Debbie Flint

I don't know about you but this Spring weather suddenly makes everything seem brighter, doesn't it? With the beautiful blossom on the trees, the first signs of bluebells in the woods and... the most massive clear out underway, in my house at least, well, then you know Spring has sprung.

Last weekend's Mothers' Day giveaway worked really well - full info on my RiWiSi page, if you're interested in seeing what position my free short spooky story got to in the UK kindle free chart, and how best to measure self publishing success.

Plus click here to see a sneaky peek at my new cover of 'Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter' - the first part, finished last weekend in Devon @retreatsforYou is currently being read by my beta reading group on facebook, Debbie's Readers. Next week' I'll reveal the full cover! And have an extract or two!

On the Back to You page, this Monday's Update will be all about getting yourself right mentally (ok, for some of us this is always going to be difficult!) on the topics of meditation, stretching and also a look at how your emotions can get in the way of recovery or change in The Emotion Code.

Plus the QVC Blog of course, brings you a summary of my week in Devon as well as what happened when IT guest Lee Hohbein and I went out on a networking party evening!

Meanwhile, I'm off to finish my Diary of a Wannabe on another writing break (I have to use up annual leave) so it's ready for Easter weekend publishing! And Dear Daughter (or DD as they say on Twitter), Lauren, plus boyfriend Nick and little spaniel Baloo, move in this weekend. For six months. Theoretically. Unless we kill each other first... No, it should be lovely, I'm kidding. They're saving to buy a house so am being a good mummy and helping out.

Hence the clear out. Now, with twenty plastic tubs already in the newly tidied garage, and another ten still to come, am I going to be able to finish it by the time they arrive with their own boxes of cra... I mean of nick nacks... lol.

I'll just have to make sure I don't pack up the dog.

Have a fab week!

In this week’s Monday update -– stretching – if you can’t puff yourself out exercising, you just gotta stretch! And meditation – seriously good in the battle against emotional eating. Plus ‘The Emotion Code’ by Bradley Nelson – a fascinating insight into trapped emotions creating disharmony and issues in the body.

After another weekend of solid writing, this week I’m devoting the Back to You Monday Update to body issues and helping your mind. Meditation is something that’s been part of my life since 1991, when I regularly used to babysit seven under-fives including my own two, and thought I was going to kill somebody. : - ) So on the advice of a friend, I took up TM (Transcendental Meditation) and have never looked back. But you don’t have to go further than youtube, searching ‘meditation’ to find some lovely guided sessions, which could help settle your mind and bring you calm. It’s a big part of Dr Murad’s philosophies, which I mention on my main QVC Blog this week, (see blogs tab above) as I’m doing a show featuring his skincare on Saturday 5th at 6pm (if you miss it, I’ll add the link here after). Plus my pal fellow QVC presenter Craig Rowe posted on our Back to You QVC group on Facebook this week about a free ‘how to meditate’ link if you sign up for newsletters on this site – more info here. It’s well worth doing believe me, in any quest for holistic health – especially if stress makes you an emotional eater. If you are, BTW, see the Monday Essay at bottom featuring The Emotion Code book.

Stretching

If you can’t do Yoga, if you can’t do pilates, if you can’t move very well for whatever reason, you can always stretch. Stretch something. To some extent. Again, youtube is a font of knowledge and has many clips about stretching which you can use to get yourself lengthening muscles that stay tight for far too long every day. I like this one, if you’re not sure which to watch/do. Make like a cat or dog and give your body what it needs – a good old stretch, in a safe, careful way. There are tons of books on Amazon on stretching too – it’s a pet subject of mine – there will be more about it in the updated version of Till the Fat Lady Slims, coming in the autumn. Meanwhile, go here for some great options to help you feel better and less stressed by moving your bod in a gentle easy way. And of course, the ultimate is a pilates machine – but if you can’t get one, just streeeeeetch! It’s amazing how good it makes you feel if your body’s in need, and you may find the signals you were getting weren’t hunger at all, they were ‘I want to stretch!’

