A fabulous author who has achieved something quite extraordinary in over 90% of five star reviews on this enchanting tale.

I picked this since Claire is one of our regulars down at Retreats for You in Devon. As one of the professional writers, we look forward to her latest books and it gives us great pleasure to report on this one.

"They say three's a crowd but when Boyd moves back into the family home with his now amicably estranged wife, Vita, accompanied by his impossibly beautiful twenty-seven-year-old girlfriend, Honey, it seems the perfect solution: Boyd can get his finances back on track while he deals with his difficult, ailing mother; Honey can keep herself safe from her secret, troubled past; and Vita can carry on painting portraits of the pets she dislikes and telling herself she no longer minds her marriage is over.

But the house in Albert Terrace is small and full of memories, and living together is unsettling.

For Vita, Boyd and Honey love proves to be a surprising, dangerous thing and, one year on, their lives are changed forever...

I look at what fellow professionals say and it includes the following:

"The Last Day is an exquisitely written story of love and loss. With a poet's hand, calm clarity and true wisdom, Claire Dyer paints a picture of real people dealing with very real emotions. Turn your phone off, put a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, and curl up with this gem of a book." - Amanda Jennings, author of In Her Wake

"A tender, beautifully written book about marriage, love, grief and fear: how all can be lost in a moment, and how hope survives." - Julie Cohen, author of Together

And if Julie Cohen says it's fab, then isn't it worth a go if you're looking for a new novel to read this Spring?

Amazon review - January 2018 -

This is a great book and so easy to identify with the author. I have been there and reading this book was like a breath of fresh air. I took on board what was written and lost 3 pounds in the first week. I am still losing but I don't dwell on food or think about it all day which is brilliant. I feel I can get on with my life and food is in its proper place. I eat when I'm hungry and because I am hungry, I enjoy the food all the more. If you are struggling and have tried every diet known to woman - like I have - buy this book. You will not regret it. It is turning my life around and I feel so much more positive than I did.

It’s been a while due to not driving so much and being rushed off my feet with Xmas and so on, but here’s the latest novel to grace my audible app/alexa…

John Grisham is one of my ‘must-read’ authors, even though some of his more recent ones have been a bit hit and miss, sounding more like an abridged version of itself, the reviews reflecting that, very often. BUT The Reckoning seems to be hitting the mark and has made me inquisitive enough to find myself thinking about the characters in between sessions…one of the best signs that it’s a good book.

See also below for the Stylist Magazine’s ‘Books to Watch out for in 2019’ list – very glad to see my mentor Julie Cohen’s next novel firmly on that list! Plus info about our writing retreat dates for 2019.

The Reckoning.

John Grisham returns to Clanton, Mississippi, to tell the story of an unthinkable murder, the bizarre trial that followed it and its profound and lasting effect on the people of Ford County.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favourite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbour and a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

As if the murder wasn't shocking enough, it was even more baffling that Pete's only statement about it - to the sheriff, to his defense attorney, to the judge, to his family and friends and to the people of Clanton - was 'I have nothing to say'.

And so the murder of the esteemed Reverend Bell became the most mysterious and unforgettable crime Ford County had ever known

Books to watch out for

Looking forward to revamping my book of the week feature, after a lull at the end of 2018. This was in part due to re-listening to old books, and to not driving anywhere near as much for various reasons. So apart from my Book of the Week, here’s a nice little round up care of Stylist Magazine.

2019 is already looking like being a brilliant year for ‘watershed’ books – including a long-awaited thriller, a Booker winner and breakout debuts which have already been snapped up for the small and big screens. And amongst them, my mentor Julie Cohen’s next novel, Louis and Louise. This is released on 24th January so will have a fuller review then. For now, if you’re after some stonking new author recommendations, how about the following – here’s a selection from the Stylist list, which took my fancy:

Queenie – by British author Candice Carty-Williams. Being called ‘the one to watch out for’ this novel sounds like being the best anti-heroine antidote to the social media generation with a real life tragi-comedy storyline and proper ‘uplit’ feelgood factor – I will definitely be getting this when out in April.

The Wych Elm – by Tana French. Being called ‘the most highly anticipated thriller, this one looks fascinating. Having already made her name with the Dublin mysteries (must look those up) Tana brings us this stand-alone thriller based on unreliable memories of youth in a PR guy struggling to recover from a horrible incident and a discovery in a tree. Any book Stephen King calls ‘Incandescent’ has to be a must. Out 21 February.

