ‘All About Elsie’ and her delightful turn of phrase thrills readers, including me, as she describes lovingly an older lady’s experiences.

There are three things you should know about Elsie:

The first thing is that she’s my best friend.

The second is that she always knows what to say to make me feel better.

And the third thing… might take a little bit more explaining.

84-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, Florence wonders if a terrible secret from her past is about to come to light; and, if the charming new resident is who he claims to be, why does he look exactly like a man who died sixty years ago?...
