The 'what' Princess? For the Love of Audio. & Bob Mayer's Take on What it Takes to be a Successful Author
24 July 2014

JUDGE ME BY MY COVER JUDGE ME BY MY COVER

News Update. Had a couple of interesting conversations this week regarding the future of my Hawaiian Trilogy – I can’t say much more at the mo – if I told you I’d have to kill you! Haha! But suffice to say it’s very interesting… If I hear within two weeks, about one of the things, I’ll be able to share it – about how the paperbacks may be available in a trilogy at some point – but if I say nothing you’ll guess that it just kinda went away!...

Meanwhile the reviews are mounting up and I’m pretty chuffed as usual, to see how well received it’s being. Another review is below.

The ‘What’ Princess. I’m currently sitting in the Priory Bay Hotel in the Isle of Wight – in Sandown – where a couple of us QVC presenters have come for some product training with the Liz Earle skincare team tomorrow. And I’m surrounded by families with lots of kids. It reminded me of when I used to take our two (now 27 and 24 – God that makes me feel old!) to restaurants – and yes, Bradley aged about 5 was a little git! Lol! But what kept them amused – a lot – was reading out loud to them. Their fave books were ones which generally speaking are not around nowadays – Lauren once dressed up as the Princess who was a tomboy and didn’t want to be a Princess - but I can’t recall the name of the book! Does anyone remember a book with a profile drawing of a teenage princess in dark blue serf/villain (as opposed to Princess) outfit, on a bike, with a silver helmet and a home-made lance…  Let me know if so – leave a comment below!

Otherwise do let me know what your favourite ones were!

I did the whole of Narnia, twice, and of course much of Harry Potter (although mine reached teenage ‘reading to me is kids’ stuff now mum’ age at about book 4 so we saw the rest on the big screen.) But it gave me a taste of reading out loud – which my mum had done to me! One of the reasons why I’m quite keen to do audible now, for my books. At some point. Maybe – but it’d probably have to be the PG! lol!

Anyway hope you’re enjoying the sunny weather, I see lots of updates about people outside with a book! Next week the long-awaited paperback of Hawaiian Retreat! Promise! Lol. All the links to all my books are on the ‘Writer’ page – or below. Enjoy!

Hawaiian Retreat – latest reviewsclick here to see it on Amazon -

“This is the third book in Ms Flint’s trilogy and follows the story of Sadie’s sister, Helen. Helen has not been lucky in love - a failed marriage has left her feeling bruised, with a strong need to control everything in her life. She has to undergo a long and tortuous journey that takes her to some fabulous locations, before she finally discovers what she really needs to make her happy. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series and was really looking forward to reading the third and (I assume) final one. I was not disappointed and neither will you be. The perfect summer holiday read if you’re looking for recommendations” CM, Amazon.

Other news –

-           Faint Praise – snotty about self-publishing. The Guardian self-publishing awards come under some spot on criticism from JJ Marsh in her blog – excellent points about how many great books are out there, so why choose a winner you criticise as not being professional enough! There are enough professional quality self-published books out there to not merit the ‘Grauniad’s’ patronising praise of its other winner too. Go read her blog here.

-          The Mindset of A Successful Author - Joanna Penn, one of my mentors in self-publishing – has done a fascinating podcast with prolific author Bob Mayer – in keeping with the above topic of audio books! - click here to listen to it!

-          Why Ask for Fair Play? And here’s Bob Mayer’s ‘write it forward’ blog asking why self-published authors – and even big publishers – should ask for Fair Play from a big corporation like Amazon. Food for thought – and points very well made. Click here to read it.

Courses -

-          Writers’ Workshop – York Festival Learn more about writing well in one weekend, than you thought possible, from 30+ professional course leaders – this September. I went twice – recommended! Don’t forget you can see agents with a one to one too! click here for list of agents

Beginners’ Guide And if you’re a complete beginner and want to self-publish, remember my basic guide published two weeks ago – click here for beginner's tips for self-publishing -  a summary of info, sites and links to help you on your way.
