Book of the week this week is from my QVC pal and colleague Julia Roberts - her fourth! Well done Jules! I overheard fellow presenter Kathy Tayler raving about how much she enjoyed Jules's book whilst on her hols and have instructed Julia to get it into audiobook as soon as! Meanwhile, here's this week's recommendation - enjoy!

It's 1976; a summer of soaring temperatures and hose-pipe bans, and the year nineteen-year-old Alice Abbott's life changed irrevocably...
Alice's childhood dream of seeing her name up in lights seems close to fulfilment when she attends an audition for a new West End show but first she must impress theatre impresario, Richard, a man with an unhealthy penchant for innocent young dancers.
Befriended by Gina, an experienced dancer who is determined to protect her new friend from the sleaze behind the glamour, and attracting attention from the male lead in the show, Peter, a former pop star who she's had a crush on for years, Alice's star seems to be ascending until she accepts Richard's impromptu dinner invitation.
Alice’s apparent naivety places her in peril, but is she really as innocent as she appears or is she playing a dangerous game? And just how far will Richard go to protect his guilty secret?

Already with several five star reviews, it looks a great read!

It's finally here - Easter is around the corner and we have another super vintage tea rooms event for you at Retreats For You in Sheepwash Devon - are you near? Can you come? We are open 11-4pm, with delicious sausage rolls (did they have them in the 50s?!) and pasties and clotted cream devon teas plus bone china crockery with refreshing tea and coffees... come to EX215NE and you'll find us in The Court opposite the pub in the village square - can't miss it! Here's the event on Facebook so you can click that you're coming and see more.

My cousin Christina is coming - haven't seen her for years, so am looking forward to it. But isn't Facebook wonderful for keeping in touch with friends and family even though you haven't been face to face for yonks? It's a bit like christmas cards used to be - only now it's all year round - every so often there's a message and it makes you feel like you've kept in touch at least a little, right? Well Christina is an excellent cook and is bringing some of her own homemade cakes - all in aid of my charity for which I''m an ambassador, Medical Detection Dogs. More about them here.

Last time we raised quite a bit of money so I''m hoping the presence of Claire and Pal will do the same job - come see them and have a chat - you may see Pal alert Claire, his owner, to her high or low blood sugars and thereby saving her life and saving call outs to the NHS if she gets dangerously low or high. Such a good cause. and the little dog in the pic is Bones, available on QVC (last of the stock, assuming some left!) from Charlie Bears, also in aid of MDD.

Come to a sing song in Devon on September 16th Yes, we're doing it again! If you are near Torrington or fancy making a weekend of it, we will have a charity evening sing song full of fabulous 40s and 50s type songs, in the super 'the Plough' arts centre theatre and cafe on Saturday 16th September - do put it in your diary. More soon. Tickets will go on sale via their new brochure too, and there will be local kids singing, a mums choir singing accapella and a super band that have appeared at the royal albert hall. hope you can come!

past two weeks newsletters - were delayed - sorry you didn't get one! I had a few issues with logging on, but if you'd like to read them, go here to see new horizons no more shadows and see the back garden of Retreats for you without the trees; and go here to read about the funny chicken video in belstone and see the lovely feature on me in Surrey Life magazine! click here to read it.

Book of the Week is something different this week - Benefit's lovely Lisa Potter Dixon's 'Makeup Manual' - just out - go here to find out more.

Getting the Message... it's a funny thing, but you know how sometimes topics keep cropping up in your life and it's like someone's trying to give you a message? Well the same issue has kept appearing in my life for a while now. and then I saw the awful situation Mel B found herself in with her abusive controlling husband, only now the truth is out. But so many people suffer in silence don't they. Well here's my take on being with an emotional abuser and you won't believe some of the stories - and if you know anyone you think might be in that situation, or you are someone - go here to read it on my website.

QVC blog  will go live here on Friday afternoon, with a couple of early bird order links, sneaky peeks of the TSvs for the week ahead, and a really funny blooper involving my bust! lol! Click when it's live.