Bodyblade Update – another fab comment on our Back to You QVC facebook group from Debbie Clout this week –

“My body blade arrived today, it is a lot of fun! I watched Debbie Flint with Bruce's youtube clip to get going, then found loads of other clips that work on different areas, arms, shoulders, tums for inspiration. Think I am going to love it! Harder on my non-dominant hand, but guess it gets easier with practice”

It really is an amazing piece of equipment and yes there is lots of inspiration on youtube for that too!

OTHER NEWS –

-          7 a day bunkum – ie the study and headlines this week are bunkum, not eating lots of veg every day. Zoe Harcombe takes it apart again. Scary how headlines are launched from such spurious science. Don’t get me wrong – eating loads of veg is miraculous for some people’s health – but this study isn’t gonna prove it to anyone who examines it closely. Plus other headlines in papers this week made it clear that fruit juices and fruit desserts etc shouldn’t be included in any five (or seven) a day claim anyway. Read more here.

-          Ten tips on how to quit sugar using healthy foods – and a very good site for all such things! Read more here.

-          And don’t forget on my QVC Blog there’s always a little Back to You update too and some funnies! Go here.

Lots below about getting on our Facebook group, Back to You QVC, about how to take part in our challenge, and don’t forget to add your own update! Plus the new series will be beginning again weekly on QVC UK in September.

Next week’s Monday Update – getting serious about losing weight – exploring the barriers. And an extract from Till the Fat Lady Slims. I’m off on a writing holiday now to finish my third novel – as you may know it’s called ‘Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter’ and will be out at Easter! Am back on air Sunday evening (14th) with Elemis and a new midnight launch of a Fuji camera – join me!

Keep healthy!

THE MONDAY ESSAY – THE EMOTION CODE

A week or so ago I got recommended a book by Dr Bradley Nelson called The Emotion Code. It starts off with his own stories of how he helped his family, including small children, unblock some of their negative emotions holding them back. I’m reading it with great interest now so I thought I’d pass it on to you too – if you have already read it and have a comment, do leave it at the bottom of this page! Here’s the blurb – and do go read the ‘look inside’ on Amazon.

You see, there are lots of wonderful techniques and tools in the world for helping to make change happen permanently – it only takes being open to new things, and receptive to unusual information and you never know, maybe you’ll be like one of the people in his book. Enjoy

Blurb

“Do Bradley Nelson reveals how emotionally-charged events from your past can still be haunting you in the form of "trapped emotions"; emotional energies that literally inhabit your body. Dr. Nelson explains clearly and concisely how trapped emotions can create pain, malfunction and eventual disease. In addition, trapped emotions can exert a dramatic effect on how you think, the choices that you make, and how successful you will be. Perhaps the most important discovery that Dr. Nelson has made is that trapped emotional energies will often gather around the heart, creating a "Heart-Wall" that may block you from giving and receiving love freely. The Emotion Code is a powerful and simple way to rid yourself of unseen baggage. Releasing trapped emotions often results in the sudden disappearance of physical problems, self-sabotage, and recurring relationship difficulties. Filled with real-world examples from many years of clinical practice, The Emotion Code is a distinct and authoritative new work that is destined to become an instant classic on self-healing.”

So my Mothers’ Day giveaway went with a bang! And apart from the qvc blog comp giveaway, for those who didn’t realise I had a freebie eBook short story on offer, called When Dreams Return. Plus a 99p offer over the weekend for my Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss /autobiographical book. They both sold well and I had lots more reviews added to Amazon. They’re one way of measuring success if you self-publish – for instance, my Hawaiian Affair is just 4 short of 100 five star reviews, and I’m sure that helps some people decide what to choose. Does it you? It does me.

Numbers of sales/downloads is also a measure – 2390 in UK and 285 in US got When Dreams Return. This means I now have 14 pages (or 70 book) ‘also bought’s’ – where your book can appear reciprocally on others’ pages too – it all helps.

