Less Clutter More Joy

Apologies this blog was late being finished and did not get sent out as a newsletter! Here it is anyway....

Clutter clearing is 'modern day alchemy' apparently. And I can vouch for that after another long break in Devon - with - finally - a super new space to put all the exercise gear out, and a clear office too, there's a lot to be said for it. I got on to this subject after reading this post, including a free video apparently, about why making room for tidiness in your life is so effective - go here to read/listen to it. And if you do it too, let me know if it gives you joy also.

It's all about following the joy nowadays for me. I found a little rock on the beach when I took the dogs down for a second stint near Bude, on the most blustery day I've ever spent on the English coastline. And it had what looked like a kind of a heart pattern with a kind of an arrow through it - ahhhh bless ! See main pic.

And it made me feel good. Anything that lifts your spirits and gives your more energy afterwards is worth chasing - don't you think? And anything that lowers it, you should not feel guilty if you cut it right out of your life. Even people.......

Yes, another hot topic this week at the retreat was the subject of emotionally abusive relationships - I finally got the message from the universe about this topic having had it discussed several times at retreats, so it's time to own up to some awful secrets - as it might help someone. It's amazing what a difference it can make if you let others into your heartache, as long as by doing so you're not actually manipulating them! Anyway I've written a blog about it - it's here. Go read it and see what you think.

This week's QVC blog including latest early bird links to liz earle and skechers is here - and includes a ton of pics and videos of when the BBc came to Sheepwash, when we did our Medical Detection Dogs vintage teas weekend. it was super to see so many people come down to support us, and we raised a lot of money and more importantly awareness, for these clever canines. Plus Charlie Bears' Will and Charlie presented the £4000 cheque to the charity for the sale of little Bones bear/dog - so generous.

Lots going on - keep in touch with me via my Facebook page here for most updates, or twitter @debbieflint.

much love - more next week

Deb's new book is out! (Jan 6th) = Till the Fat Lady Slims - Break free from Food Prison (2017) - well it's out! And as promised, here's the cover reveal! This latest version has several chapters that have never been in any other version, about my own story - much more in depth than ever before. Most people who love it say that it's like reading their own journey, so this may resonate even more given what I reveal inside it! It'll be available to order in

bookshops and of course online.

Here's the interview I did for fun little website OAPs Chat - part one and part two of the interviews, explaining all about it.

And here's the link to Choc Lit, the publisher's TTFLS page, with links to all the different ways you can now order it - all platforms plus from all good bookstores.

I was delighted in December to read this super write up too, in the industry magazine that goes via wholesaler to booksellers.

"A title that many of your customers will be all too ready for (and me too if I keep scoffing the hummus) the in the New Year is Till the Fat Lady SlimsbyDebbie Flint(£7.99, pb, 978 178189333 3). I appreciate that there are an absolute deluge of diet titles competing for your bookshelves; but the USP of this one is that previously self-published this semi-autobiographical weight-loss and lifestyle book on Kindle with much success, and this new paperback edition includes many testimonials from her fans – the author is a very successful presenter on QVC. In 1998 Debbie found herself more than two stone overweight, under stress and in need of help. Enter Freedom Eating. This natural weight loss method helped Debbie break free from Food Prison and un-learn all the bad habits from a lifetime of 'starting again on Monday'. Till the Fat Lady Slimscontains some painful secrets which many readers will find familiar. The book also includes material covering the dangers of sugar, information on how to use Debbie's method alongside traditional dieting and endorsements from successful slimmers. “Debbie Flint’s honest account of what she went through will hit home to every yo-yo dieter out there. Life-changing and well-worth reading. Till the Fat Lady Slims is in my view absolutely BRILLIANT!” It’s published (rather ironically, I feel) by Choc Lit in January."

NSV’s - Non-Scales Victories Special – TTFLS Strikes Again

It’s been heart-warming to read this week about so many people’s success stories. With my semi-autobiographical weight loss books, one of the principles is not to be ruled by the scales. Weight isn’t such a driving factor and we try to measure successes in other ways – be it belt notches or compliments or movements being easier etc.

So here is a little focus on some of those ‘non-scales-victories’ as we call them. The NSVs were coming through thick and fast this week on our Facebook group of the same name as the books.

In Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ diet, available on Amazon here in ebook or paperback, we set out six principles for breaking free from food prison and learning to eat like a slim person. This includes how to use the Freedom Eating system alongside any traditional diet – ANY – because it’s not about what you eat so much as WHEN you eat. Plus you can read a slightly abridged version of the original book 1.0 included within it, my own story.

In Till the Fat Lady Slims 3.0 – Tips and Tales to Inspire, available here on amazon, I’ve summarised the main points and added several extra sections bringing it up to date to incorporate my latest take on how the gut bacteria play such an important role in our behaviour around food and how our mental state can affect our diet choices with a look at the Inner Chimp. Plus I’ve identified what I believe to be a first – six different guises of Freedom Eater, how different people use Freedom Eating and the principles of TTFLS to transform their relationship with food. Identifying what type of guise you are has helped a lot of ladies understand themselves and seek comfort in knowing they are not alone as there are many others the same as them on our lovely support system.

