Book of the week - the Real Downton Abbey Countess. Countdown to PG trilogy in Paperback! And Links to my books.
7 November 2014

books are magic books are magic

This week I’ve been loving a fascinating book on audible called Lady Catherine and the real Downton Abbey.’  Plus I’ve been preparing to go away on another writing retreat this weekend with Julie Cohen, genius mentor and tutor. The aim is to get my edits done for Hawaiian Affair, for ‘my publisher’ (gotta love being able to say that!) Choc Lit. And then to work on the plot for ‘French or Dutch,’ my next title, working it into a series of novellas, which can also be made into TV episode scripts. Well that’s the plan! Next week I’m off to LA for a week, too, so that’ll be great for more writing too! One of my favourite places is to be in a diner writing, watching Hollywood life go on all around me. Can’t wait!

Some interesting ‘other news’ is as usual below – to help you if you’re a writer - enjoy!

PS if you did buy and enjoy Hocus Pocus ’14 – click here – do be sure and review it afterwards for us!

News Update – Coming soon - Hawaiian Prize Trilogy in one PG paperback – out 28th November – my three existing romance novels, Hawaiian Escape, Hawaiian Affair and Hawaiian Retreat, about sisters Sadie and Helen, and their romantic fortunes, or misfortunes in some cases! All in one book, for xmas gifts – with the most steamy bits omitted so you can confidently give it as a present! Three weeks and counting!

Book of the Week - ‘Lady Catherine and the real Downton Abbey.’ As you may know if you’re a regular, I’m researching the 1920’s for a new series of novellas, French or Dutch. In the process, a book caught my eye which was about the real Downton Abbey – the inhabitants of Highclere Castle, the location used for Downton in the TV series. Thoroughly enjoyable as a snapshot of life in those times, there’s a lot of personal thoughts, dialogue and presumably, info on events in the inter war period taken from letters written at the time. I loved the scene setting, the elements of everyday life sprinkled into the history and the characterisation that comes through loud and clear. Very well written and also well read by the current Countess herself. Some elements ring a bell as potentially having inspired Julian Fellowes, the creator of the TV series, eg that Catherine was an American woman, but mostly it’s just a fascinating account of a period of unprecedented change. It takes you through the abdication of Edward the VIIIth, as well as the whole of the second world war, from the personal point of view of individuals affected by the events and repercussions of the era. Fabulous, and highly recommended. There’s another one, about Almina, Catherine’s predecessor, the woman married to the Earl of Carnarvon who discovered Tutaknhamun’s tomb – so that might be next on my list!

I also bought myself a soundtrack of Downton at Christmas – some lovely choral tracks – which you can just imagine being sung in the church at yuletide in Downton. Go here for more info.
