Hocus Pocus Focus #2. How Now High Brow? And AudioBook of the week 'Memories of a Future Life'
10 October 2014

Indecisive Novelists Indecisive Novelists

Last week I read an interesting blog which made me go – yeh! Nick Hornby – ‘About a Boy,’ ‘Fever Pitch’ – was quoted in the Telegraph as saying ‘Can’t get into high brow novels? Then ditch them!’ I must admit there are two novels – well, audiobooks – which I gave up on in the last year – both ‘high brow’ to me. The Luminaries, the booker prize winner last year, I found a bit rambling and not too gripping or well written. And Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which I sooo wanted to enjoy, I found quite unlistenable. Grrr. And there’s me trying to be all cultured, like. Well anyway, it made me feel a bit better to read his words. Speaking at the Cheltenham Literary Festival, about his new novel Funny Girl, Hornby argued even children should not be compelled to read books they do not want to, saying setting targets of books they "should" read is counterproductive. Read the whole article here. What do you think?

I hate those book club snobs who think they are better than others, believing everyone ‘should’ read certain books. To be frank, I read The Sun, and The New Scientist and New Magazine for the celeb gossip. I write steamy romances and read Mills and Boons, I watch tent pole movies, or big rom coms and Celeb Big Brother – so do it your way. Quite honestly, life’s too short to feel inferior for not finishing a book you’re not enjoying.

Audiobook of the Week – however, one I’ve been enjoying very much this week is my latest audiobook ‘My Memories of a future life’ by Roz Morris. It’s again an interesting, well-crafted story by an author who previously ghost-wrote celeb books and now teaches writing too. It’s so far taking me through reincarnation themes (I must have a little thing about that lately!) and introducing a whole new area of enlightenment and learning, with info about musicians and performers and therapists. Great ride – will keep you informed! So far though, it’s highly recommended…

Reviver Author releases new title Seth Patrick’s Reviver was my top book of 2013, I absolutely loved it! This week Seth told me on Twitter he is bringing out the sequel around June 2015 and I can’t wait! Meanwhile he’s novelised the hit TV series from summer last year – the international Emmy Award winning cult series – ‘The Returned’ has just been published on eBook. May be worth a look if you love tense spooky thrillers! Go here for The Returned.