Daisy Jones and the Six – by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This debut has been snapped up by none other than Reese Witherspoon’s book club (Reese ‘devoured it in a day’) and Amazon for a 13 part TV series, it’s very appealing – but do you wait for the TV series? I tend to do that as I prefer to see the TV series first, since the book always has so much more detail it’s better to do it that way round, IMO. Filled with the glamour and excess of the late 70s music scene (yessss!) it’s going to be on my hit list and I hope the TV series is in 2019. Well done Taylor though – great debut.

Louis and Louise – by my mentor Julie Cohen. I am unspeakably proud of Julie and know that this book, which I have yet to read, deliberately waiting till it’s on audiobook, will be huge. This is being called the ‘thinking lit,’ and will be a top choice for book clubs everywhere this year. Out in January, be the first to recommend it to yours! ‘Two lives, lived twice’ is the clever byline, and features the same life told twice – once as a female and the other as a male hero. What difference does sex make to events in our lives? Julie explores this and will have people discussing it for days after reading it. Can’t wait. On pre-sale now.

Cape May – by Chip Cheek. Set in 1957 this book will have you transported to a different era, with shades of Mad Men and Revolutionary Road, apparently. I love the 1950s (the Marvellous Mrs Maisel is my current go to binge watch show, am on season 2) and this one looks fascinating as it’s set in a racy world of money and risky encounters… Because of the setting I would give it a go. Out end April.

The others are listed on the Stylist .co.uk website and are worth looking up if you like dystopia, quirky Richard Curtis type rom-coms and fantasy amongst others. Meanwhile, my own writing has resumed and my new year’s ambition to get my 5th novel finished is marching on apace.

He's back with another stonker - Lee Child brings us another adventure with Jack Reacher - one of the most successful fiction characters of all time. Past Tense is out - Jack Reacher 23 - see below for an exciting free sample.

I bought it on pre-order earlier this year and can't believe how fast November has come around. Lee Child was an interviewee on QVC once upon a time and I had the pleasure of talking to him about 'The Affair' - the prequel novel which kicks off his series of anti-hero/hero books. I was most struck by Lee saying he never really plans a novel out and mostly does one version - unlike most other authors. Jeffrey Archer's new tome, for instance, took 14 drafts. (See next week)

I've absolutely loved each and every one of Lee's Reacher books - and devoured all 18 straight. Then have got every one since. So to me, this is a given that I will buy the next and the next and I thank goodness Lee Child is so consistent each year in bringing us the latest outing, plus short stories and flash back novellas in between.

From number one best seller Lee Child, the thrilling new blockbuster featuring hero Jack Reacher.

Reacher, the eternal drifter, happens by chance on the small New Hampshire town he remembers his father was supposed to have come from. But when he starts looking for his dad's old home, he finds there's no record of anyone named Reacher ever having lived there...

I'm very excited as my top Reacher narrator Jeff Harding is once more in the driving seat. Yay! that's another couple of journeys to and from Devon sorted out! It makes the 200 mile journey fly by as I whizz back home to our writing retreat in Sheepwash - see Retreats for You below.

Go here to get it on Amazon.

Go here to listen to a free sample of the audiobook - it's fabulous! Just sign in with your regular amazon account and set up an audible account, and there it will be! I get through about 30 credits a year and bulk buying them is best for me, with so many long journeys. Enjoy.

Book of the Week - The Accidental Further Adventures of the Hundred Year Old Man

OMG this looks brilliant!

Remember The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared? By Jonas Jonasson? Quirky, made into a film in 2013 and subtitled, currently on Amazon Prime for free – going to watch it soon! Well… I just found out there’s a sequel! Now I liked other books by Jonasson, the Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden. I liked better than Hit Man Anders. tbh, but I’m giving this sequel a go as The Hundred-Year-Old Man definitely left me wondering what happened next! If you like having an author who you can enjoy across several novels and you like to be surprised, try these. Both Hundred-Year-Old books are highly reviewed too. Cool! Another one for my audible app!

"It all begins with a hot air balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they're not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined that the captain of the ship would be harbouring a suitcase full of contraband uranium on a nuclear weapons mission for Kim Jong-un....

Soon Allan and Julius are at the centre of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump. Things are about to get very complicated.... "

How timely and quirky and original and brilliant!