Also within book 3.0 there are over 90 Tips and Tales to inspire, covering a lot of the topics that come up regularly from my lovely members on Facebook. You can join the group here. More tips like them can be seen on the sister Facebook PAGE which anyone can see here.

I also have a separate event page called 20lb in 2016 challenge - a year-long umbrella event page

It’s been a fascinating journey for me. I originally used to be a binge-diet-binge crazy woman, driving myself and everyone around me completely mad over my food rules. Learned rules which never really worked long term. Dieting just didn’t work for me – if someone told me ‘you can’t’ then I wanted to, whatever it was, even if I didn’t want it beforehand. Ironically when I discovered Freedom Eating, it meant telling myself that I could have whatever I wanted as long as I waited till I was hungry enough, when I should give it my full attention, then stop at satisfied. And observe afterwards the effects on my body in order to learn and move on and let go. My initial revelation was ‘you mean I stop at satisfied, not when I can’t breathe any more?!’ My family was one which filled their plates to mountainous proportions and ended up congratulating each other after force-feeding ourselves the whole lot, regardless of our body’s needs. ‘Haven’t you done well,’ my wartime-rationing-affected nan would say to my mum, as they sat bloated after Sunday dinner including pie and custard for ‘afters.’

Now I look back with fondness and dismay at the social conditioning which created this warped way of being around food. Sweets were given as reward, as love, as consolation. And as I grew I got ever further away from the natural way to use food as simple fuel – food was used to combat loneliness, happiness, anger, and every emotion in between. Being the eldest of five I had a scramble to get my ‘share’ when every Thursday (mum and dad got paid on a Thursday) the supermarket goodies would arrive – cakes in boxes of five which in a family of seven meant if you didn’t get yours now you didn’t get it at all. All sorts of other food foibles and weird connections are recounted in TTFLS 2.0 as my own story tumbles out of the pages – like some sort of therapy for me – were my food binges really that bad? And like a recognition of a kindred spirit for those who read my tale – ‘it was like you were writing about me’ people have told me.

Nowadays I devour all the information I can since I know I’m an ‘Elaine’ guise of Freedom Eater and I do full freedom eating rather than being like a ‘Linda’ – who combines TTFLS with a traditional diet or diet club. And for me, information makes principle six, observe, come into its own. It’s led me to realising that to listen to your body properly, you have to get off sugar addiction. So that’s part of the journey to make your way along the highway towards freedom by shaking off the chains that bind you forever to the weight loss-weight gain spiral. Plus we talk about the wayside – veering off course along the wayside is part of the process – just don’t set up camp there.

Here are a selection of the most recent fabulous NSV’s from my lovely gang online. And if you have one you’d like to contribute, just email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. I’d love to hear about it.

Best wishes

It's working!!!! FE, LS and BB. Did my work pants up this morning without having to breathe in!! Big NSV smile on my face x

Quitting sugar alongside the new habit of taking stock, reviewing, finding the lesson to be learnt and continuing in Freedom Eating meant I held on to my new self esteem and respect. I felt no need to self punish and was free of the nasty insidious thoughts that prevailed pre ttfls. The control was real, not the façade of starvation or binging. My mind remained calm free of scale induced panic. Food remained the daily pleasure it should be. All that was needed was an adjustment to recognise level 6 hunger as separate from exhaustion. My learning curves are lessening my curves for ever!

Just got back from another medical appointment, with good news. I've lost another couple of pounds! Making 35 pounds down so far. And NSV in the bath last night - I usually hold back the water behind me like a dam, but it all drained AROUND me last night!!!

Sara B

I've had a NSV or two today. Went to sell some jeans in eBay that are too large. Was convinced they were a 22 but no when I went to check the label they were a 20. Then after gardening I pulled on an old but clean pair of jeggings that is not worn in ages and they were too big.

Patricia

Walked for 1/2 hour to our Social Club which is roughly 1 mile away keeping a steady pace with my family, chatting all the way and not out of breath. Burger hotdogs and chips were being giving out at the club but I didn't want any of it and just drank water all night

Lesley y

now bear with me - because of rain last night we decided not to car boot today, and of course its beautiful so okay.
Washing machine not working - I get paranoid about the laundry - and loo blocked. Blocked loo has caused massive bathroom flood which is cascading into our loung and kitchen in a pretty vigourous way.
Went to shop for cat food. Didn't actually notice the chocolate as it simply wasn't an issue. Fancied a beer, fleetingly, I like Coors and it was on offer, but didn't bother.
Something has changed in me, it really has.

Well done all! Am so proud of my gang!

