Amazing book mentor and award winning author Julie Cohen's superb novel Together is this week's book of the week.

Julie has inspired a whole generation of new writers who are now successfully published - most recently, AJ Pearce, (one of the lovely ladies I met on one of the first of Julie's courses, whg is now riding high in the book charts with the hardback of her debut novel Dear Mrs Bird.) My own novels have been very much written under the guidance of our very own 'WingCo Cohen.'

Having published more than a dozen romances and rom-coms, and having already been picked as a Richard and Judy book with 'Dear Thing, in 2014, Julie is once again leading by example - 'Together' is featured at the front of most bookshops right now, under the Richard and Judy Summer Read 2018 signs. It's a massive accolade.

A poignant, surprising love story told backwards over five decades, with a devastating secret at its heart.

When I first read Together what struck me with glee, is the consistency of the writing - it's what always strikes me about Julie's writing - she makes me care about the characters from the off. The plot canters along and is never dull, and this one has a twist that I did not guess - a delight, since I pride myself on being able to at least take a pop at the ending. I won't give anything away but suffice it to say, it's had great reviews, and topped several Amazon charts, plus has stayed in the top 30 for ages. This, is a good book.

Get it here on amazon, or in most bookshops, eg places like Luton WHSmiths. (As in top pic)

Being Chosen for Richard and Judy's book club...

But what's it like to be chosen to be a Richard and Judy Book of the Month? Julie tells me more on our recent trip to Chez Castillonin Bordeaux.

1. What does it mean to you to be in the Richard and Judy bookclub?

It’s fantastic—an unparalleled opportunity for my book to be seen by thousands of people. TOGETHER almost didn’t get published, so to have it chosen for a major promotion like this is absolutely the best.

2. Do you get to meet them and what do you have to do, book shop tours et cetera? Is most of it online nowadays?

The authors meet Richard and Judy in a top secret London location, to record a podcast and have an interview. These are available online on the WHSmith site. My podcast hasn’t been shared yet (and it has a bit of surprise in it, if it hasn’t been edited out) but there is a written interview and exclusive content, including a deleted chapter, on https://blog.whsmith.co.uk/rjsu18-richard-and-judy-introduce-together-by-julie-cohen/

3. At time of writing Together is number one in several Amazon kindle charts. The paperback is prominent in many leading bookshops. Yet you still find time to be a mum, run, write the next book, and run writing workshops! What does a typical day consist of for you?

I get up, get my kid to school, take the dog for a run, spend way too much time on the internet, and try to write 1000 words before my kid gets back from school! Some days I succeed, some days I fail.

4. Where can people see you next or attend a workshop?

I’m giving a literary salon on “Writing Relationships: Love and Other Bruises” for Words Away at the Tea House Theatre in Vauxhall on Monday 4 June. https://www.wordsaway.info/salons/2018/4/writingrelationships

5. And keep in touch? Fab website by the way.

I’m always on Twitter @julie_cohen and my website is www.julie-cohen.com

And finally - give us one of your top tips for writing a book …

Just sit down and get it written! (This means you Debbie…)

OK - better go do it then!

Inspirational as ever, that's Julie Cohen.

If you'd like to come along to one of Julie's workshops, she will be running her next novel writing week down at Retreats for You in Devon November 28th, 2018 - do come! Here's why - taken from our recent workshop at Chez Castillon in France - (the pool pic!)

Julie Cohen workshop extracts May 2018 - @julie_cohen -

‘Dont get it right, get it written’

‘The first draft is for you, full of back story- and YOU need to know that stuff. Then enact it, dramatise it, show don’t tell, and shape it for a reader...’

Most writers do an SFD - a shitty first draft - and that’s ok. Then revise.’

‘You use different parts of your brain to create and to edit. Dont try to edit whilst you’re creating. Do it afterwards.’

