When you've had over thirty years in TV you inevitably come up against some mishaps live on air. Apart from the infamous NoNo cream blooper that made it on to it'll be Alright on the Night, this classic just popped up on youtube - one of the most unbelievable bloopers ever! #couldntMakeItUp! lol - it genuinely happened this way too! Watch...

Anyway, hope you've had a good week - how amazing has this weather been? From sultry sweltering days to storm-ridden nights. This was the rain outside my back door on Thursday night - click here. The choccies were not very happy with the thunder, so I gave them lots of hugs!

Book of the Week Please Don’t Stop the Music by Jane Lovering – she writes a witty tale, so I’ve started listening to another by her on audiobook – more here on my Read it Write it Sell it blog on my website - plus info about the York writing festival. AND how to join me on the next Julie Cohen writing retreat for writers in Bristol in March!

Sugar escapes thru the 1960s net as industry pays experts to demonise saturated fat instead. Regulars will know how I've been writing on health topics for several years now, on my Back to You health blogs on my website. Well, one of the topics that's always befuddle dme is why it took so long for the Health Departments to realise about sugar. Well, this week it all came out.

It's official - they've released previously unseen papers showing that there was a deliberate ploy to divert attention away from sugar. It was back in the 1960s, in some of the earliest studies - when they could have stated it was sugar as well as Saturated fat which was at the heart of the health problems. They didn't, and so set the wheels in motion away from the worst culprit, blaming just fat, wrongly, and resulting in the exact opposite of the target to cut soaring health problems and cut cases of metabolic syndrome. The cases have increased since 1982 when the US FDA announced fat was to blame and 'low fat' foods began replacing the missing taste with more and more sugar . So if you still know someone who keeps saying 'this is good it's low fat', get them to do some research, including watching 'sugar the bitter truth' or my guide 'aids to cutting back sugar' on my website. Here's the full New York Times report read it here.

On a lighter note, I'm really excited because of a new project I'm working on - and of course getting my book French or Dutch finished to go off to a few specific people who are waiting for it. More soon - or soonish!

And here's the latest QVC blog - if you like finding out about offers before other people - go here to see tons of  sneaky peeks and a funny blooper from my hilarious mate Charlie Brook this week on air. See it all here.

Am off to a wedding at the weekend - let's hope the rain holds off! Then to Devon till Tuesday - squeee!

Have a fab week.

Do they? It's certainly been my own experience - quite apart from the bad effect diet drinks have on your gut bacteria - a pet subject of mine (see archive).

Read this -

When consuming very sweet foods, the body expects a high calorie intake too. As diet drinks often contain no calories (as is usually part of their appeal) the space between what the body expects and what it receives in reality, leaves you in a kind of starvation mode.

In order to rectify the space between calorie and sugar intake, your brain thinks that you're missing calories and so craves more food.

Makes perfect sense.

Read the whole piece here.

What does this mean for the average dieter? That perhaps the best way to get round it is to simply reduce your sweet palate. Easier said than done, especially if you have a bit of an addiction going on. but it's not impossible. Start with a big mug of hottish water with a little splash of fresh lemon juice each day (a little splash). Plus do explore all the reading and watching material on my aids to cutting back on sugar blog here. It really makes sense...

Plus some fascinating info can be found on a very easy-to-watch video on youtube called 'gut reaction parts 1 & 2' - see what you think - it's a whole new frontier in medicine and we'll only hear more and more about it in the months and years to come.

I LOVED this book. A little slow to drag me in at the start - most are. But once I realised how witty some of Jane's writing is, it had me yearning for more. Some of the clever inventive turns of phrase made me laugh out loud when listening to this, driving along in the car. Melody Grove the narrator has a good comic delivery too - refreshing when too many narrators just don't get the comedic element which is enormously frustrating sometimes. But not with this one.

Jane is a fellow Choc Lit author and has several books to her name so I will be buying more for sure and it's no surprise that she is an award winner.

I love that her hero is not a typical alpha - he is a geek with a PhD in astrophysics and a tortured past that is a match for heroine Molly's own disastrous love life. The secondary characters are compelling too, and the twists and turns in the romance were believable. Really entertainingly written and highly recommended. Others think so too hence lots of good reviews.

Next on my list is the one with which she won the Romantic Novel of the Year 2012 award. Fabulous!

A Top 500 reviewer on Amazon says -

This is a light romance set in Yorkshire with much of the wit that I am coming to appreciate in this author's books.

Molly is riding her horse Stan across the moors when she comes across a naked man (as you do). She takes him home to sort him out and from there develops one of those love stories where every step forward seems to be marched with a couple towards the rear. I usually get very frustrated with stuttering love stories because the protagonists could usually sort everything out if they only talked to one another but in this novel the author relates all their issues to their characters and what has happened to them in their past - this makes the story much more likely.

