First this week, for QVC viewers, did you know Ralph from Honora Pearls began his career as a script writer and film producer?! His nephew has directed thenew Jennifer Aniston movie out in Sept 3rd, and Ralph is associate producer/script editor! How exciting! Two degrees of separation and I wind up at Jennifer! Will definitely go see this film. Ralph's kindly offered to look at a script I co-wrote with a pro film writer so watch this space for his advice! Here is the trailer so you can go watch the film at the cinema - it's called 'Life of Crime' - a comedy about a kidnapping gone wrong.

Audio Book of the Week – Have to tell you about Lee Child’s latest Jack Reacher novel, ‘Personal’! I see he’s done another short story too, but at just over an hour, I’d rather use my credits on something longer.  click here to see more.

Extract from – Hawaiian Retreat – on Amazon 29th June
First chapter -

The coals weren’t just fiery, they were throbbing. Or perhaps Helen was. The fire-walk was getting closer - just a few rows of chanting people in front of her. It gave her palpitations. Smoking, glowing, smouldering – and very, very daunting. Oh and rather hot.

So much for this Try it For the First Time lark.

She could feel the vibration throughout her body - the rhythmic drum beating in time with the chanting crowd, urging them on, nearer and nearer, to the point of no return. Every now and then the embers flared, accompanied by a scream, and the tell-tale ‘tssssst!’ sound.

How the hell did I get myself into this? thought Helen, as she broke out in a sweat. She could feel the heat, smell the smouldering coals and the perspiring bodies either side of her. Pretty soon they would block her escape. It was now or never.

Focus, she said to herself, cool moss, cool moss, cool moss…

Only twenty four hours before, she’d been on a flight across the world to Hawaii, accompanied by her new man – the man now standing on a pedestal at the front, banging a drum, chanting.

If her sister Sadie could see her, she’d be proud. If her mother Grace could see her, she’d freak. She’d roll her eyes, and tut, as usual. Not that it mattered - Helen and her mum were currently ‘on a break.’ Giving each other space was part of their thing. And spurring each other on was part of her and Sadie’s thing. Thank god for sisters, thought Helen.  And thank god for… the guy on the stage… What was he to her, now, anyway, after everything that had happened in the last six months?

Cool moss, cool moss! Chanted the crowd at the front.

Shit, shit, she told herself frantically, realising that she was now just two rows away. She tried to hold back but an over-excited woman behind pushed forwards a little too hard and Helen whiplashed into the tall guy in front of her. She flung her hands into the middle of his back. He turned, eyes blazing, and Helen gasped. He was breathtakingly handsome… and she knew that face from somewhere.

‘Sorry!’ Helen shouted, above the pounding drums, jabbing a thumb over her shoulder. ‘Woman behind me!’

‘I can’t hear you,’ said the entrancing face, ‘but next time, give it a little rub whilst you’re there!’

‘I’m sorry?’ she cried.

He smiled and pointed over his shoulder at his back. ‘Joking,’ he added, ‘I meant give my shoulders a rub – they ache from karate chopping all those planks earlier on!’

If it hadn’t been a complete impossibility, Helen would have made herself scarce as fast as she could. ‘Cos that’s what she always did - well, nearly always – when a gorgeous stranger made a pass at her. She didn’t trust handsome men – not any more.

‘Run, run a mile, don’t get hurt again,’ the little voice inside her head would have said. But this beguiling man’s request was not out of place in this new community of happy-clappy people – with their frequent back-rubs, hugs and instant familiarity amongst strangers. So Helen just smiled and played along - she'd come too far to be found out now - so she reached up and rubbed his shoulders a little.

They were rock solid. And not in a good way.

‘Jesus, they’re hard as granite,’ she shouted, leaning into his ear from behind as she pushed into knots the size of golf balls. She felt him laugh.  Smelt his fresh male body scent. She rubbed harder and felt him relax into it – rolling his shoulders against her touch, almost in time to the all-engulfing pounding of the drums. And then she remembered where she knew him from. Oh god.

And then it was his turn at the front.

And she realised with a jolt that the outstretched arms of the Fire Crew and the maniacally grinning faces lining the fire-walk were all beckoning her, come on Helen - she was next. And every bone in her body was screaming ‘run’…

Her knees went weak and the air went thin. This was going to be interesting.

Chapter Two

Six months earlier…

Well you’ll do it if you want to keep your job.’

The boss was pacing. At least he wasn’t drumming his fingers, or that would have meant real trouble. And then he drummed his fingers. Uh oh…

‘But I’ve never been up in a dodgy old bi-plane, let alone wing-walked,’ protested Helen again, looking over at her friend Kate on the other side of the spacious executive office – but Kate just shrugged. ‘What if I die?’ Helen said.

Continued in Hawaiian Retreat – released June 29th Amazon

Above is the new cover fragment – a little sneaky peek at the third and final teaser of Hawaiian Retreat, book 3. The big reveal is just a week away! And the new novel just two weeks. Where does time go?!