BECAUSE I'M WORTH IT

Lovely Wendy C on my Till the Fat Lady Slims group on Facebook (do join it here) has been summing up in a nutshell the importance of breaking through that self-esteem barrier. Prof Steve Peters (see recent blog) told me on Skype this week that low self-esteem is intrinsically linked with the likelihood of being overweight and overeating. It's a vicious spiral obviously, as feeling worthless makes it more likely you'll not care enough about your own appearance and health, feeling down and comfort eating. So seeing Wendy post this, this week, was heart-warming as she's taking those all-important baby steps towards becoming a true Freedom Eater. We see other ladies talking about taking pride in their clothes which they've never done before, or finally buying and using makeup for the first time, or even not minding being in photos. So always remember when you automatically go to settle for second best, don't. Take first best - you're worth it.

WENDY says - Definitely feeling the FE vibe, learning to listen to my body. I wasn't hungry when I got up so just had my water and lemon first thing. Actually walked to my Dr's appointment instead of driving like I normally would have (bonus did not have the usual hassle of finding a parking space) by now my stomach was beginning to make it known it needs food, so I sat there waiting to be called wondering what to eat when I got home. I really fancied melon so I called in the shop on my walk home and treated myself. Yes I did say treated, in the past I wouldn't have spent £2 on melon and £2 on raspberries just for me, but do you know what, I have realised I am worth it! Besides I wouldn't have thought twice about buying chocolate in the past would I? (All this was going through my mind walking home lol)
Anyway that was my breakfast and I thoroughly enjoyed it

THE BIG OMEGA THREE TIDAL WAVE

OMG there are so many reasons to have omega three in your diet. I just got back from a super talk with Dr Alex Richardson, the UK eminent expert on the topic, in Bristol. Lovely Eileen Davies came with me and it was very enlightening. Too much to go into here but I managed to get a fairly long video of one section of the talk, explaining info for vegetarians, those with depression, and why we need it from fish.

SLEEP IS SO IMPORTANT FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Here's a summary of why and there's tons more online. If you've ever felt rubbish due to lack of sleep and ended up making unwise food choices it could be due to your inner chimp playing up (see last week's part one blog). The chimp needs to sleep. (The Chimp Paradox book by Prof Steve Peters, and my interview with him in archives below left.) If you've had a jippy belly or constipation after lack of sleep, it could be due to your gut bacteria being affected by it, as the microbes are upset and don't work as well (Brainmaker, by Dr David Perlmutter.) If you are stressed, that in turn affects the hormones, the gut bacteria and the chimp. Sleep is vital so one of the key guidelines for part two this week is - get more sleep.

Note that the wrong foods will make sleeping worse - do read Aids to Cutting back Sugar blog

, plus here's the latest concise talk from Prof Robert Lustig, the world's guru on the topic. So worth watching if you know you get hyper with too much sugar - particularly watch 17 minutes in, if you've ever wondered why you can't give up easily.

Can I also ask if you need any jog in the right direction, to check out That Sugar Film (watch it before they remove it from this link or buy it)? It's a stark proof that low fat foods are not the answer and for those whose weight loss has stalled or who just can't seem to get past a certain point, it's a bible. You'll be shocked. Particularly look 20 minutes in if you have lots of fruit or muesli or smoothies or cereal or juice eg at breakfast time.

STEP 2. TIPS

Last week we looked at the Freedom Eating basics. Am assuming you've begun to read the Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 and 3.0 books (here on amazon - paperback or ebook - with a free 'look inside' that states the main principles.) So this week, what happens to people when they get stuck in, and what has helped make a true turning point happen? this is Wendy's take on it -

WENDY SAYS -

After promising myself to think what does my body need instead of what do I want, I was a bit nervous when hubby suggested stopping at a food market when we were out earlier.
However I am proud to say, I turned down, numerous cakes, pasties, sausage rolls, fudge and burgers. I told hubby to feel free to have what he wanted but rather sulkily he walked away with nothing too, lol. (He will get over it)
You see in the past we would probably have had a taste of most things on offer hence we both have a weight problem.
Driving home I knew I had put a casserole in the slow cooker for tonight's meal but I did feel peckish so when I got home I had what I felt I needed - a small slice of bread, marmite, tomato and cucumber (got a craving for cucumber at the moment).
I love this feeling."

So I asked her what was the turning point?

"That's hard to answer Debbie, perseverance I guess. After 40 years of yo-yo dieting and being bigger than I had ever been its plain that conventional diets don't work for me, not long term anyway.
I won't lie, I had several attempts at freedom eating
before I finally 'got it'.
I find it hard to stop at satisfied if I am really enjoying what I'm eating, so I using a smaller plate works better for me. Also thinking about the fistful of food thing has helped. I always piled my plate high and would scoff the lot then be too full to move, lol. Now I have less in the knowledge that if I'm not satisfied I can always have more but nine times out of ten I don't need it.
Eg I used to follow a diet where I was allowed as much meat, eggs, pasta, rice, potatoes and veg as I could eat, so would pile that plate with bacon, egg, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes etc for breakfast. Since freedom eating I have discovered I don't really like the texture of meat so I'm happier with just an egg on toast and I feel much more alert too. Not to mention happy and in control.
Not to mention all the support I get from you Debbie and all the other lovely people on this page. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me find my life again."