‘Everyone has their Waitrose moment (i’m going to give it all up and go work in waitrose), their ‘this sucks big donkey dicks’ moment - their sagging middle. Often about 40,000 words. When it gets scary DON’T GIVE UP, or the fear has won. Even if they end up unpublishable you will have learned something from it. Even if it’s only ever for yourself, the act of finishing is vital. You cant take step back and be objective until you’ve finished it. So get to the end. I’ll say that again - remembevwhat this is and why you’re doing it and GET TO THE END.’

‘Writing is an intrinsically worthwhile, self-nourishing thing to do. So write primarily for yourself. Then write for others.’

‘Retreats and workshops are so good because you meet other people like you, and they become people you can trust. Some great friendships are formed, especially for writers, during workshops.’

Genius advice. Superb mentor.

Fancy a workshop with Julie? Coming to Retreats for You 28 Nov 2018, mon to fri £600 full board inc wine at dinner.

Feedback about Julie’s mentoring -

‘I got my voice back. Thank you Julie.’

‘Julie pin pointed what was stopping me finishing my 5th novel and progressing the story. And it was so obvious once she told me. Full steam ahead now.!’

‘Writing a novel is so much different from my day job as a reporter, and Julie has finally helped me break my 3000 word duck. Thank f**k.’

‘It’s so lovely to get such encouraging advice from Julie, who told me that my voice matters. She said Nobody else can tell your story the way you do so do it. Julie is gold.’

That's my book of the week with Julie Cohen!

Amazon review - January 2018 -

This is a great book and so easy to identify with the author. I have been there and reading this book was like a breath of fresh air. I took on board what was written and lost 3 pounds in the first week. I am still losing but I don't dwell on food or think about it all day which is brilliant. I feel I can get on with my life and food is in its proper place. I eat when I'm hungry and because I am hungry, I enjoy the food all the more. If you are struggling and have tried every diet known to woman - like I have - buy this book. You will not regret it. It is turning my life around and I feel so much more positive than I did.

Had a lovely week of birthday events! Including going away with family at the weekend to Brighton, seeing a concert and having a fab couple of days in Bordeaux at my favourite writing retreat on the banks of the Dordogne in France. Loved getting together with my nearly four month old granddaughter Blake Katherine too - so many smiles and lovely cuddles!

~Yay! My colleague and lovely mate from QVC, Jackie Kabler is back on track with the third in her Cora Baxter mysteries.

I liked Jackie's first two books A LOT! They were on audiobook and I hope this one is soon, too. BUT if you have Amazon Alexa, she can now 'read' you the kindle version anyway!

Jackie's character, Cora is a newsreader - and I'm sure a lot of Jackie's inspiration comes from her time in the GMTV reporting role that so many people remember her from. The dialogue is realistic, the storylines compelling and each novel is well worth a read. If you want an enjoyable romp to keep you amused on a journey or to get to know a new hero, check out her three Baxter books.

After a stressful week, TV reporter Cora Baxter is ready for a quiet weekend. What she isn't counting on is witnessing the shocking death of a young woman on her way home. Cora discovers that seventeen-year-old Leanne has been protesting against a new housing development, angering the powerful establishment. Leanne s death is ruled a suicide but, when puzzling information comes to light, Cora decides to investigate further. She might not know what an unscrupulous businessman, a suspended police officer and hate-mail sending neighbours have to do with the case but she does know there is a news story there. With her eccentric camera crew on hand to help, can Cora work out what happened in the days before Leanne s death? And was it really suicide after all?

Book of the week - a superb book - here's my review on the latest blog on RiWiSi page on my website - go here - it's called Where the Light Gets In and it's one in a long line of dramas and romances set in the fictional town of Longhampton. I love that many of her books feature regular characters yet brings something new to the table every single time. If you need a new author to read, she has written tons so you will love her!

Book of the Week - Lucy Dillon is one of my favourite authors. I love the way she makes me really care about what happens to the characters in her books - usually with domestic plots and conflicts and true to life situations. I've read most of her books and love them.

This new one is fab and already highly reviewed.

You know those cracks in your heart, Lorna, where things didn't work out, but you picked yourself up and carried on? That's where the fear gets out. And where the light gets in.'

