Which Authors Changed Your Life? Same as Me? Plus Book of the Week -
25 June 2015

Sheryl Browne's first with Choc Lit Sheryl Browne's first with Choc Lit

This week my pal and fellow Choc Lit author, and recent book of the week subject, Alison May did a guest blog all about the authors which have changed her life. It got me thinking – amongst the classics like Shakespeare and the Brontes were Marian Keyes and kids’ author Beverley Cleary – go here to read why, and see if the same thing happened to you with a childhood author.

So what are yours?

Mine would definitely be Enid Blyton, since her ‘five find outers and dog’ probably set up my love of mysteries and cosy crimes. Plus Clive Cussler – my main fave author for most of my late teens and 20s-30s, all about adventurer Dirk Pitt (a kind of James Bond for the National Underwater Marine Agency or NUMA!) In fact it might even have been the reason why my daughter Lauren, aged around 8 said ‘when I grow up, mummy, I want to be a hairdresser, a waitress or a marine biologist! Lol!

But the main person who has changed my life is an author called Julie Cohen – she’s a fantastic mentor and I’ve been on so many of her writing courses, she really helps leapfrog people past the stage where they ‘don’t know they don’t know’, you know?! Anyway she is also a successful professional, having been a Richard and Judy pick for Dear Thing. And at the end of July, when the majority of my house move packing is over and done, I’ll be off to Literature Wales (see below) for another week being mentored by her skills – she and co-tutor Rowan Coleman. Can’t wait!

Book of the Week – Sheryl Browne – The Rest of my Life

As featured in the top pic, Sheryl’s book is my pick, and you can pre-order on Amazon here. I must say it sounds right up my street! She’s a fellow Choc Lit author – this is her first with our publisher.

“You can’t run away from commitment forever … “

Adam Hamilton-Shaw has more reason than most to avoid commitment. Living on a houseboat in the Severn Valley, his dream is to sail into the sunset – preferably with a woman waiting in every port. But lately, his life looks more like a road to destruction than an idyllic boat ride…

Would-be screenplay writer Sienna Meadows realises that everything about Adam spells trouble – but she can’t ignore the feeling that there is more to him than just his bad reputation. Nor can she ignore the intense physical attraction that exists between them.

And it just so happens that Adam sees Sienna as the kind of woman he could commit to. But can he change his damaging behaviour – or is the road to destruction a one-way street?

Heartache, humour, love, loss & betrayal, Sheryl Browne brings you edgy, sexy, poignant fiction. The RNA shortlisted her for Innovation in Romantic Fiction, and if you like it, great news - she has seven other books already published! The new one was recommended by the WH Smith Travel fiction buyer, so that bodes well for it being a paperback later in the year, like my Take a Chance on Me will be in December.  More from Sheryl here and well done, missus!

Other news –

-          Writing courses in Wales the place I’m off to on 20th July for my next Julie Cohen/Rowan Coleman course is ‘Literature Wales’ – go here to find out what other courses the centre runs, based in Gwynedd.

-          York Festival – Writers’ Workshop – book now – September 4-6th, one of the most comprehensive and worthwhile workshops to go to – tons of choices – and super for beginners. More here.

best wishes
