In the week that the Apprentice on telly nears its logical conclusion, this one popped up on recommendations. Am still loving listening to last week's Ken Follett book, so thought I'd buy this one to listen to next. Similar era - and lots of research once more, which brings those bygone times to life.

"This Original multicast drama blends history with fiction to tell the story of Jonah, a young apprentice from London who raises himself from poverty by wit and luck to become one of the most powerful merchants of the age.

A rags-to-riches tale, Jonah's journey spans the breadth of human experience, from the intricacies of Edward III's political intrigues to the cutthroat world of international trade, from the triumphs of war to the agonies of personal loss - love, friendship, joy, heartbreak and glory. Set largely in London, the Scarlet City, the centre of medieval England, the Scarlet City trilogy is a thrilling portrait of the age and the people who made it so rich, colourful and extraordinary.

London, 1330. Jonah Durham grows up in the household of his tyrannical cousin Rupert, and only his grandmother, the calculating Cecilia Hillock, recognizes his talent and intelligence. After her death he inherits a handsome fortune, bestowing him with both wealth and independence but also the wrath of his increasingly dangerous cousin. However, a fateful encounter with the young King Edward III is set to radically change Jonah's life and the future of English cloth production.

Told in three parts, hear Medieval London come to life in this historical epic, Audible Original's most ambitious production to date. Narrated by Miriam Margolyes, OBE (Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsRomeo + JulietMulan) and starring Douglas Booth (Riot ClubLoving VincentShelley) as Jonah, and Alison Steadman, OBE (Gavin and StaceyOrphan BlackShirley Valentine) as Cecilia Hillock."

Looks brilliant, right?

Dontcha just love it when you get a chance to involve your kids in something to do with work? They don't, mind you - not always anyway! But since these pics were public, they didn't mind. Taken at Lolly's wedding, they are on a customizable case for the new Amazon Fire 10 inch tablet TSV from Amazon, which I'll be launching Fri night on QVC (1st Dec midnight) with my lovely telly hubby Lee Hohbein. (go here where it will appear from Midnight!)

I get warm fuzzies every time I look at those pics, and am very proud of my kids. And their partners, of course! As I say in my new QVC blog, just out (here) , it's only six weeks or so till Kari, my son's wife, has her bubba and I become a nanny! And this is the only place I will be sharing pics of baby on a regular basis, updates etc. As I don't want her / him to become a social media 'thing' - and neither does son, or his wife. So stay where you are for the occasional update!

I don't, however, want to become one of those who posts about grandchildren over and over and nothing else... but if you know me, as many of you do by now, I'm sure you'll already know that that's not likely, considering what else I post about!

Moving out todayyy...ayyy...ayyy!

Remember that Carol Bayer Sager song? Loved it, way back when. Well I might have had a few house moves in the last few years, but my son and his wife take the biscuit! They have moved no less than SIX times in the last six years!! I'm now in what I hope will be my long term home, in Devon (unless something extraordinary happens!) as I too have had enough of moving. But we went to help out a bit last weekend and had a nice catch up. Managed to put together the latest Ikea purchases without any 'bits' left over afterwards too! lol.

So we got on to discussing tips for having a clear out and decluttering. It's the 'separation theory' - if you can put it all in a bag, and put it away eg in the loft for a year, and you still havent' used it, then throw it out after that! It makes it less agonising to choose what to put in the bag in the first place, and you can always go get it, whatever it is, if you find you really do need it after all! Do you agree? Or are you like my sis Linda who says 'if in doubt, chuck it out!'

Another genius performance on audiobook from one of my top five narrators ever - and Ben Aaronovitch's book is yet again brought to life in a uniquely entertaining way by the talented actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. It's the latest outing from his famous London copper, with special skills in the supernatural, and it's fabulous.

This time, PC Peter Grant and his quirky boss Nightingale are on the tube...

A stunning PC Peter Grant audiobook continues this best-selling series with commuting ghosts, a kidnapping, and a superb new London mystery!

PC Peter Grant is heading west.

There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line. And when commuters start reporting encounters with ghosts up and down the track - encounters which they forget entirely within minutes - Peter Grant gets a call to investigate. And the very first interview leads to a ghost-hunting expedition....

The first ever Peter Grant novella, this is a fantastic London-based mystery.

Now I love every syllable that Kobna utters, and his talent for accents, as well as his knack of making them all sound so different - not just the accent but the whole way of speaking - it's a skill not many narrators have. If you love audiobooks, do listen to the Rivers of London series by Aaronovitch - it's so well-crafted, and there are loads of them to get your teeth into - or your fangs...

Thanks to Claire Pearson, and her lovely dog Pal, had a fab time at the gorgeous surroundings of Leeds Castle in Kent on Wednesday 15th November.

My good pal Sheena drove me as my hand op was still healing (carpel tunnel) and we met the mayor and lady mayoress, Betsy Duncan Smith (patron) and many lovely medical detection dogs and their owners.