How great is that?

Wendy needed to take baby steps but others got it straight away. There are different types of Freedom Eaters (see 'guises' listed in book 3.0). Which are you?

1. Consider your preferences for losing weight - can you stick to a diet? No? Do full freedom eating. If you can, do the 'When' diet (book 2.0) The principles are listed for free at the start of the book, viewable in the 'look inside' on amazon - do go see if you're new. But get used to the whole listening to your body thing. The Vagus nerve is connected to the brain and extends to the gut. It's the source of why we get a 'gut feeling' and why I believe it works to 'touch in with your gut' when it's time to choose what to eat. Do what Wendy does - really give yourself permission to go for what your body wants, not what the clock says or the family need. Use pacing, as I said previously, to ensure you can get the timing right. And explore the ways others use Freedom eating by joining the TTFLS facebook group here, and get advice for your particular concerns. It really works to share.

2. Make sure you have enough sleep. This is a key one for this week. No matter what else you do this week, give yourself the full permission to treat yourself to some proper hours in bed. Don't stay up late, just to get alone time, you're alone when you're asleep in bed once you go off to dreamland!

DAILY TO DO'S

1. Have a think about taking some probiotics to help your gut bacteria - there are lots on offer either in foods, like fermented foods, or in capsule form - google it to get some proper info or check out my previous blogs in archives on this page. I take 'mightidophilus 12' every day, plus a miso soup ( I use the cup a soup pastes if it needs to be instant) plus some home made kefir, plus a glass of water with a spoonful of apple cider vinegar, more on that here, plus a glass of my fave Barleans Greens which contains fab pro and pre biotics. Sauerkraut is often added to my plate as I llike it - there's other fermented options you can choose to get good probiotics into your belly tho, depending upon your choices.

2. Try drinking more water (which ever water is best for you just watch squashes and cordials for too much sugar or artificial sweeteners which are not great for the palate.) Ideally a glass of hot water with a splash of fresh lemon juice will be great to start the day - you'll be in good company - apparently Jennifer Anniston does it too!

3. PLEASE UP YOUR VEGETABLES if you possibly can. They are prebiotics (if the probiotics are seeds, then the prebiotics are the fertiliser and the good soil.) There are some which are even better than others, like asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, onions ... but google them and get used to eating them gradually if your tummy doesn't like them. And if you are a Katie or Anita type of Freedom Eating Guise (book 3.0) then you might need to adjust it according to your own medical recommendations. BUT investigate - many conditions can be aided with enough green and fibrous vegetables. Please get enough into your body.

4. If meals are smaller, and more frequent, that's fine. Who says it's not? Old rules from childhood? If you're a grown up in charge of your own mouth now, why not venture onto this whole new world - how exciting!

MOOD HUNGRY THIRSTY BORED GUT...  And what is the real REASON for your hunger? if you can wait till 6 on the hunger scale, everything falls into place. Food won't help you if you're bored. Or lonely. As Lesley one of our members says  - I could be an unhappy big fat bird who eats tons or I could be a slowly reducing less unhappy less fat bird who listens to her body and isn't controlled by food anymore.

More on this next time.

Full resources list is on part one.

Published in Back to You

Welcome to the Programme that could change your behaviour around food forever. Seriously?

Is she kidding? Nope.

It did mine, way back in 1999, more than 16 years ago and whilst I'm not promising a super skinny you by the end of the one month, if you follow these guidelines and the step by step programme I'm going to lay out over the next four weeks, the rest of your life could be lived outside of food prison. Or at least it can provide food for thought about why your diets keep failing.

I'm going to give you a little background, then launch into the first few baby steps you can take towards adopting the basics of Freedom Eating using the Super Six Principles. They will help you unlearn the sabotaging habits and put in place new ones - the habits of slim people. All this system does is to reconnect us with our natural birth right to use food for fuel - no more, no less - not for comfort, not for reward, not to cover up other feelings, nothing. Just fuel.

Not everyone will end up skinny, that's not the aim. Freedom is the aim. And once people master Freedom Eating they start discovering things like Freedom shopping, Freedom family relationships and eventually Freedom Living.

I'd like you to read this introduction then get a big cup of tea or whatever, and give yourself the precious treat of some me-time because you deserve it, so that you can quietly digest what this programme is all about.

So first will come the introduction.

Then I will break it down into bite sized chunks in a step by step guide which you can pick up any time you like - latecomers can begin in your own time too - and gradually work your way through.

PREPARE

The three preparation blogs before this one are worth a read -

-          Pre-programme PREPARATION blog – click here.

-          Two weeks to go PREPARATION blog – click here.

