book of the week - Lethal White by Robert Galbraith Book of the week – Strike is back! Lethal White, by Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling in her crime writing alter ego) is out this week. Cormoran Strike’s fourth outing, with his newly married side-kick Robyn, are off on a twisting trail that leads them through the back streets of London into a secretive inner sanctum within parliament and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. As usual the narration by award winning actor Robert Glenister is outstanding. I love Strike's downplayed heroism and Robyn's credible gutsiness. This series never disappoints, and every second of…
Book of the Week - Jane Corry's The Dead Ex Book of the week – what a great book I’ve just bought. From the Freelance Media Group meeting I went to this week, we heard about how best to hunt for an agent - a good one. And which big publisher is currently accepting 'open' submissions. I will write about it on my Devon based Retreats for You website here (blog being posted soon.) It was thoroughly enjoyable and if you'd like to go to some of their meetings, featuring agents, publishers and experts, email me and I will put you in touch. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. I followed up by buying a…
Book of the Week - The Key to Rebecca by Ken Follett - just out! Book of the Week is the new one from Ken Follett. Regulars will know I love his Pillars of the Earth etc, historical series. So I thought I’d try The Key to Rebecca, a gripping thriller set during – yes you’ve guessed it – the second world war! It’s just out and I can’t wait to get stuck into it! I’ve got some long journeys coming up, backwards and forwards to Devon and now Wales – Lauren’s baby is due in just two weeks’ time! The stakes are high for the survival of the British campaign in North Africa, and…
book of the week - the Code girls by Daisy Styles Book of the Week - as I mention on my latest QVC blog, this new audiobook takes us back to WW2 again, a period I've been loving and drawn to, since reading AJ Pearce's 'Dear Mrs Bird'. The Code Girls is fab - It's 1941 and Britain is at war. For the aristocratic Walsingham family this means their grand home being taken over by the armed forces. But for newcomers Ava, Maudie and Bella, this is a chance for something more. Each is ready to do their part for the war effort and soon become firm friends. But Lord Edward…
book of the week - The Stranger by Kate Riordan What a brilliant cover! The Stranger by Kate Riordan is my latest must-read for the summer. The way she weaves her wartime tale is very evocative of the era, intertwining colourful characters and vivid settings and with a premise that's so cleverly written it keeps you wanting to read more to find out what leads to the dramatic opening. I'm loving the period stories atm, and this, set during evacuation in a coastal town, features land girls - posh ladies from London, out of place in a seaside setting amongst country folk. Once again I'm llistening to the audio book…