Lisa Potter Dixom is a fabulous guest on QVC for Benefit - the country's number one high street make up brand. We do lots of wonderful kits, go here to see the whole range. Anyway in this manual, Lisa gives the benefit of her knowledge from years in the beauty business and the skills she's learned along the way.

"A comprehensive make-up manual that details all aspects of make-up application, solutions to common problems, as well as tips and tricks for perfecting your look every time.

Starting with Skin Secrets, make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon teaches you everything you need to know about skincare and perfecting your base before moving into sections that target specific areas of the face. Chapters and looks are organised by feature, each starting with an introduction to the area and followed by looks that show it off best. In Beautiful Brows, Lisa explains why it is so important to maintain and enhance your brows, before styling a Natural, Full, Ombre and Feathered look. In Go with the Glow, she explains why we add colour and takes a look at Contouring, Strobing, Blushing and Bronzing. In The Eyes Have It, things really get interesting, with looks for Smokey, Colourful, Nude, Smudged, Bejewelled and Glittery Eyes that will makes your eyes pop. Chicken crossing the road ... in Belstone

Funny moment this week in Belstone - with two chickens crossing the road - literally - in Belstone, when I went to visit my mate Alix who lives half an hour away from Retreats for You in Sheepwash. THat's where I live now, in case you are a newbie! I love all these country experiences! Right opposite her were some new lambs too - so cute! It was pouring down with rain otherwise Alix would have got Kerry the farmer out to help me get nearer a couple of them - but these pics were nice enough!

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The Girl in the Painting is the second book in the Rossetti Mysteries series, published by Choc Lit. The first book in the series, Some Veil Did Fall, was based on Pre-Raphaelite poetry, The Girl in the Painting is based on Pre-Raphaelite painting, and the third book in the series, The Girl in the Photograph, is based - surprise, surprise - on Pre-Raphaelite photography, an art-form made famous by the likes of Julia Margaret Cameron. The Girl in the Painting was out in paperback on 7th March, the same day as The Girl in the Photograph is published in ebook form – very exciting!

All three books are interlinked, but they can be read as stand-alone novels. And all three books are also timeslips, with a paranormal mystery to solve, romance and hauntings. The settings range from Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, to London, the Tate Gallery, Cornwall and back to North Yorkshire – this time to Staithes, another coastal town with a rich artistic heritage and links to the Newlyn Group of Artists, through the very famous artist, Dame Laura Knight.

 Kirsty says -

I hope you’ll enjoy all the books in the series, and maybe even come to love the characters as much as I do! Happy reading.

Quotes:

Wow! This had everything - love stories, ghosts, obsessions ...  It's a time slip/ghost story involving the present day and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Having long been a fan of all things PRB and having been to see their paintings more times than I care to think about, I was really looking forward to this book.
Ann Cooper, Annie’s Book Corner on The Girl in the Painting

****

With brilliantly connected contemporary and historical scenes, eerie ghostly sightings and hauntings, stories desperate to be told, and romance that keeps people together as well as tears them apart, this is a novel that you will devour from start to finish, and then feel empty as you leave the artistic world behind.
Sorcha O’Dowd, Waterstones Bookseller and Reviewer at Old Victorian Quill on The Girl in the Painting

****

Kirsty Ferry has written a perfect combination of history and present day. Becky and Jon are great main characters. They both have a good heart and that makes them very likeable. I enjoyed reading this story very much and think Kirsty Ferry has told an amazing tale about history and future that ends in a great and very fitting finale.
Suze Lavender, Suze Likes, Loves, Finds & Dreams on Some Veil Did Fall

                                                                                ****

…A gentle romance mixed with goose bumps are written with a stealthy hand and solid plot. ….“Some Veil Did Fall” delivers chills to a reader as if a ghost were reading over their shoulder!
Natasza at InD’tale Magazine on Some Veil Did Fall.

                                                                                ****

I am a big fan of this particular publisher, almost anything they choose is well worth a read but when it has a slightly wacky, unreal feel then it’s a bit special.   …This is pure charm, a delightful romp.
LoveReading on Some Veil Did Fall

BIO

Kirsty is from the North East of England and won the English Heritage/Belsay Hall National Creative Writing competition in 2009 with the ghostly tale Enchantment. She has also written North East based novels, short stories and articles for magazines such as Weekly News, Peoples Friend, Ghost Voices and It’s Fate.

