Selling your Story to Hollywood. Writing Children’s Books – Where to Begin. And New Steamy Chapter, Cover Reveal!
7 February 2014

WRITE SOMETHING WORTH READING OR... WRITE SOMETHING WORTH READING OR...

If you’re a regular to my ‘Read it Write it Sell it’ blogs, every Friday here, you’ll know how passionate I am that one day when I’m a grown up, I will live in LA and write movies! Well, one day, maybe that means I will sell the film rights for my novels. Therefore, the article below caught my eye! I’m due to go on a holiday soon, and am still working out whether or not to go to LA for the week, see friends, hang out in seventy degree heat (if only eh!) and meet up with some film folks. Or visit a film set if I can wangle it… Or maybe I’ll do that later in the year and just go to Champneys in Feb instead! Lol. Anyway, whatever it turns out to be one thing’s for sure – I’ll be doing a TON of writing!

Teleseminar Well we can all dream, can't we? These guys specialise in a topic in the hearts of all authors, deep down - selling your book to Hollywood. Hopefully the teleseminar they’re offering for free (around 6pm our UK time, Wed 12th Feb) isn’t just a hyped up sales pitch but contains some salient info. I’m going to try to listen in. More info meanwhile is on the reliable ‘Alli’ site here. Will report back next week if I managed to listen in!

New Project!

Once I have published the imminent ‘steamy extra chapter’ from Hawaiian Escape (see bottom of this blog for the cover sneaky peek!), I have a fab new project to finish. Inspired by Bridget Jones, the Diary of a Wannabe Selly Telly Host will be a tongue in cheek diary-style romance-based adventure of a young journalist’s foray into the world of shopping television! It’s hotly awaited by a couple of my beta readers, who are very excited about reading the ending. And then I’ll be cracking on with book three in the Hawaiian Trilogy. So it’s a busy time ahead. All that and I’m supposed to be finding myself a man and writing the ‘how to find a husband manual’ in 2014! Hah! Tell you what, if you know one who is suitable for me, put him in touch and save me some time? : - )

Kids’ Writing

A little while ago I was asked about writing for children, so I sought out a very experienced author, Sarah Webb, who has kindly given me some sage advice about what to do and how to approach it if you’re a beginner.

Her basic advice is below, and her full article can be found on her blog about how to write a picture book here.

Sarah is a bestselling author of ten novels and many children’s books including the hugely popular series for age 10+, Ask Amy Green. She worked in the book trade for many years as a bookseller and buyer and is on the board of Children’s Books Ireland and teaches writing for children at the Irish Writers’ Centre. She says -

“Debbie, with children's books, you should start with the age group - writing picture books is a different craft to writing a teen novel. I have all kinds of info on my website which may help the beginner. Hope the blog is useful. Basically my advice would be - read a lot of children's first, decide on an age group, then write!

Best, Sarah”

OTHER NEWS

-          If like me, you absolutely LOVE movies, here's a RiWiSi update with some of the big screen adaptations of best sellers in 2014. I definitely want to see The Book Thief, and The Monuments Men - the latter nothing to do with George Clooney... Honest! Have u read any of these books? If so, which do u think will make good movies? Read more here.

-          What a fabulous idea! If you didn't know, there's a drive ATM to urge readers to read women authors. ( #readWomen2014). Well this comprehensive and interesting list could be just the inspiration u need! D u see any of your favourites amongst them? I loved Zoe Heller as a writer, used to buy Sunday Times just to read her regular column when my kids were small. Ahhh, what a lovely Sunday morning treat that was, once the kids were sorted out. As we're all the holidays where I spent a third of the vacation time with nose in a paperback, but I realised they were mostly male! Clive Cussler, John Grisham et al. Then I got into reading romances, then writing romances. And they say rule 2 for writers (after rule 1- Write!) is rule 2 - Read! So if you're the same here's a little extra material to help your own words flow! Read more here.