But the biggest measurement is of course the charts. On Amazon there are loooooads of charts, some very obscure. However, I’m glad to say I reached number one in the freebie chart for WDR under ‘books/fiction/horror’ – which meant more people would see it if they explored the charts looking for new titles. And even better, I got as high as number 23 in the overall UK kindle free book chart!

And very pleasing it was too!

Till the Fat Lady Slims also reached the heady heights in the paid charts of around 450, one of the highest positions any of my books has reached – so thank you everyone who took part. One of the best things about a kindle countdown deal for those registered to their exclusive service KDP select (a box you tick when you upload your ebook to amazon via KDP) is the new countdown analysis – statistics which showed me I sold over 1000% more books in that four days than previously. Anyway, it all helps to spread the word about me as an author, even if it doesn’t rack up the dollars massively. Interesting promotion tools though eh? And well worth considering if you self-publish.

In fact, if you do, next week I’m going to feature a guide to what tools you can use in your quest to promote your own first self-published book – some are obvious, but some you might not know about, so do come back next week!

Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter – THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

And now Mothers’ Day weekend promotions are over, the serious countdown begins to the next book – a fictional (honestly!) story of a twenty-something trainee journalist and her quest to become the next star of home shopping TV, or selly-telly. Behind the scenes shenanigans and an unusual romance feature in this cross between Bridget Jones, Alan Partridge, and Eddie Murphy in HolyMan. Here’s a little teaser of the cover – the whole thing will be revealed next week! And the countdown is on – till Easter weekend – just two weeks to go!

PLUS – NEWSFLASH – both Hawaiian Escape and Hawaiian Affair will both be on offer at just £1.52 Easter weekend – don’t miss it!

FRIDAY FICTION FOCUS – Cover Reveals, by Goodreads.

Cover reveals according to Goodreads

In this segment, we're going to discuss how covers work on Goodreads, as well as a few promotional ideas involving great book covers. Read on for more!

“GOODREADS: How To - Cover Reveals

A cover reveal is a promotion that uses assets you already have -- your book cover and the actual text of your book. The idea is simple: use the unveiling of your cover as a moment to promote your book. We've found these typically work best for books in a series or for mysteries, romance, and YA books, but that’s not to say a creative business book author can’t apply this strategy as well.

Here are the basic steps on how to set up a cover reveal on Goodreads, but it’s only one way of doing this. We’d love to hear your ideas!

1. Select a date for your cover reveal. Set this date several months before your publication to build anticipation. Your cover reveal will probably be one of the first promotions you run for your book.

2. Create a placeholder image. You can use a simple black and white (or purple or yellow or blue...) image with the text “Cover to be revealed on [insert date].” Upload it to your book page. This will let Goodreads librarians know that you will be doing a cover reveal and will warn them not to upload a cover before the date of the reveal.

3. Create an event on Goodreads to start spreading the word. Invite people to RSVP. Those who RSVP will receive an automatic reminder email the day before the reveal.

4. In the event description, encourage people to add your book to their To-Read shelves by offering extra content. For example, offer to release the first chapter of the book as an exclusive excerpt if 100 people add the book.

5. Keep track of the number of people adding the book to their To-Read shelf via your stats page. You can get to this page from your author dashboard.

6. Reveal the cover on the day you announced by uploading it to your book page. Share the news via your other social media accounts!

Note the there is always the risk of your cover being accidentally released via your publisher or through an automatic feed. Let your publisher know you're planning a reveal, and do everything within your power to ensure the cover doesn’t get leaked! Once the cover is out on Goodreads or elsewhere, that’s it -- there’s no do-over.

Quick Tip: We don't delete covers!

This is a Goodreads policy that was implemented a long, long time ago. As an author, you may not love this policy, but consider it from the vantage point of the reader:

A reader shelves a particular edition of a book, perhaps because it’s the edition on his shelf in real life, or perhaps because he just really likes the cover! Months later he returns to Goodreads to find the book to start reading next, but doesn’t recognize the cover because it has been changed. That's not a great experience for the reader. We want our members to be able to shelve the exact edition they read, regardless of whether that edition has a new cover or not.

