Book of the Week - Bridget Jones' Baby - with alternative ending!
9 November 2016

Two things this week - first, having just seen for the second time, the superb movie Bridget Jones's Baby, I'm making the book my book of the week, but it's not the same as the film - there's an alternative storyline...

Second, thought I'd mention that lovely Jo Cannon has done an amazing blog explaining how becoming a writer helped her overcome what happened to her, a tragic event which changed her life, several years ago. Her spin on the effect writing has had has really rammed the point home that successful people are not some super-woman or man, and often have their own story of adversity, so let it be an inspiration to you.

Go here to read her enlightening blog - The Person I've Become - or 'what I've really learned since becoming published.' And don't forget to check out the rest of her website, or my archives from around January, for news about her fabulous first novel 'The Trouble with Goats and Sheep.'

BOOK OF THE WEEK - Bridget Jones's Baby.

I couldn't resist this one. Partly because it's in audiobook - it'll be next on my list, believe me, for those long journeys I'm about to go do up and down the M4 from and to my new base in Devon. But also because... there's a twist - the book was written before Hugh Grant refused to play Daniel Cleaver once again. So in this book - there's no Jack Quant, it's all about Daniel and Mark Darcy again!

Now unlike some, I'm one of the many who LOVED Bridget Jones - Mad About the Boy, the 'ten years after' scenario published a couple of years ago, in which our Bridge is in her early 50s. I won't tell you what happens, but it presents a completely new era for our beloved singleton.

Well, 'Baby' is set in between. So Bridget is in her early forties, and still torn between two lovers. But in the film it's a newcomer, played by the delectable and heartbreakingly gorgeous Patrick Dempsey. Which was great, loved it. Reviewed it on my QVC blog 'watch' section, as usual. However, this book version is an intriguingly tempting alternative, and I'm looking forward to it chiefly because Samantha Bond is so bloody good at narration.

Go here to hear a sample and to get it on Amazon's Audible.

Considering 'Mad about the Boy' is the only audiobook novel I've listened to FOUR times, you can imagine how good the narration is.

So what's the new one all about?

Before motherhood before marriage Bridget with biological clock ticking very, very loudly finds herself unexpectedly pregnant at the eleventh hour: a joyful pregnancy which is dominated however by a crucial but terribly awkward question - who is the father? Mark Darcy: honourable decent notable human rights lawyer? Or Daniel Cleaver: charming witty notable f***wit?

One reviewer on Audible for 'Baby' says - "generally, Helen Fielding doesn't do subtlety and there are lots of funny and exaggerated swipes at the way life is these days, but the growing love between Bridget and her unborn baby and the final lines of the story hit a genuine and emotional high note."

Coming soon - the new Jack Reacher, timed to coincide with the latest movie on the big screen. And more lovely Christmassy themed delights.