Her timeslip novel, Some Veil Did Fall, a paranormal romance set in Whitby, was published by Choc Lit in Autumn 2014. This was followed by another Choc Lit timeslip, The Girl in the Painting in February 2016 and The Girl in the Photograph in March 2017. The experience of signing Some Veil Did Fall in a quirky bookshop in the midst of Goth Weekend in Whitby, dressed as a recently undead person was one of the highlights of her writing career so far!

Kirsty’s day-job involves sharing a Georgian building with an eclectic collection of ghosts – which can sometimes prove rather interesting.

The Girl in the Painting

What if you thought you knew a secret that could change history?

Whilst standing engrossed in her favourite Pre-Raphaelite painting - Millais's Ophelia - Cori catches the eye of Tate gallery worker, Simon, who is immediately struck by her resemblance to the red-haired beauty in the famous artwork.

The attraction is mutual, but Cori has other things on her mind. She has recently acquired the diary of Daisy, a Victorian woman with a shocking secret. As Cori reads, it soon becomes apparent that Daisy will stop at nothing to be heard, even outside of the pages of her diary ...

Will Simon stick around when life becomes increasingly spooky for Cori, as she moves ever closer to uncovering the truth about Daisy's connection to the girl in her favourite painting?

The Girl in the Photograph

What if the past was trying to teach you a lesson?

Staying alone in the shadow of an abandoned manor house in Yorkshire would be madness to some, but art enthusiast Lissy de Luca can’t wait. Lissy has her reasons for seeking isolation, and she wants to study the Staithes Group – an artists’ commune active at the turn of the twentieth century.

Lissy is fascinated by the imposing Sea Scarr Hall – but the deeper she delves, the stranger things get. A lonely figure patrols the cove at night, whilst a hidden painting leads to a chilling realisation. And then there’s the photograph of the girl; so beautiful she could be a mermaid … and so familiar.

As Lissy further immerses herself, she comes to an eerie conclusion: The occupants of Sea Scarr Hall are long gone, but they have a message for her – and they’re going to make sure she gets it.

All in all a fabulous series of books. I'm just reading the first one, via audiobook and liking it so far! I love the fact that there are two more after this one - once you've i nvested in a book and its characters and premise, it's nice to take a short cut to the next set up, being familiar with them already.

Have a lovely week

The big question which I will have to decide in the next few weeks is how to name the bedrooms in our lovely guest house and writing retreat in Devon - see below. What do you think?

Also - stop press - the latest Decleor early bird order link for the wonderful 4pc set in Sunday's (26th) Today's Special Value on QVC is already out - go here to see it and buy it - it's going to be busy - specially the gradual glow tanning option. More Early bird order links are usually added to my tab on my website here. when i can get in to edit it!

Naming the rooms

This is a hot topic for me at the moment and one I’d like to ask you about. Firstly I’m thinking of naming the bedrooms in our guest house/writing retreat, Retreats for You, after the former residents. This is because I have copies of the census returns showing who was living here. Eg in 1881 showing the landlord of this building, which was the White Hart Inn, was one Moses Dufty. If I had a ‘Dufty’ room, would you book it?!

Other names include the Jones family – who were here from the 1930s – Brian Jones is the boy in the pic above and he still lives up the road, now aged about 80 something. Also the Martin family – from the early 1800s and Slee – another local family name still in evidence around Sheepwash – who was a landlord in the late 1800s. Plus the Cooper clan, the former owners before me. What do you think? Or if not this idea, then what? Others said names of breeds of sheep, of trees, of MDD dogs and more. Doggy Paws

I've also managed to use a couple of pits in the kitchen floor to come up with a neat idea to immortalise Daisy and Gracie dog at Retreats for You - look at this!

We put their paw prints in the grouting! Funny and charming all at once. Better than a rotten great grey patch too ...

Book of the Week  is Kirsty Ferry's The Girl in the Painting, follow up to Some Veil did Fall, which I'm listening to on audio book at the moment. So it's a double whammy! Go here to read more about these historical novels.