That doesn't mean your book page has to sport an out-of-date cover, though. As a Goodreads Author, you can have a Goodreads Librarian create an alternate cover edition, and then you can make that the new primary edition for your book. To make a new edition the primary edition, go to that edition's book page and click "edit details." Click the link on the right-hand side that says "Set this book as the primary edition for this work." Contact our librarians or our support team when you have any questions about covers.

Keep in mind that for self-serve advertising you can manually add any image you like. Since you can create an unlimited number of ads within a campaign, why not test out which cover gets more clicks?

Another fab week, including some interesting home cooked food for me at the writing retreat I went to over the weekend – gluten free stuff and some really tasty brownies! And I hate brownies! Except these ones. Deborah Dooly at Retreats for You in Devon is an amazing cook. So tapping into the old Freedom Eating choices was made extra diverse this week. (Long way of saying I had some cake! Lol). Funny how it makes my hand joints ached a bit next morning. Still – once in a while won’t hurt. However, we are now half way to our end of June deadline (and summer party and joint book launch), so from here on in I will be stepping up the approach in order to obtain the stunning before and afters I want for that flatter toned tummy that’s part of my own Break the Habit Challenge.

How are you doing? We have a lot of updates each week on our two Facebook groups. (see below for info)

Our Back to You group is expanding still – welcome to all recently joined members! Up to 760 members now – hope to reach 1000 by time it comes back in September!

Till the Fat Lady Slims – Freedom Eat Like a Slim Person to Break Free from Diet Hell

Just to remind you – there’s only one more day of the special offer of Till the Fat Lady Slims on Amazon at 99p – so do go get it asap! Even if you just order it now, then it’s on your amazon account ready for when you get your kindle app or whatever. Another wonderful testament to the success of Freedom Eating in the weight loss war :

I just love this book, it is helping me overcome 50 plus years of dieting, which ultimately has cost me thousands and left me with the same old weight problem. This book frees you from all that and when reading it you can relate to so much of the content. My honest opinion is that I only wish I had read this book when it originally came out, but better late than never. Buy it, put it into practice and you will not be disappointed.” Karen Whenman, Amazon review Feb 2014

Thanks so much Karen and I’m so glad so many people are taking advantage of it whilst it’s only 99p. Reverts on Monday night to normal pricing!

By the way, this was me at my fattest in recent years, after straying from the principals, and before I went macrobiotic. #scaryBeforePicAlert!

(Plus my short romantic suspense When Dreams Return eBook is also on offer for Mothers’ Day weekend – FREE! – don’t forget to get that too asap!)

OTHER NEWS –

-          Podcast – Macrobiotics for Health – seriously, if you need to address certain issues in your body, more and more experts are saying number one, look at nutrition. Here’s Marlene’s explanation of why ‘eat natural, small amounts, mostly plants’ can be so beneficial. It’s actually her talking – and it makes for some fascinating listening. Click here for more.

-          How a Japanese Diet Could Lengthen Your Life? Course a lot of macrobiotics is also within a typical Japanese diet (before Western fast foods arrived) and they have some of the longest lived people in the world – eg miso, tofu, rices etc. They eat ten per cent of the world’s fish. They eat small portions – you’re starting to see a pattern here! Click here to read on.

-          Why a Vascular Surgeon Chose an Alternative to Statins. The debate rages on – and each to their own, under medical supervision. However, what if you’re a vascular surgeon yourself? Here’s one man’s view and what happened when he took drastic action. Sugar, it turns out, was one of the most harmful things in his battle against high cholesterol. Interesting read from the Telegraph. More here.

Lots below about how to take part on Facebook and on the new series beginning again in September. And don't forget some other funnies on my new QVC Friday blog! Go to blogs tab at the top of this page to read it.