-          One week to go PREPARATION blog – click here. THIS INCLUDES THE FULL RUN DOWN OF HOW TO PREPARE - please read this first.

Assuming you've worked your way through the prep, it's time to acquaint yourself with the six principles. I need newcomers to go to the FREE 'look inside' on amazon to read the first chapter of Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 - the 'When' diet. - click here and please feel free to continue reading (kindle ebook - read on app or kindle or computer) in order to fully understand my own story.

Those who are up to speed know that Till the Fat Lady Slims 3.0 - tips and tales to inspire - was released in January. This features success stories and yet more science behind why you can trust your body to know what is best for it. Crucially you will find out about which GUISE OF FREEDOM EATER you are - which will become important as we go through this programme. If you want, order the paperback so you can dip in and out of it and begin to get the idea of how it's helped others and what to do in certain situations.

I'm not going to reproduce here all of what's in the beginning of book 2.0, since you can read it for free on amazon as above. It covers the basic principles, the way you can use it with any traditional diet - ANY - and extra research which brought my 2002 Freedom Eating original, bang up to date in 2014. So click here to read it through if you would please.

Or don't. You have to do what's right for you. If you find yourself thinking 'I'll go back to it later' then there's a cheats guide here. Just flick through - it won't be for everybody. Some - a few - will think 'what's all the fuss about, it's just common sense'; if you do, then thank you for taking an interest but this system is not for you. Others will think it's amazing, groundbreaking and like nothing they've ever tried before.

ONCE YOU'VE READ IT -

Chimp update See also the separate blog featuring the Skype chat I had this week. I interviewed the wonderful Prof Steve Peters, author of the Chimp Paradox, and inspiration for the Inner Chimp section in book 3.0. He told me some amazing things about how our Inner Chimp works during times of stress and in particular during attempts at weight loss. He told me something fascinating which helps to explain why my Facebook support group Till the Fat Lady Slims has been doing so well. He said that it’s vital that everyone has someone to confide in. Do you? One thing I noticed is how many of our members on my TTFLS group talk about needing to share and open up in a way they obviously don’t outside of the group in their real lives. That’s an interesting notion isn’t it, that my support group is helping to breed success where previously people had failed. Obviously why some slimming groups work for some people too, but by no means all. More about this on my b2u Steve Peters blog here.

FREEDOM EATING PROGRAMME - INTRODUCTION

I asked a couple of our ladies what their top tips are for those needing baby steps to adopt Freedom Eating as a diet-cracking/busting code. They said -

'1) forget everything you learned about 'diets'

2) trust in freedom eating, your body will eventually let you know what you need (it may not happen straight away with everyone, I had a couple of false starts)

3) keep hydrated, quite often it's thirst not hunger

I accept that my own journey is going to take time and it has changed not only my eating habits but my whole outlook on life. I know that sounds extreme but it's true.'

Wendy C

and from Pamela G -

'1) simply - don't eat if you are not hungry 2) experiment - different things work on different days 3) don't listen to anyone but yourself . Just have to listen to my own advice now.'

Now i know it's ironic that you're following someone else's instructions using this very programme But the gist of it is to put you back in charge of your own body and LISTEN TO ITS SIGNALS.

So here is the first step -

STEP 1.

Three things make Freedom Eating truly work - if you do them you can say you are Freedom Eating. If not, you're still on your way there.

I'd like you to consider how to get these into your life today - not tomorrow, and not after you've finished the cupboards to 'start again tomorrow'.

1. Can you wait till you are truly at 6 (out of ten) on the hunger scale (how to tell is listed in detail in book 2.0) If you can do this one as well, that's great. Otherwise make sure you do the next step - this is the most vital of all -

2. Can you stop at Satisfied - NOT FULL (hunger shouts but satisfaction whispers and one of the keys to losing weight is to not over fill your body at one sitting. Full info on how to detect the signals is in book 2.0. BUT it's about a fist full of food. Please note, you can keep the rest till later - it's actually ESSENTIAL that you allow yourself to stop at satisfied and keep the rest till later so you banish any thoughts of 'wasting' it.)

3. Can you observe afterwards - don't be a judge. If you decide you want to eat a bag of crisps 'cos that's what you think your body really wants, it's OK to do so. If a slim person had a cake at someone's birthday they would probably eat less later. Typical dieters would eat tons more since they've 'broken the diet' and they need to 'make it worth it' before they 'start again tomorrow'. This terminology is not used within Freedom Eating. Starting again tomorrow is not an option, just let it go, allow yourself to observe and learn and make better choices - the next meal time. By not beating yourself up afterwards you may find you don't repeat the patterns of a lifetime and binge until tomorrow. (See below if you are a on a traditional diet too)

Now there's a lot more to it than that - and if you skipped reading it when I asked you to above, you can do so now if you like - you'll be able to read it al in the FREE 'look inside' of book 2.0 on amazon. The full summary of the supersix principles is at the start of the book, so you don't have to pay a penny to join in with this programme. BUT if you can't wait to find out more, go full steam ahead and read both books. It's up to you - you're the one in charge.