Book of the week

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. Very excited that just out this week is another one by Liane Moriarty, the number one best-selling author of Big Little Lies the award-winning TV show which featured Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman et al, the Golden Globe winning HBO series I loved and reviewed last year. This new one has nine perfect strangers stay for 10 days at a health resort to see how it can change them forever – stressed city dwellers coming to drop their baggage, try meditation, hot stone massage etc, all on the path to a better way of living or at least a better waistline. At least, that’s what they think…. all may not be how it seems…

I have always loved her books since I watched the TV series, and followed it up by listening to most of the rest of her novels. They cover some serious topics so I am interested to see where this one will take me…!

Review -

"One of the things that I really liked most about this book is Liane’s way with irony. There were a couple of points in the book where Liane writes about a slow, thriller of a book that one of the characters are reading. How the story developed slowly, how it is very character driven, how the story doesn’t develop much in the first half and it is all about getting to know the characters and that is exactly what Liane does in this book to her readers. She makes you work hard to be rewarded at the end of the book. It made me laugh and smile while I was reading it. Know that Liane know that she was manipulating the reader and she had the reader exactly where she wanted them and she wasn’t going to give anything away for free and you have to work with this book and get passed the half way point before the story really kicks off. For me that is very clever and Liane is a craftswoman of her work."

Book of the week – Strike is back!

Lethal White, by Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling in her crime writing alter ego) is out this week. Cormoran Strike’s fourth outing, with his newly married side-kick Robyn, are off on a twisting trail that leads them through the back streets of London into a secretive inner sanctum within parliament and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. As usual the narration by award winning actor Robert Glenister is outstanding. I love Strike's downplayed heroism and Robyn's credible gutsiness.

This series never disappoints, and every second of the epic 22 - I said 22! - hours is fabulously done - well written and insightful, with carefully crafted tension between the two main characters, the relationship between whom is the core of the plot. Loved it.

"I seen a kid killed.... He strangled it, up by the horse.

When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic.

Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott - once his assistant, now a partner in the agency - set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside.

And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been - Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much more tricky than that....

The most epic Robert Galbraith novel yet, Lethal White is the gripping next installment in the ongoing story of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott."

Book of the week – what a great book I’ve just bought.

From the Freelance Media Group meeting I went to this week, we heard about how best to hunt for an agent - a good one. And which big publisher is currently accepting 'open' submissions. I will write about it on my Devon based Retreats for You website here (blog being posted soon.)

It was thoroughly enjoyable and if you'd like to go to some of their meetings, featuring agents, publishers and experts, email me and I will put you in touch. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I followed up by buying a couple of books and am going to make one in particular my new Book of the Week on this, my regular website book blog:

Jane Corry’s ‘The Dead Ex.

The third twist-filled thriller from author of My Husband's Wife and Blood Sisters.

It’s a drama-packed suspense and has a good chunk of fab reviews already. Jane has also written several other books – she is a Sunday Times bestseller. I like choosing new authors with lots of other novels to go on to afterwards if I like this one. Jane is an experienced writer and tutor of writing so she knows a thing or two about plot. Great covers too.

This latest one is about a woman whose husband deserts her for a mistress when she gets ill. Then a body turns up. The slug line – ‘He cheated. He lied… He died…’  grabs you immediately. Check it out for yourself and see what you think! Psychological crime and thrillers are as popular as ever so this was a good one for me.

The third twist-filled thriller from The Sunday Times best-selling author of My Husband's Wife and Blood Sisters.

'I wish he'd just DIE.'

He said in sickness and in health. But after Vicki was attacked at work and left suffering with epilepsy, her husband, Daniel, left her for his mistress.

So when Vicki gets a call one day to say that he's gone missing, her first thought is 'good riddance'. But then the police find evidence suggesting that Daniel is dead. And they think Vicki had something to do with it.

What really happened on the night of Daniel's disappearance?

And how can Vicki prove her innocence when she's not even sure of it herself?

Jane cleverly interweaves the use of first person, an unreliable narrator, with third person to define other characters who drive the tale towards its dramatic ending - watch out for all those twists. Also - tip - do read each chapter heading as well. In audiobook listening, that's easy, as the narrator always reads it out! See below for a Quick Six Questions interview with Jane.

I particularly loved the immense detail about topics within the story which Jane writes about with confidence. I actually learned quite a lot, and that's always a plus. It makes me want to read the next one by an author. There was one twist in particular I didn't see coming at all, and if you like every loose ending to be clearly sewn up this is a good book for you. Recommended.

