Jackie's done it again, proclaim the already glowing five star reviews on Amazon. Yes my QVC pal and talented author Jackie Kabler's second in the Cora Baxter series takes us on another romp behind the scenes in the newsroom of her 'fictional' character...

Cora Baxter is back - and this time, she's facing the most important deadline of her career... When TV reporter Cora Baxter attends the scene of a murder in a London park, she's horrified to discover the victim is someone she knows and devastated when one of her best friends is charged with the crime. Suddenly the fun-filled life of Cora and her eccentric camera crew takes a darker turn. Cora is convinced that her friend is innocent, but with seemingly solid evidence, the police investigation team reluctantly led by Cora's boyfriend DCI Adam Bradberry believe the case is closed. With a trail of clues that leads all the way to New York, can Cora find out the truth before the trial begins or is it already too late?

I loved the audiobook of 'Dead Dog Day' so I'm looking forward very much to the next tale following Cora's haphazard detective work. It should be uploaded soon, Jackie told me this week!

From Amazon -

"Once again Jackie Kabler has written a highly entertaining read and I spent some delightful hours engrossed reading it. I have to say that I actually enjoyed it even more than 'The Dead Dog Day' and that's a brilliant book! Like in the previous book, the author shows an exceptional ability to mix and balance humour, drama, suspense and romance seamlessly and effortlessly while weaving a very well-written, clever, intriguing plot, brimful of highly realistic characters and believable dialogue. The numerous twists and turns the author plants along the way throws the story into a direction I certainly wasn't expecting." Top 1000 reviewer - great accolade!

(re-posted after IT glitch fri-mon)

READ ME A STORY… MY STORY?

I’ve noticed how high the profile of Audible is getting lately – have you? A big article in the London Metro paper, ads on the tube, features online… Am glad ‘cos it’s my lifeblood especially in my car.

Audible, if you didn’t know, is Amazon’s audiobook arm, where you can find most books in audio format. You can link to it via a book’s page on amazon too, which makes it easier. And you can use audible apps on any device to listen to your purchases (it’s fab!).

But how do you make your own titles into an audiobook? Amazon’s subsidiary has recently started allowing the UK to use ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange.) There, authors can link up with producers/narrators all looking for novels to make audiobooks out of. Most authors are currently doing a royalty split deal, to create their own, but you can pay outright for a producer to do it. Or create your own. Go here to read more about it if you’re an author/narrator. Go here to find out more about what a narrator is looking for in their next collaboration. And a fab look at the whole journey from Roz Morris is here – look at this first if you’ve no idea about audio books.

But if you’re a reader or should I say listener – OMG what a great way of getting more books read! I listen in the car – hallelujah, what a godsend it is – someone reading a story to me, all the way to work on my long journeys (about an hour each way, sometimes more!) I’ve been loving the entire Lee Child/Jack Reacher back catalogue, plus the Highlander time travel series by Diana Gabaldon (am on book 4 – and each one is over 30 hours long! Great value and really well read.) Plus many John Grishams and countless romances.

For most listens, my fave audio book – having listened to it three times - has to be Bridget Jones’ Diary 3 (Mad About The Boy) – read by the excellent Samantha Bond. I’d love her to read one of my stories – she could do great justice to Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter, recently released on Amazon in paperback and eBook. #Wishlist!

But some truly ruin a book. I’ve stopped reading a couple because the narrator took a dramatic unrealistic actor-y sharp intake of breath at the end of every sentence (grrrr!) – they’re not reading a story, they’re doing an actor playing at reading a story. I didn’t finish it – I won’t say which one but it was a light romance about xmas in a famous London St. I also went as far as getting a refund on Cloud Atlas – the first passages were un-listenable (ok so I’m making these words up, but they should be words! Lol) – being read by the actor as if he’d never seen those words before, and in a seventeenth century type context, that ain’t a good thing! Another had a sing song tune she sang in almost every sentence, mostly near the end, whereby I was more listening out for the blimmin tune than I was getting into the story. Most distracting. And of course there are the books which I just haven’t managed to wade through – some most definitely made more for the eye than the ear (Wolf Hall, the Luminaries etc – gotta give me points for trying though eh?! Hah!).