BABY STEPS VERSION - study your body when you eat. What does it feel like as you eat? Can you spot a moment where you take a deep breath, meaning your body is full now? Could you possibly stop at that point? it might be half of what you normally eat - that's fine - you can go back to it later when you're properly hungry once more. Satisfied is not FULL. It's not being able to feel the food in your stomach. it's having a wave of happiness 'cos your body's got what it needs. Try doing that for each meal - you can always binge again tomorrow. (I'm only half joking - sometimes just by saying you 'can' means you don't want to.)

DIETERS VERSION - again see if you can do it and stop at satisfied - why 'fill up' on vegetables. Do realise that the feeling of hunger is valuable to the body, it's not to be feared. But do not get too hungry - being starving is not a natural state, and if you can wait till 6 on the hunger scale but then eat properly that's the best way, as far as Freedom Eating is concerned. Choose from within your diet plan, but stop at satisfied.

TIPS -

-  do nothing else whilst you eat - NOTHING - don't watch TV, don't read, don't talk, don't drive, don't watch a movie, don't even listen to the radio. Give the food your entire attention.

-  a deep breath often indicates satisfied

-  please drink a whole glass of water half an hour before your meal. One of our tips is to make sure it's true hunger and not thirst, then you can truly tell what your body really wants.

- but if your body is demanding sugar, that's ok, it just means you are addicted. And you need to get off it whatever way works for you - using a programme like I Quit Sugar, or alternatively by educating your way out of it like I did - see below.

- PARADOX - know that if you really really have to eat chocolate, with Freedom Eating, it's ok to do so - as long as you eat between hungry and satisfied and give it your full attention.

DAILY TO-DOs - edition 1.

I'm going to suggest some reading and a video each day, plus a reminder of two things I'd like you to consider in order to work your way towards full Freedom Eating.

- please watch this 14 minute video about sugar from CNN's sixty minutes - 'is sugar toxic' on youtube. It's utterly fascinating. If you liked it, grab the chance to watch the whole of this one too - That Sugar Film - it's legendary but they usually delete it off youtube, so if it's still working on this link, please watch it urgently! click here for That Sugar Film or buy it - it's fab. People report that it's the biggest eye opener as to how to adjust the diet to reduce sugar.

- please peruse this blog too - tons more to watch and read - Aids to Cutting Back Sugar.

- please consider this - your gut loves healthy food and destroying the balance of gut bacteria eg if you've taken antibiotics or have a lot of bad food each day, might lead to health problems. Can you consider watching this - Gut Reaction parts 1& 2 on youtube.

- want even more info? Then go to my TTFLs tab on my website - use the codes inside your book 2.0 to access a special exclusive section too.

RULE 1 - TAKE FROM THIS WHATEVER FEELS RIGHT FOR YOU - you are the one who knows what's best for you - if you get out  of your body's way, just try it. But above all, try to give the food your full attention and do nothing else when you eat. Break the bad habits and it can start right here.

Countdown to one month Freedom Eating programme

Not long to go now! Have you been helping your body help itself by cutting back on sugar? if not, why not start doing so, as opposed to stuffing as much as you can before the 'diet' begins? Because if that's what you've been doing, you're only punishing yourself! Isn't it time to try breaking free?

Freedom Eating for those who don't know, is the lifestyle system of listening to your body and reclaiming your birthright to be slim. I know it sounds cliched but it's totally true - in my books, Freedom Eating will help you unlearn all the social conditioning that resulted in your current antipathy towards dieting, addiction to sugar and pattern of putting on more weight every single time you diet. For those who want to know more, click on the links below and read the reviews, and the feedback on facebook groups and pages too. Or read the books!

I'm planning a week by week programme guiding newcomers through what to do , step by step, if you love to be led. it will begin the end of March after Easter. If you're going to have sugar, at least do it the freedom eating way.

Anatomy of a Binge.

This was one of the most controversial chapters in my original book, reproduced in full in Book 2.0. In it, I list all the foods I ate in one 12 hour period - some people would never believe it. Yet others amongst you would say 'is that all?' Read it and see how you compare, if you've ever been - or still are - a binger. It's quite scary really, because getting to satisfied then saving the rest till later is one of the most liberating experiences ever. And it only took me 37 years to discover it. Yes I grew up amongst a family where nanny would sit forcing the rest of her dinner down her, and was from the generation who told each other 'you've done well' if they finished a heaped plate. Mum did some of that too. So it was a total relief to find out it wasn't how we were evolved to be. Stopping at satisfied is about a fistful of food each time - but wait a few hours and you'll be hungry enough again (6 on the hunger scale) to have the rest. There's no 'you can't' only 'listen to your body.' And that's why this system worked for me and so many others, and works where others fail. Because it proves we are human.