Go here to see the pics from the night, on a Facebook post

the choir sounded amazing

Founder Dr Claire Guest's explanation about these clever canines was fascinating as ever and the demo's included the latest - detecting specific bacterium on a swab. Go here to see it on the post I did on Facebook - you don't have to have a Facebook account to view it.

Claire Pearson's son gave a super account of what it was like to live with a mum who might collapse at any time, before MDD dog Pal arrived in their lives.

and claire's specialist describes his skepticism about dogs sniffing high or low blood sugar, before he encountered MDD

It was a super night and it was nice to catch up with so many of my MDD friends. The charity still needs much funding to continue their amazing work including into -

-prostate cancer detection

- malaria detection

- specific bacteria detection

- and parkinson's disease , early detection

and in the future even breast cancer, which ties in with Dr Claire's original experience with her dog Daisy. 'daisy's gift' is the book chronicling the events that led to a nodule of deep seated cancer being discovered in Claire's own breast and how Daisy's early detection saved Claire's life.

Much of their news is reported in the regular editions of their magazine,  'Sniff' magazine - read it all online here, including at some stage about Leeds Castle, no doubt.

Visit their site for xmas cards too - some lovely pics this year.

So proud to be involved with such an amazing charity.

Derek the Dog gets a match

At last, Derek the Dog has been matched with a diabetic owner in a new MDD partnership. Jason is a lovely chap and they are now going through their accreditation before they will be properly announced on the world. Since I donated enough funds to name a puppy, I have followed 'derek' - named after my late dad - and now two years later, he has finally attained his purpose. more soon...

This week I am over the moon with my favourite ex-military cop Jack Reacher's latest from Lee Child. The hardback is out at same time as audiobook so I devoured it. Love the way Lee Child writes, and loved the new more caring twist he's included in this one. 'the Midnight Line' did not let me down. He is one of my top authors so I will always leap at the chance to read the new one. Twenty two novels in, he's still compelling, compulsive and competent.

Jack Reacher takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It's tiny. It's a woman cadet's graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher's a West Pointer, too, and he knows what she went through to get it.

Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she's OK, he'll walk away. If she's not...he'll stop at nothing.

He's still shaken by the recent horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don't get in his way.

A more thoughtful novel, some think - take this review, from Amazon -

"Strangely enough, it is not action packed, but I think it his best book yet.
It made me think about returning combat veterans and the opioid addiction epidemic in the USA, wondering if those things were mirrored in the UK. Normally I know what to expect from Lee Child, but this was more - slightly darker. I recommend it heartily. Put your Reacher expectations to one side and appreciate the underlying story."

More on Amazon here.

It always makes me very proud to say things like this.

My writing mate Jules, a fellow student from the superb Julie Cohen workshops, is  hitting the heights on Amazon . Her latest book is at number four on the Kindle chart! The main Kindle chart! That is huge! Just a couple of places behind Lee Child’s new one from Jack Reacher, which I am devouring on audiobook at present. If you fancy a wonderful warming winter read with a festive theme, check out this one.

Tilly Hunter has fabulous friends, her dream job as a make-up artist with a prestigious opera company and Felix, her kind and caring husband to be. It looks set to be the most perfect Christmas yet!

But when a monumental blunder forces her to work closely with new IT director Marcus Walker, it's not only the roast chestnut stalls on the cobbles of her beloved Covent Garden that cause sparks to fly…

Super serious and brooding, Marcus hasn’t got a creative bone in his sharp-suited body. For technophobe Tilly, it's a match made in hell.

And yet, when Tilly discovers her fiancé isn’t at all what he seems, it's Marcus who's there for her with a hot chocolate and a surprisingly strong shoulder to cry on … He might just be the best Christmas present she’s ever had.

Everyone is raving about Covent Garden in the Snow

‘Had me laughing from the first page!’ Rachel’s Random Reads

‘Buy this book, put up a do not disturb sign and enjoy indulging in every page – you won't be disappointed!’ Gem’s Quiet Corner

‘A romantic and hilarious novel with a beautiful and snowy Christmas atmosphere’ Chicklit Club

‘Oh I absolutely loved Tilly! What a fun, festive book, and a beautiful cover’ LoveReading.com

One of the biggest blockbuster authors is back! Origin, the new Dan Brown is what I'm currently listening to on audiobook and I can already see it in my mind, appearing on the big screen. There is a fascinating premise to the plot, which is already gripping me and making me want to read on. As usual I can’t guess what it is – can you?

What I love most is the way he intertwines facts and history, places and people into his stories, meaning that for an archaeology geek like me (I got A level archaeology ) it ticks loads of boxes!  This one is no exception.