Six Quick Questions with Jane Corry

1. Inspiration. Where did the idea for suspense novel ‘The Dead Ex’ come from? (Your third thriller.)

A friend’s bike! I swim most mornings in the sea (in a wet suit) along with an artist friend of mine. One day, she turned up on a flash bike. I commented on it and she told me it belonged to ‘the dead ex’. Her former husband had sadly died and she’d had to sort out his possessions which was very distressing for her. It made me think about how difficult it is to let go of relationships even if they weren’t ideal. Then I linked it with prison (as I always do!) and THE DEAD EX was born. My friend gave me permission to use the title, by the way!

2. Research or experience. There is much detail about several topics - inc being inside a prison, and you spent time as ‘writer in residence’ at a prison - what does that mean? Thoughts about your time there? Also much info about epilepsy, and aromatherapy. Experience, or research?

I took a job as a writer in residence at a high security male prison when my first marriage ended. It was a completely new world for me. I was scared at times but there were also hours when I forgot I was in a prison. The power of the written word is such that it unites all kinds of people. My role as writer in residence was to run workshops to help prisoners write life stories, novels, short stories, poems and letters. I also brought in other authors to speak (including Colin Dexter) and I entered my men’s work for national prison competitions. The idea behind this is that writing can allow you to express yourself. Many inmates told me it enabled them to understand the horror of their crimes. I also wanted to bring epilepsy into THE DEAD EX  because it hit our family out of the blue three years ago. It was a subject I knew nothing about until then and I wanted to show its effects and how people learn to live with it. As for aromatherapy…what can I say? This was a lovely part of my research! In fact, I only came across it when a friend dragged me along to a session to keep her company. Like any writer, I asked my aromatherapist various questions such as how she knew which were the right oils to mix. She told me that it all depended on the client. ‘It’s a bit like a marriage,’ she said. Suddenly I knew exactly what I wanted my heroine Vicki to do for a living!

3. Evolution. There are lots of twists - were they all in draft one? How did it evolve to final draft?

I usually know which major twists I’m going to put in before I write. Then, while I am writing, I think of others - or even different ones from my first set of ideas.  When I’ve finished the first draft, I go back and sow clues. I love twists and turns. My second husband says I’m terrible to watch television with because I often guess what’s going to happen!

4. Being published. You say publishers can change titles. What did you call yours, and did you have any input into what they do?

My publishers have always been happy with my titles which is nice. But if they weren’t, I would agree to their suggestions. My view is that publishers have more experience of the market than I do.

5. What was your ‘getting published’ story?

I sent the first three chapters of MY HUSBAND’S WIFE (my first psychological suspense) to my agent and she loved it. Then a few weeks later, she rang to say that Penguin was interested. I didn’t dare let myself get too excited but as the day went on, her calls became more frequent. By the end of the day, Penguin wanted to meet me in London. I live in Devon but it so happened we were going to London that day for a big family party so I met my future editor Katy Loftus just beforehand From the minute we spoke, I could see that she ‘got’ my characters and that they were as real to her as they were to me.  It was so exciting! Penguin offered me a contract the next day. It was a dream come true.

6. What’s out next?

My next novel is called CHILD OF MINE. It’s about a young grandmother and a terrible secret. I'm currently working on edits for it now.

- And if people like The Dead Ex what can they choose next?

My first two novels are called MY HUSBAND’S WIFE and BLOOD SISTERS. They - like THE DEAD EX - were in the top ten of The Sunday Times. I’m also very excited because  Big Talk and Mr Mudd have acquired the tv serialisation rights to MY HUSBAND’S WIFE.

Finally, how can people keep in touch with you? Include the freelance media group info if you like.

Thanks to Jane!

I bought a couple of other fab sounding books which also cropped up during chats at the meeting, watch out for Phoebe Grant’s ‘The Doll House’ and ‘Marriages are Made in Bond Street’ by Penrose Halson. Plus, finally, a mention that former QVC presenter Anna Cookson, a BBC Radio Kent host, has her first one about to be published too – great title – ‘the Sound of your Soul’ out soon with Pegasus books – am hoping it’ll be on audio book so I can get it!

ps Glad to say Phoebe Morgan and her colleague Charlotte Mursell will be coming to give their talk on 'pitching to a publisher' at Retreats for You in March next year. The latest update will be coming out soon on our social media for @retreatsforyou an on the website www.retreatsforyou.co.uk - watch out for it and book early!