Next week’s Monday Update – stretching – if you can’t puff yourself out, you just gotta stretch! And meditation – seriously good in the battle against emotional eating. THE MONDAY ESSAY – the Magic of Mooli (Daikon) - found in exotic veg sections of eg big Tesco's!

Yes it’s another of those weird and wonderful foods I’d never heard of before going macrobiotic but when you find out some of the things you can do with it (ooer!! Lol) you realise how much more you can do with foods. If you’ve seen some of the funny pics of mooli (or daikon) circulating on the internet, you’ll know that this type of long white radish can grow absolutely huge! Lasts ages then, if you want to grate it and make a tea by steeping it in hot water then drinking the tea. Needless to say Marlene Watson Tara has a good section on it on her website, and she uses the home remedies to great effect too.

See also her sections on ginger compresses for various ailments too.

For more info start here, but best thing is just google ‘benefits of mooli’ and be amazed what comes up!

NEXT WEEK – ‘The Emotion Code’ by Bradley Nelson – a fascinating book about trapped emotions somewhere in the body causing imbalance. And the magic of meditation!

Well here it is! And how excited am I!

This is my 8th title on Amazon, technically (if you count the steamy and PG versions of my romance novels as separate) and it has been created as a lovely little freebie for Mothers' Day Giveaway on weekend of 28th-31st! Do come back then for more info. And meanwhile just make sure you download the free Kindle app if you don't have a Kindle. Easy!

Plus I'm having my Mothers' Day a bit early this year so me and my two kids and their partners can all go to a nice restaurant together for our celebration - which will be a week before the actual one, 'cos I'll be away on a writing weekend. Got tons of the stuff to do before June, so you can't blame me!

Am off for a week next week getting the house cleared a bit for my daughter to move back in with her boyfriend Nick and my grand-pog Baloo the spaniel. So it'll be a busy one!

Do visit my QVC Blog every Friday - this week, some funnies from QVC plus what I think is one of the best inventions for sedentary writers, ever!

Have a great week!

best wishes

This week it’s Cover Reveal time! I finally finished the spooky romance ‘When Dreams Return’ – what happens when widowed Chelle uses a magic full moon ‘conjure up your ideal man’ spell and what’s the secret of the mysterious black cat! As promised, it’ll be a Mothers’ Day Giveaway so come back here next week for the link – you just need the Kindle app if you haven’t got a kindle – easy!

What do you think of the cover? It’s lovely Angela Oltmann’s handiwork again and she knocked it up in no time too! I’d highly recommend her if you’re looking for an efficient and affordable cover designer too. AngelaOltmann.com. She’s already done my ‘Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter’ too.

Giveaway Don’t forget – now it’s only ONE week left until the Mothers’ Day Giveaway! All the info is on the main RiWiSi page of my QVC Blog (see blogs tab above) but basically When Dreams Return will be a freebie on eBook via Amazon, and my semi-autobiographical Till the Fat Lady Slims anti-diet eBook will be on offer on a countdown deal from 28-31st incl, at just 99p! That’s nearly 70% off! Whoop!

Plus below – CampNaNoWriMo – I wrote Hawaiian Escape almost entirely during November 2013 so I’ve joined NaNoWriMo on line for when I write my Hawaiian Retreat, book 3 in the steamy romance trilogy… Choosing your Genre with scriptwriting guru Robert McKee… and the most amazing invention ever for sedentary writers! Enjoy.

Have a great week!

-          The Writing Treadmill – oooo two birds with one fitness-gadget-shaped stone! I read about this, ironically, on my Medical MOT trip up London with mummy this week – (full info on my QVC Blog – see blogs tab above.) What an amazing idea! I’d heard Russell Blake talking about it and saying that’s how he manages to keep writing for up to 8 hours a day. So – I’m investigating getting one, as a pressie to myself for my 52nd birthday in May. Will keep you informed!

-          Script Guru on Choosing Your Genre Robert McKee, one of my favourite script doctors has a fab blog – on his latest post, how to choose genre. But look below too for an analysis of the Lego Movie – yes really! And the Set up and Pay off in writing comedy.