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever”. The evening’s host is his friend and former student, Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old tech magnate whose dazzling inventions and audacious predictions have made him a controversial figure around the world. This evening is to be no exception: he claims he will reveal an astonishing scientific breakthrough to challenge the fundamentals of human existence.

But Langdon and several hundred other guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is blown apart before Kirsch’s precious discovery can be revealed. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape, along with the museum’s director, Ambra Vidal. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret.

In order to evade a tormented enemy who is one step ahead of them at every turn, Langdon and Vidal must navigate labyrinthine passageways of hidden history and ancient religion. On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon and Vidal uncover the clues that will bring them face-to-face with a world-shaking truth that has remained buried – until now.

Hi! Hope you're having a great weekend so far. Here's what I promised for those of you who love vintage as much as I do, a little look at a 1940s cookery book my pal Alix found - what weird ingredients! AND news about Molly the detective dog who finds cats... Plus - below - a sneaky peek at the new Liz Earle Today's Special Value bumper pack for a fraction of the usual cost, and it's available right now - even though it only officially launches on Sunday on QVC.

Go here to get the Liz Earle 6 pc botanical essentials set right now and find out about the SIX full size products including a limited edition of the country's most highly awarded cleanser AND the new bodywash and bodycream.

Get it now and also do see on my QVC blog, live Friday pm here, for an early bird order link for several other products too - including TWO Amazon Fire tablets for around £90!

1940s Farmhouse Fare

Back in 1940, British 'countrywomen' were cooking up frugal meals and making the best of their sparse ingredients, and telling 'Farmers' Weekly' about their recipes. As well as 'make do and mend', British housewives were maximising their options with ingredients we would now call quirky or unappetising - but other meals such as 'jugged pigeons' and 'somerset rook pie with figgy pastry' seem inventive albeit unusual. In those days there were no fridges only cold pantries or larders, don't forget, and most people bought fresh for each day's meals.

The introduction to this book said they were recipes that had been tried and tested by genuine 'countrywomen' up and down the length of Britain and as such came highly recommended. Not sure if I'd have liked to eat some of them, whilst  others I'm almost tempted to try down at the Retreat in devon!

Not sure which supermarket would be selling rooks by the kilo nowadays, but an interesting glimpse at the past, isn't it! Fortunately the recipes I've been trying when it's my turn to cook down in Devon are quite straightforward ones. Mind you - the housewives or countrywomen of wartime Britain might have raised an eyebrow at my quinoa or courgetti dishes! What's your favourite one from a bygone era?

Molly the Detective Dog that Finds Cats.

Met up with Colin Butcher the owner of Molly, the detective dog who finds cats, last Friday lunchtime. She hits the news regularly and has been on the telly too. He has been offered a book deal and wanted my advice so we went to lunch. Molly is an amazing little canine who has been trained to find lost cats. I think it would make a great kids book don't you? Colin is rushed off his feet with requests for help to find pets at the moment so it was nice to catch up with him. He wasn't always a pet detective. He used to be a private investigator. Like Cormoran Strike from J. K. Rowling's Robert Galbraith novels. He once asked for my help to help one of his cases – an author who had disappeared. Colin thought her husband had done away with her and her little dog. Colin set up a scenario where I would go along with him posing as a fellow author interested in the lady's work and he would go and look out in the garden whilst I distracted the husband. But for one reason and another it never happened. A few months later the author was found dead in their sess pit along with her poor dog. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had gone along following up on Colin's gut instinct that the husband wasn't innocent. Now that would've been a story all on its own :-)

Saw these smiling little chaps and thought that considering there are so many babies around at the moment, I would post this pic. What a lovely sentiment, don't you think? About 17 years ago I learned that happiness was a choice. It was just after I got divorced.  I wonder if your experiences are similar to mine… Do  let me know! I went through a kind of a metamorphosis, including having a carefully concealed tattoo (three chinese symbols, and no, they didn't stand for 'quality, value and convenience!' ) as well as extra piercings. The man on the abseiling event at Center Parcs made me take it out of my belly button two years later, though, or I couldn't participate, and I never got back round to putting it back in. Anyway... there came a period when I learned different ways of dealing with the things that made me unhappy, including family comments. the phrases 'you'll get over it' and 'when I chose this I didn't have you in mind' became part of my vocab and I began focussing more and more on good things, and having appreciation. An 'attitude of gratitude' is one of the best things to cultivate, I was told. So I did, and it's really helped.

Nowadays, I'm not so much a glass half full person, I'm a glass never empty and if it is a magic genie comes and tops it back up again... 'What can we learn from this' and 'everything happens for a reason' are two great mottoes.

If you'd like to see what self-help books I recommend, you can read more about them on a blog I did, here. Enjoy. Any you've liked? Let me know. And do remember that happiness is a habit, a choice, rather than always feeling that the world made you do it or feel this way... Easier said than done, but just like touching your toes, the more you do it the easier it becomes.