Guises of Freedom Eater

Another innovation is acknowledging that there's no one-size fits all. In Book 3.0 (2016) I identify six types of Freedom Eater - many of whom were inspired by the posts I was reading over the last two years on Facebook group 'till the Fat Lady Slims' (come join us). Which will you be? Do let me know.

Preparing for the One Month Freedom Eating Programme

Previous blogs have helped by indicating how gut bacteria may be helping to create problems in your attempts at dieting - do use the archive below left, and catch up. Then do kindly read through at least parts one and two of Book 2.0. If you'd like a teaser before you buy, remember amazon do a free 'look inside'.

Also you can go back over 155 Tips of the Day on the Facebook PAGE - public access. And join me on mmy '20lb in 2016 event page on Facebook if you'd like to be counted and register your intent to take part  just by clicking 'going' here.

Other news –

-          Is fermented food a recipe for good gut health ?

The answer is yes! Even the BBC is spreading the word. Yay. Lots of basic info in this article for those who are curious. And don't forget the best thing to do is to listen to your own body as it will tell you what is the most effective. Look at your own ceases and follow the Bristol scale of what looks like A perfect poo. But do you start getting some of this stuff into your body. They should have also mentioned about what not to eat though because nothing will overcome a diet rich in sugars and processed rubbish or someone taking antibiotics over and over again and wondering why they has a dodgy tummy. Good info here thank you Garry X

-          8 anti-inflammatory ingredients to eat now

Another interesting take on why omega three is good for you. It's listed in these ingredients and lovely Joe tells us why :-) anyone tried any recipes with the other things he mentions in detail on this article? X

-          Drinking water could aid weight loss

On average, people who drank between one and three cups of water more than usual consumed 5-18 grams less sugar and decreased their cholesterol consumption by 7-21 grams daily.

Researchers said that it didn't matter whether the water consumed was through a drinking fountain, tap or bottle. It all had the same impact.

Have a great week!

Do look back through the archives if you’d like to see some of the weekly ‘Monday Essay’s I wrote when Back to You first began. From Omega 3 to Miso soup to Shitake Mushrooms to meditation, the topics are many and varied and help get to grips with some of the current scientific thinking about health.

The book launch party was fab! There's a way of seeing videos and pics, if you go to my Facebook page - click here. The Chiswick Bookshop was wonderful and very welcoming, warm and accommodating. David Crane the owner and his lovely daughter Emily, the manager gave everyone a really good night. And many books were bought. I was extremely tired at the end though, but so proud of myself. Special thanks as usual to lovely mate Sharon who was chief helper plus my family, friends and facebookers. Super day. Will be a while before I do it again though!! Hehe.

Book of the Week - Garrison's Creed by Cristin Harber - get it here on Amazon.

Shaping up to be much better than the first one in the Titan series, this is set ten years later where the two star-crossed lovers encounter each other again - in an action packed adventure. The narration doesn't dip out quite so much with downward inflexions at the end of every sentence like book one had, either. So that's good. It's quite highly reviewed online so do give it a go if you like fiery characters and hot heroes!

THE BIG SHORT

You know when I went away from QVC? Well I worked for several years in the health food industry – bottled energised water, omega threes. Then I hopped over to work as a manager in the financial industry, (my background was accounting and finance before media) and with my impeccable timing, I did so JUST as the financial crisis was looming. Three redundancies later and I was training myself to be an operations manager but the first job I got for a company who wanted my professional PRINCE 2 qualification, was as a manager at a shopping channel (Bid, now defunct too) and they had me back on air by Xmas. So I was well-placed when QVC came calling the following summer. Anyway – that’s the short version of my 9 years away from QVC.

In the middle of it, the unprecedented fall from grace of the banks happened, and I was on the inside looking out, watching more and more people get laid off all around me, scrabbling to get my team’s mortgage applications through before the deadlines closed with guillotine-efficiency, hoping our sub-prime mortgage customers made it through before it was too late. By summer 2008, it was too late for most of them and mortgage lending ground to a halt. Worldwide.

Well a small group of people spotted that the bubble was going to burst and bet that it would happen – in a form of insurance bet called a ‘big short.’ And this week, I went to see the film that’s taken this long to be released.

WATCH – the BEST BEST film I’ve seen in ages – The Big Short! OMG it was so good I already want to see it again. Ace performances from Steve Carell, Christian Bale (Oscar winning if ever there was, from both), Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, and one of my faves, Rafe Spall, memorable and funny as ever also starred. And really really clever fast-paced directing which intersperses snippets of life in the mid-2000s as the housing crisis exploded and the world changed forever. Loved it. Of course, I worked in the financial industry for a few years and was in the middle of the crash, so it was especially poignant to me. 9 and a quarter out of ten – one of the highest ever.

It's one of those rare films that just make me want to rave about it and urge you to go see it!

Here’s the link to the trailer – do feel free to let me know if you have a big crash story of your own!