It was Betty, defiant to the end, who sent Lorna back to Longhampton. If Lorna's learned one thing from Betty, it's that courage is something you paint on like red lipstick, even when you're panicking inside. And right now, with the keys to the town's gallery in her hand, Lorna feels about as courageous as Betty's anxious little dachshund trembling beside her.

Lorna's come home to Longhampton to fulfil a long-held dream, but she knows deep down there are ghosts she needs to lay to rest first. This is where her tight-knit family shattered into silent pieces. It's where her unspoken fears about herself took root and where her own secret, complicated love began. It's not exactly a fresh start.

But as Lorna - and the little dog - tentatively open their cracked hearts to old friends and new ones, facing hard truths and fresh promises, something surprisingly beautiful begins to grow around the gallery, something so inspirational even Lorna couldn't have predicted the light it lets into her world....

Fabulous audio book too - so glad this one is out and it's already on my audible app on my iPhone for my long journeys to and from Devon!

Apologies all, once again the QVC blog platform, WordPress, has played up and the blogs are not posted. They may be, on Monday or Tuesday. I will keep you informed.

For my regulars, this is what the text would have said. Photos to follow. Apologies again, hopefully this will be sorted out at some stage soon :-) my blog will move to Thursdays too.

Meeting Ingrid’s Three (not so) little pigs! Yes really!

Top pic – me and Ingrid and pigs

First, if you missed last week’s blog due to the glitch in the wordpress platform which made posting it really late, do go back to last week’s blog here (add link pls). I’m hoping it’ll be fine for this week!

OMG How funny last week when I visited lovely Ingrid Tarrant at her sprawling Surrey pile, complete with menagerie including three rather large pigs!! She has lots of pets and tends to be a bit of a Dr Doolittle so it didn’t surprise me that she was in the middle of having an afternoon tea for some lovely auction winners who bid for the chance to meet the Three Little Pigs!

Pic of me and the three pigs

George is the smallest and actually lives indoors with Bentley the dog!! Lol. Paprika and Philip live outside in their pen and have a walk every day with Ingrid and the dog! Sometimes the cats come too. It was lovely to see her and to pat the piggies – their fur is wiry apparently like an elephants. I haven’t yet touched an elephant, but maybe one day. Especially if Ingrid adds it to her collection! Lol.

Sunshine Drenched Daytrip

Pic of us outside shops in sunshine

Pals Sara and Christina came down to Devon to stay this week, getting on famously with Jan, our other writer guest from Holland, who was rather bemused at these two dynamos, when they turned out my cupboards in the dining room, tidying it all up in advance of another vintage tea rooms pop up day. I didn’t mind it before, but they insisted on sorting out all the books written by previous guests and ones that needed to go to the village phone-box-library. Do you have one of those where you are? Also we enjoyed a lovely day in Barnstaple, and had a fabulous salad and gluten free this and almond milk that, at the coffee shop right next to a vintage fashion shop in one of the parades.

Pic of us in pannier market

We also visited the famous pannier market and they got some cheese and fudge – though not in the same bag! So nice to get out in the fresh air and bright sunshine. It finally arrived!

SNIPPETS

Pic) Baby Cuddles

Having not seen little Blake as much as I’d like, I got up early after a late finish on Saturday night, to go to daughter Lauren’s to see son Brad and his lovely little baby Blake again. I was delighted that she began cooing at me when I was talking quietly to her and going ‘bo!’ at the end. She’s three months now and getting very knowing!

Pic) Sheepwash Shop Task Force

Amidst one of my volunteering stints at the village community shop this week, an army of helpers descended to get everything ready for a new floor to be fitted! Talk about team work! It’s so nice being part of that little community, in the purest sense it is by the people for the people and the people all helped to clear the floor space ready for the new one to be laid! After pic next week.

Pic) Gossip Girl

Thought this would be a funny pic whilst out shopping in Barnstaple too – it’s a fifties style bust which so needs a speech bubble. What is she saying do you think? …

Pic) Coffee at the George

And their little biccies are shaped like a G for George! How sweet. Actually they were – too sweet for me – I usually leave mine, or pal Alix has it! Lol. I’m managing to drink a lot of water too nowadays – helps the dry-eye syndrome. But I did get that rotten red eye back again this week – don’t know why. Grrr! Hope it’s gone by Sunday when I’m on air again!