Anyway, fortunately most are GREAT! And if you find you are too busy with household chores, travel and so forth, to settle down to actually read a book, do get the audio book version – with audible apps on every smartphone device it’s never been easier – and you don’t need to be stuck with headphones either, not with all the great Bluetooth devices around. My current faves are a couple from QVC, including the Edifier and the trendy brand Bassboomz’ small but beefy 2 inch rechargeable speaker 504033 – no wires needed, connects by Bluetooth to your device with your audible app on! Oops! Slipped into sales mode there. But it’s great. And so is audible. Next step – to get some of my/your novels made into audiobook!

VOLUME IS KING – from one book in 12 years to 12 books in one year. It’s one of the biggest thrusts in self-publishing at the moment – listen to this podcast including some fascinating points about writing – a lot – from Joanna Penn with @johnnybTruant from theselfpublishingpodcast.com (a good site if you like ‘depravity,’ he says! Lol.) Seriously needs listening to! Click here for more info about Johnny B Truant and the selfpublishingpodcast.com

Kickstarter project – also from Johnny and co, watch out for their real time innovation - a ‘write a novel in 30 days’ project - helping people understand the whole procedure of writing and self publishing a novel. Going live June 1-30 2014. You can also ‘crowd-fund’ via kick-starter and get involved too. Fiction Unboxed – more here about fiction unboxed.

NON-FICTION

Till the Fat Lady Slims is my 2002 weight loss book all about eating like slim people do, following Food Freedom technique. As used and recommended on our Back to You QVC Facebook group!

OTHER WORK IN PROGRESS (see my new Work In Progress tab for updates!)

‘Hawaiian Retreat’ – Helen’s story - book three in the trilogy, see above.

‘TTFLS’ revised version – coming Autumn 2014

‘The How to Find a Husband Manual’ – hehe – more info in the summer. A spin off from the Hawaiian trilogy’s character Kate, Helen’s friend in New York.

‘Diary of a Rookie Shopping Channel Presenter’ – sequel - early 2015

So my Mothers’ Day giveaway went with a bang! And apart from the qvc blog comp giveaway, for those who didn’t realise I had a freebie eBook short story on offer, called When Dreams Return. Plus a 99p offer over the weekend for my Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss /autobiographical book. They both sold well and I had lots more reviews added to Amazon. They’re one way of measuring success if you self-publish – for instance, my Hawaiian Affair is just 4 short of 100 five star reviews, and I’m sure that helps some people decide what to choose. Does it you? It does me.

Numbers of sales/downloads is also a measure – 2390 in UK and 285 in US got When Dreams Return. This means I now have 14 pages (or 70 book) ‘also bought’s’ – where your book can appear reciprocally on others’ pages too – it all helps.

But the biggest measurement is of course the charts. On Amazon there are loooooads of charts, some very obscure. However, I’m glad to say I reached number one in the freebie chart for WDR under ‘books/fiction/horror’ – which meant more people would see it if they explored the charts looking for new titles. And even better, I got as high as number 23 in the overall UK kindle free book chart!

And very pleasing it was too!

Till the Fat Lady Slims also reached the heady heights in the paid charts of around 450, one of the highest positions any of my books has reached – so thank you everyone who took part. One of the best things about a kindle countdown deal for those registered to their exclusive service KDP select (a box you tick when you upload your ebook to amazon via KDP) is the new countdown analysis – statistics which showed me I sold over 1000% more books in that four days than previously. Anyway, it all helps to spread the word about me as an author, even if it doesn’t rack up the dollars massively. Interesting promotion tools though eh? And well worth considering if you self-publish.

In fact, if you do, next week I’m going to feature a guide to what tools you can use in your quest to promote your own first self-published book – some are obvious, but some you might not know about, so do come back next week!

Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter – THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

And now Mothers’ Day weekend promotions are over, the serious countdown begins to the next book – a fictional (honestly!) story of a twenty-something trainee journalist and her quest to become the next star of home shopping TV, or selly-telly. Behind the scenes shenanigans and an unusual romance feature in this cross between Bridget Jones, Alan Partridge, and Eddie Murphy in HolyMan. Here’s a little teaser of the cover – the whole thing will be revealed next week! And the countdown is on – till Easter weekend – just two weeks to go!

PLUS – NEWSFLASH – both Hawaiian Escape and Hawaiian Affair will both be on offer at just £1.52 Easter weekend – don’t miss it!