And here’s a brilliant interview with cast and creators – so interesting! Enjoy. Let me know if you see it, just click ‘reply.’

Book Launch Party – so here’s the invite to my official book launch party – can you come? It’s at the Chiswick Bookshop (that’s what it’s called) at 12, Turnham Green Terrace, W41QP, tel 0208 9948020 if you have questions about the venue. It’s a lovely little bookshop to peruse whilst you wait for things to begin! Or come help me with the twiglets… lol.

Come along on Thursday 4th  between 5 and 7.30 – for a reading, a signing and some wine and nibbles! I’d love to see you there? Just reply to this email and tell me if you can. OR GO TO THE FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE AND CLICK 'GOING' - HERE.

My lovely steamy Choc Lit romance ‘Take a Chance on Me’ will be on offer in a signed paperback and there’ll also be a preview of my BRAND NEW ttfls book - a follow up to my semi-autobiographical weight loss book. The new one is called  Till the Fat Lady Slims – version 3.0 Tips and Tales to Inspire. (Here’s version 2.0 on Amazon now if you haven’t got it yet.) Dawn Allen, the lady who lost six and a half stone in a year and says Freedom Eating changed her life, will be at the launch party as well as lots of other QVC faces, including Catherine, Alison Keenan, Craig and Gill Gauntlett and I’d love to hear from you if you can come too? Email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

(STOP PRESS - HOW TO ORDER A SIGNED COPY OVER THE PHONE! Just call Emily at the Chiswick Bookshop and she will help make it happen. 0208 994 8020)

Of course I'll be donating the profits to my lovely charity Medical Detection Dogs. And Christina from MDD will also be there on the night. Talking of MDD :

Star struck I was kinda star struck, a bit, to this week be tweeted by Deborah Meaden from Dragon’s Den herself! She’d just been to the Medical Detection Dogs HQ – and was so impressed. I only hope they can raise the funds they need soon enough to help train another dog to do the prostate cancer detection work that impressed Deborah so much. I you can spare a fiver or so towards it, click here.

Here’s the tweet – squeee!

Finally – a cheeky sneaky puppy video which made me smile. I know I should have rushed over sooner to help Daisy out of her predicament, after wrapping herself up in her microfibre towel a bit toooo well… but… well watch it and you’ll see why… And no she wasn’t unhappy about it – watch her reaction!

Anyway – this week’s Read it Write it Sell it book blog (click here) has the John Grisham novel ‘Gray Mountain’ which I’m enjoying, as the Book of the Week this week. And more about the fab book launch party I’m having.

And Back to You blog (click here) is all about why some people can lose weight eating certain foods and some people can’t; and the relationshiop between that and... yes you've guessed it, gut bacteria - the mot du jour! Plus the links to the Yankee candle Q&A with lovely guest Rosa, plus as usual Bruce’s fab Bodyblade Q&A.

Finally don’t forget my new QVC blog, out Friday 29th, will have a big competition – someone will be picked at random to win none other than a QVC Beauty Bash Goodie Bag! All you need to do is leave a comment on that blog and you’ll be entered – but it has to be on the blog itself. You'll also read all about the fab The Trouble with Goats and Sheep book launch party I attended for my author friend Joanna Cannon last night too!

(Alternatively if you’re really quick the odds may be better in the Friday Webchat competition which I will have on our QVC Facebook page during my final webchat of this run – I’m letting someone else take over. Go here to our QVC Facebook page and look for the post which goes live Friday lunchtime - ENTER BEFORE 7PM.)

Good luck if you take part in the big new Beauty Bash Goodie Bag Competition! And maybe I'll see you on Thursday next week in The Chiswick Bookshop?

This week my book of the week is a smashing book i've been listening to on audible, by a lovely lady called Beryl Kingston. I met Beryl out in France inJune and she's a very prolific author who writes about "the old days up north!"

"Off the rails" is a super story of rags to riches and love and vengeance. I am really enjoying the atmospheric settings, the use of the vernacular, and the emotions she evokes in her story about a lad who was cast out by his family and went on to make it good, and the woman he left behind.

You can get it from Amazon, it's not a new one but if you like it she has written so many, it would be good to get into her library.

Till the fat lady slims

What a fabulous success this was when I did a freebie of the e-book over the weekend. It stayed at number one in the kindle chart in the UK for diets and weight loss, for most of the weekend, and around 1500 were downloaded. I seriously hope it helps a lot of people. I have just decided to donate all my proceeds from my QVCversion which I did on air on QVC UK in January, which sold out completely. (Itwas a hardback with extra content.) to my charity, medical detection dogs. Theyhave been in the news a lot lately, have you seen it? Anyway here is the link if you want to read some of the reviews of TTFLS 2.0. And here is one lady's comment now she has lost a lot of weight and just recently started being stricter with her principles of freedom eating, as explained in my book.

Have a lovely week

Best wishes