Molly is a deeply hurt woman who has come to Yorkshire to escape and has only her friend Caro for company. Phinn has inherited a semi-derelict cottage and has taken up residence in order to get away from his world too - he is a physicist and more than slightly nerdy which is nice and unusual. Phinn's friend Link has his own issues too. These wounded people recover in the Yorkshire landscape and begin to forge new relationships. This process is great fun as we are engaged with the characters and also because the author has some great lines - this book is written with a lot of wit and humour which raises it above the average.

This is a quick and engaging read. It uses the Yorkshire landscape to its best advantage and is full of humour and amusing moments. The characters are flawed but human and the author wraps it all up in a very satisfying manner

'this week i've chosen to feature another of Jane lovering's super books because I love her writing so much. The first one I read was 'How I wonder what you are' and it drew me in with some brilliantly witty one liners, just the type of unpredictable and creative writing i like to read - or rather - listen to!

Having just finished listening to the audiobook of Jackie Kabler's 'Dead Dog Day' (my fellow QVC presenter and author signed by Accent Press) - which is very well narrated by the way - I've downloaded Please Don't Stop the Music for my next read. i'm going to my nephew's wedding this weekend followed by another trip down to Devon for some er... errands, so it'll keep me company and I'm expecting more entertaining creativity from the talented Jane!

Winner of the 2012 Romantic Novel of the Year Award. --Romantic Novelists' Association

~From the start I found myself connecting with the characters. They were believable and I could imagine them as real people. The two main characters, Ben and Jemina both have underlying secrets and as the book progresses, are hinted at. This made me want to keep reading to find out all the whys and hows .... ... I actually found it rather more upmarket than other chick lit. Yes, it was easy to read but with a great plot, really believable characters and lots of laugh-out-loud moments - I loved it! Jane Lovering is definitely an author on my reading list now - I can't wait for her next book!~

Champneys - Ducking Quack off!

That's what one of the ladies on the terrace said when she was terrorised by demanding ducks this week at Champneys! Lol! I've posted lots of pics on my Facebook page so do go there to see more, and a big blog about it will be on my QVC main blog out tomorrow here. But it was super fun. Here are a couple of other exclusive videos to watch - I love this place! Have you ever been?

I had some vouchers to use up - someone's got to do it! They've revamped the spa area and the pool was fabulous - the 'not-coldest' I've ever been in I think. BUT we were up on the third floor and the last night was boiling! Still, can't complain - we were really lucky with the weather. Mind you I think the ducks would have preferred the rain!

Could be something, could be nothing but it looks like she's got something wrong with her, that needs diuretics and steroids. At her age I'm not surprised, neither is the vet. She's perkier this week for sure, but I won't put her through any biopsies and exploratory this that and the other, just to find out what it is as they probably wouldn't operate or anything harsh at this stage anyway. So whilst we can make her as comfortable as poss that'll help. She's already outlasted her mum Holly who died two years ago so fingers crossed this helps. it'll make her arthritis less painful too apparently, this new medication. So we'll see. Another belter of a suspense novel this week - gritty, real, undeniably compulsive and full of edge of the seat moments. Plus a couple of twists I did not see coming. Well done Clare! I do pride myself on being pretty good at guessing twists, as most of us do I'm sure! And I was pleasantly surprised to read this one and suddenly find out of nowhere I've got unpredictability. Always good in a new author. The first part did take a little while to warm up but because the second half was above par, I'd still give it top marks.

Loved the cop duo, loved the dynamic between the heroine and her would-be beau. Loved the gradual feeding in of info and strong narrative drive. Very good. No wonder this lady takes workshops on writing.

One thing that bugged me though, on the audiobook version, which I always listen to, is the lack of cohesion in the accent of the antagonist. One narrator did one, the other narrator did another. Shame - would have been so easy to fix.

THERE ARE 2560 X 5* REVIEWS!!! The vaaaaast majority. Clare is big time in crime - as an ex-copper, it's no wonder it's all so authentic.

fab atmospheric book - review to follow

An epic, escapist novel that will transport you away to an extraordinary time in history. Perfect for fans of Kate Morton and Victoria Hislop.

Rome, 1950s. One fateful night, Hal Jacobs meets Stella, a beautiful society darling from New York. To Hal, flailing in the postwar darkness, she's a point of light. They're from different worlds but both trying and failing to carve out new lives.

Stella vanishes all too quickly, until a curious invitation from an Italian Contessa reels her back into Hal's world. They join the Contessa's collection of luminaries on a yacht headed for the Cannes Film Festival. The scene onboard is a fiction - scars from the war can be hidden yet not healed. Everyone is hiding a dark history, but Stella's secrets run the deepest.

Compelled by her fragile beauty, Hal is determined to bring back the girl she once was, the girl who's been confined to history.