Update

As my Home Page news item says, fab news about J K Rowling’s latest masterpiece – it’s out next week, and the audio book is on offer as a pre-order, with first two chapters free! Great marketing effort too. I got mine, very pleased and can’t wait. Go here to get your copy of Silkworm – writing as Robert Galbraith, it’s JK's book 2 featuring Cormoran Strike as damaged hero. I enjoyed the narration, I also enjoyed the in-depth characterisation and driving force which sucked me right in. As usual it made the journeys to and from work pass by very fast! I listen to a lot of audio books and am chuffed to have found a way of converting all my kindle e-books to audio for free – see my home page news update for info. (or sign up for newsletter updates to get them emailed to you for free each time!)

But of course the big news is that it’s now only two weeks away – so am frantically scribbling (well, metaphorically speaking I am!) away in every spare moment, to get my second book published. Due on Amazon by June 29th – ‘Hawaiian Retreat’. And the freebie updates on my QVC Author page – ‘like’ the page here  to see them each night from now on!

Personal Greeting for Dear Thing

Just finished listening to this top notch Richard and Judy pick, and it is totally absorbing, well crafted and brilliant! And now here’s a way of getting a personalised message to go with it – well done Julie Cohen (.com), great idea! Dear Thing is here on Amazon.

 Julie Cohen greeting

Countdown continues – Hawaiian Retreat – due out 29th June.

Cover reveal is next week!

Alessandro was sensitive enough to leave Helen to her thoughts on the slow walk back to the house afterwards. Helen felt a dull ache from being left out of an important family occasion – like she always did - with all the family there at the restaurant together and Helen thousands of miles away like the prodigal daughter.

Eventually Alessandro spoke, his tone gentle and warm. ‘Things will work out, will they not? Family blood is thick, and there was genuine affection in your sister’s eyes. Every family has their little problems.’ He said, placing his warm hand in the small of Helen’s back. She shivered a little as they walked, and just nodded, staring straight ahead as she negotiated the stone pathway back to the terrace where they were to dine…

Update

Had a very very interesting – and promising – meeting about my novels this week – I really can’t tell you more, but it relates to the future of my novels’ availability. Oooo – exciting! Lol. I am so glad about the turn of recent events – everything happens for a reason and the meeting I had this week was a direct product of a less happy series of events a few weeks before. Never give up if you’re thinking of writing. As Sammy Lee Rudd did – he’s just self-published his own memoir on Amazon and it got straight in the top ten in one of the Amazon minor sub-categories – well done Sammy!

Plus if you haven’t heard already, there will be a special Hallowe’en anthology this October – I’m just working on which fellow authors to request a short spooky story from to be included in it.  They’ll be spooky as opposed to really scary, don’t worry!

My novels

As promised last week, the countdown continues until the release of my next romance novel on Amazon. This week, a cover teaser – the first glimpse of Hawaiian Retreat – more like Hawaiian re-feet! Haha! Ok, rubbish joke – but another great cover by the talented Angela Oltmann. Plus another  little excerpt below, in the run up to 29th June - publication weekend of the third in the trilogy (again with a steamy or PG option!) - see bottom of page.

Cover reveal – teaser 1!

Full cover reveal  in the next few weeks too. Meanwhile – here’s a little glimpse – can you guess what it is?

- what the images are which will appear in the background of the cover of my new romance novel?

See if you can guess! Clue? It’s in keeping with the other two, and is featured within the storyline! Nb - anyone who has seen the cover, is not eligible – (and please don’t tell people either! Lol!)

Other news –

-          Self-publishing authors and literary agents - do they mix? Self-Publishing Advice brought us this interesting debate this week – from a ‘hybrid’ author – someone who retains some rights to self-publish but also wants/has a traditional publishing deal too. Click here to read.

-          Screenwriting weekend more from the organisers of the London Screenwriting Festival – I’m going to a two day script writing weekend shortly – click here for more info

-         Ten teen books your kid should read – following the furore about the government insisting on all-UK authors at the expense of some of the classics, here’s a list from the Mirror – do you agree? Which is your fave? Leave me a comment at bottom of this blog!

‘I miss Damian,’ said Helen, with a petulant pout. ‘He was so sweet after what happened in Tuscany at the conference. I’m beginning to wish I’d accepted his offer.’

‘Too easy – you like to make life difficult for yourself. Besides,’ Kate said, swinging round to face Helen on the bar stool, ‘You can’t resist a new challenge. I bet you secretly wanted to show the boss what a good job you could make of his new revamped column, right? Plus you wouldn’t want to make Mr Adams think you got no balls. Right?’

Helen paused, shrugged, and had to admit – her best pal was right. She nodded.

‘Hah!’ Kate said. ‘Well, Missus “I work for all I’ve got.” Maybe one day you’ll meet your match,’ Kate raised an eyebrow, ‘a man who makes you feel able to let go and just be a woman.’ Kate swigged back her shot. ‘If such a guy exists.’

‘Actually, he does,’ said Helen, staring at her drink. …”