Book of the Week

this week it’s book 2 of the series set in Canada, nr Quebec, and the hero is an inspector who talks English with a Cambridge accent. Book two has a murder that drags you into the story straight away and as I write on my Book review blog this week, it’s even more exciting than ‘Still Life’, the first in the series. ‘Dead Cold’ features an obnoxious author who is nasty to her family and gets her comeuppance – still too much head hopping, but good narration and very enjoyable.

Facebook Vlog of the week  had a lovely windy walk in a funny hat this week, on the day that I actually chatted on Radio 4! Go here to watch the ‘vlog’ to find out more. Also to find out what ‘ghosting’, ‘breadcrumbing’ and ‘benching’ mean, as far as dating sites go!

Watch – Grease – 40th Anniversary showings Well one of our family’s favourite films is back on general release again – to celebrate 40 years since it hit our screens. The music was the soundtrack of our youth, and the script is as relevant and funny today as it ever was – enjoy it if you go!

Next Week’s Highlights –

Monday –**fab Bernini fountain you can put in your own base and decorate

Tuesday – Denis from Ojon  returns with a new haircare brand called Tweak’d, the three-piece collection is TSV.

Wednesday – Heys 3pc luggage set

Thursday – Julien Macdonald set of 2 crystal flower candleholders

Friday – And on Friday Doris has a new 5pc makeup collection from Doll10

Saturday - GTech’s power cordless vac is back

Sunday - Skechers fab Vinyasa pearl and rhinestone thong sandal

Next week – A weekend photography course in Dartmoor, plus my blog will be out on Thursday from now on instead of Friday – since my shift usually begin on a Thursday. I’m only on air this week Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (24th) though – having some annual leave – let’s hope the weather continues!

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes

Book of the Week – Still Life by Louise Penny

It was time to get my teeth into a series again, so when Still Life popped up somewhere (wish I could remember where!) I decided to give it a go. And I have several check points which make for a good choice as far as serials go. Good narrator? Yes, Adam Sims does well enough, traversing many variations of French accent, signifying speaking French, and various Canadian accents.  Peculiarly when Ganache talks English to the Canadians, he speaks in a ‘refined’ British accent – supposed to be Cambridge. And he gets it near enough that it’s fine. Some americans doing Brit accents drive me insane, (usually a version of 1950s movie character or Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins). Anyway it drew me in quite quickly so I continued with the check list.

Inspector Gamache is a Canadian copper and has several well drawn sidekicks, some of whom are clearly set up for interesting future conflict or drama. Check.

Strong female characters, check.

Realistic enough situation and premise, check.

Book One had a big murder mystery, so it’ll be interesting to see what the other 10 in the 11 book series are like. Hopefully it won’t be too Midsomer Murders…

The one thing that jarred several times was head-hopping. But as this is book one, published in 2005 but audiobook released in 2014, I’m hoping Louise Penny will evolve and grow out of that habit and it’s not enough to put me off so I’m going to give the next one a go too.

I do like Gamache and I really like the town – the place, the atmosphere Louise creates, and the interaction between the characters. I was drawn in once the rebellious deputy sub plot began, too – Nicole seems a bit petulant but if it goes somewhere over the next few books it’ll be good to see her develop.

The discovery of a dead body in the woods on Thanksgiving Weekend brings Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues from the Surete du Quebec to a small village in the Eastern Townships. Gamache cannot understand why anyone would want to deliberately kill well-loved artist Jane Neal, especially any of the residents of Three Pines - a place so free from crime it doesn't even have its own police force. But Gamache knows that evil is lurking somewhere behind the white picket fences and that, if he watches closely enough, Three Pines will start to give up its dark secrets....

4.6 out of 5 from me. – around about the mark for most of her books, which is pretty high.

Get Still Life on Amazon here – Kindle edition is only £2.99