The Invitation is an epic love story that will transport you from the glamour of the Italian Riviera to the darkness of war-torn Spain and to a golden - if rather haunted - time.

Good reviews so far -

this was a Gatsby-esque tale of how glitz and glamour can hide so many secrets and so much pain.

Stella’s story was the most developed given her flashbacks to her life in Spain. Hers was an intriguing story and I would have loved to know more about her time in Spain. I think there was even more to this story that the author let on and that in itself got me interested in finding Stella particularly interesting.

The tension and attraction between Hal and Stella was nicely done and I liked the way that as the boat sailed into a new destination, there was even more baggage to offload. The locations are evoked with sun and panache and you would be recommended to read it with your shades on and a lime slice and margarita nearby.

I liked the story and I liked it very much after the first half. it developed more dramatically once the scene was set, and led to me wanting to get back into the car to 'read' more of the audiobook. The narrator was VERY good. She definitely captured different accents and intonations so you knew which character was speakingn without needing to have it spelled out. Loved the interweaving of the flashback scenes which eventually explained the characters' actions.Cleverly put together - bit too 'literary' for me at the start but glad it got a bit more dramatic later on, and well worth it for the atmospheric descriptions of this glamorous vintage era.  Well done Lucy! Would look for more by her, and would definitely look for more read by narrator Emma Gregory.

Book of the Week is one by a fellow author who has done terribly well this week with the launch of her new book, The Unquiet Souls. Liz Mistry went straight into the UK Kindle top

Plus it's already really highly reviewed. Here are a couple of them from customers -

Unquiet Souls had me completely gripped from start to finish. Liz Mistry keeps the pace, tension and interest going by using short, snappy chapters and switching between narrative strands, so that the reader is aware of what is happening in 'real time' . The premise behind the novel is grim and uncompromising, but the essential decency of the main character, Gus McGuire, and his police team, acts as a counter to the bleak vision of exploitation and inhumanity. I really liked Gus, with his dreadlocks and impatience to be back at work after a psychologically and physically damaging incident, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Liz Mistry develops his character in future books - and whether there is romance in store for him (my money's on one of his team ...)

I connected with this book so easily. Living in Yorkshire myself and reading of mentions of my favourite radio station and presenters as well as one of my favourite restaurants in Leeds, well it was almost like what was going on was happening right round me. Was so easy to visualise a lot of the areas as well as the characters.

I love Gus, he hasn't had an easy time of it but thanks to his dad and his work colleague, he is finally allowed back to work. His work is something that Gus is good at and it gives him a purpose in life. I also love his parents. His dad is just a brilliant character and brings a slight humour to the otherwise dark and sometimes uncomfortable read.

The case that Gus comes back to is a child trafficking racket. I knew as I was reading it that at times this was going to be out of comfort zone and I wasn't wrong. The author does it in a way though that they give enough away without giving to much.

Unquiet Souls I have to say is a cracker of a book for the first in a series. The author had the perfect balance for me of the characters and their background without it affecting the actual case and story line. It's a dark and gritty read that had me feeling like I was holding my breath towards the end as I was so caught up in everything that was going on. Can not wait for the next one.

Looks really good! Well done Liz. Can't wait to read it - hope it comes on audiobook soon.

Other news –

-          Joanna Cannon's Bursary My author pal Jo has done something lovely. Here's her news -

For those of you who can remember, this wonderful (and rather miraculous) publishing journey, really began at the Festival of Writing in 2014. I can remember how incredibly supportive you all were when I won the Friday Night Live competition (and I can remember running around, trying to find some WiFi to thank you all!)
I wanted someone else to have that experience. Someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to attend the festival. Although it's incredible value for money, I know there have been (many) times in my life I wouldn't have been able to stretch the pennies that far. And so the Goat Bursary was born.
Application is open to any writer-in-waiting, living in the UK, who would like to come to the festival, but isn't in a financial position to be able to do so. All you have to do is send a sample of your writing and a letter explaining why you'd like to attend. Everything is paid for (including travel and spending money), so you'll get all the amazing workshops, talks and one-to-ones free of charge (a package which is worth over £800 in total) Plus, my amazing agent, Sue Armstrong at Conville & Walsh, will give you feedback on the first 50 pages of your WIP (which is priceless!).
I wanted someone else to have the opportunity I was lucky enough to have, so please do share with your friends, or pass on to anyone you might think will benefit.
All the entry details and T&C are here: http://www.writersworkshop.co.uk/FestivalofWriting-TheGoatBursaryAward.html
If you'd like to read a little about why I wanted to start a Goat Bursary (love that name, thank you Ann Bissell!), I've written a blog post on it here:https://joannacannon.com/2016/08/01/the-goat-bursary/

Well done Jo!