Book of the Week is the new one from Ken Follett. Regulars will know I love his Pillars of the Earth etc, historical series. So I thought I’d try The Key to Rebecca, a gripping thriller set during – yes you’ve guessed it – the second world war! It’s just out and I can’t wait to get stuck into it! I’ve got some long journeys coming up, backwards and forwards to Devon and now Wales – Lauren’s baby is due in just two weeks’ time! The stakes are high for the survival of the British campaign in North Africa, and only intelligence officer Major William Vandam and the beautiful courtesan Elene can put an end to the danger as Rommel’s troops come ever closer... ooo! It's even a bit steamy apparently!

This Amazon review sums up why I'm excited to read it -

The book more or less takes place over two days, the majority of it being filled with the flight of PanAm's Boeing 314 Clipper over the Atlantic, two days after Britain's declaration of war in 1939. The setting has a bit of Agatha Christie in it, with the difference being that you learn about the possibly dubious motives of the protagonists throughout the book, and the 'crime' happening towards the end, rather than the other way around.

Fascist sympathisers, arrested mobsters, Rusian princesses, movie stars, escaped Jewish scientists, and runaway thieves share the flight, all offering potentialities of being involved in the finale, and while you will not be kept guessing throughout (some clues are stronger than others), they form a sufficiently eclectic set of characters to make the book easy and exciting to read.

Book of the Week - as I mention on my latest QVC blog, this new audiobook takes us back to WW2 again, a period I've been loving and drawn to, since reading AJ Pearce's 'Dear Mrs Bird'.

The Code Girls is fab -

It's 1941 and Britain is at war. For the aristocratic Walsingham family this means their grand home being taken over by the armed forces. But for newcomers Ava, Maudie and Bella, this is a chance for something more. Each is ready to do their part for the war effort and soon become firm friends. But Lord Edward Walsingham seems like he is hiding something. And although he may be clever, he might have met his match in Maudie and the girls…

I really enjoy these class battle tales - especially when the lower classes or the women, get the upper hand!

amazon review -

'The Code Girls written by Daisy Styles for me was a wonderful read based on the lives of four girls who become best friends when they are brought together while working in a large house in Norfolk.
Ava arrives to as she thought she would become a Code girl, though her dream is soon destroyed but for her, she soon realises that the friendship she grows with the other girls who start work in the kitchen to feed the Code Girls who are being trained upstairs. She is joined with Ruby who has been working in the big house as maid and general dogs body. Along comes Maudie and the fourth girl though known as Bella West is actually Lady Annabel Walsingham but she has never been happier working with her now best friends while falling in love with the "Brig" as she lovingly calls him.
But this book for me was so much more than friendship, this was filled with action throughout and when they realise there is a spy in their midst the girls are soon doing their own style of "code work" to source the truth out and save the lives of those men who valiantly served their country.
I loved this book so much I read it on kindle and then got it via audio which was read by one of my favourite narrators and that is Anne Dover whose voice brought so much atmosphere to this marvellous read.
The Code Girls written by Daisy Styles is a wonderful read and I would happily recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction based on the Second World War.'

What a brilliant cover! The Stranger by Kate Riordan is my latest must-read for the summer. The way she weaves her wartime tale is very evocative of the era, intertwining colourful characters and vivid settings and with a premise that's so cleverly written it keeps you wanting to read more to find out what leads to the dramatic opening. I'm loving the period stories atm, and this, set during evacuation in a coastal town, features land girls - posh ladies from London, out of place in a seaside setting amongst country folk. Once again I'm llistening to the audio book and there are several narrators, helping to move the story along, reading distinct segments of the book. One of them has a peculiar way of splitting up the narration but overall it's good, particularly the dialogue and you can feel the emotions of the time, beset with tension of class differences and strict rules about behaviour of the era. A romance rekindled and lots of secrets in the big house, keep you page turning. Very good and highly recommended for a summer read.

When you're the outsider, who do you trust?

Cornwall, 1940. For decades, Penhallow Hall has stood frozen in time, protecting the secrets of its isolated inhabitants. But the far corners of England are no shelter from the war, and Penhallow must finally open its doors to strangers.

Three newcomers arrive, each looking to escape their past. They adjust easily to the routine - nightly blackouts, the threat of invasion - but tensions mount, and secrets are forced into the open. For one of them is not there by choice. And then, in the hushed hours of deepest night, a young woman is taken by the sea.

Was it simply a tragic accident? Or should the inhabitants of Penhallow have been more careful about whom they invited in?
