Debbie Flint

it's been another week off for me down in Devon. Next week it's back to welcoming lots of guests here again, but this week it was all about Christmasssss!

Bought lots of pressies and as usual, I laid them all out in my back room before wrapping them up ready to take back to London around 20th. It's a good job that a) I live alone and b) noone was here writing this week!

But it'll all be ok once they've all gone... and it's a good job I can close the door on that room next week once everyone arrives!! hehe!

Meanwhile, the decorations are up - here's an example - I'm sure it's going to feel very welcoming when you walk through the door. The tree is in the hallway - it's really the only place it can go, even though it's a big house. And I was very glad to discover a little place not far away that did a seven foot tree for just £36. I love having a real tree - do you?

Another thing I did was find enough batteries for the lights and hanging baskets, garlands, candles and so on. Happily, I stumbled across last year's box where I'd decanted all the old ones and some still worked! Oh the simple joys. Plus the alkaline battery re-charger - delight! But there are several pressies still to buy..

Secret Santa Surprises?

So we have a long list of lovely people who have helped this year, helped to make our lives more enjoyable and our jobs easier. Both at the retreat in Devon and at QVC, my 'proper job' (as they say in the South West!) Plus I'm having a little 'ladies' lunch' featuring a Secret Santa, on 19th in Sheepwash, then our annual presenters' lunch on the Thursday. So it's time to consider what to get for all these little treats - some secret santas and pressies - with a budget of between £5 and £10. From little yankee candles to the mini version of the super board game 'Articulate', there were lots of options. In the end we went with a bottle bag, and a little bottle of fizz, together with a surprise at the bottom of the bag - can you guess what it is? Answer at the bottom! total cost just a fiver! Fingers crossed they all like them - looking forward to seeing their faces!

Book of the Week

Ohhhhh I love my regular authors when they bring out the next book in a series! So it's time for me to dip into the Pillars of the Earth sequel, from Ken Follett - book 3, Columns of Fire. Set in the 1500s, at the time of the Spanish Inquisition, it's full of the usual pithy detail about life in those times and as normal, the narrator adds a touch of authenticity with his inflections even if it's a little affected sometimes. Enjoying it very much. More here.

Facebook Vlog of the Week

Well most of the days were rather dull, weather-wise, but happily it was ok enough to take the dogs for a nice walk. Gracie can't go too far nowadays cos of her hip dysplasia but they love to get out. Here's a vlog from one of my daily walks in Devon which so many facebookers seem to love so much! Do follow the Facebook page and 'like' it to get the regular updates automatically!

QVC BLOG - this week's on Friday will feature an early bird link for Sunday's big Amazon Echo Today's Special Value as well as lots of other sneaky peeks, and a reminder of one of the funniest bloopers EVER! Made me laugh for days on end... poor Mally didn't know what hit her! Go here to see it on Friday from around lunchtime...  Or visit my Twitter page where it is still the pinned post!

FINALLY - are you near Kingston this Saturday (9th)? Can you come to the Good Grief Trust gig? More info here - come hear me sing a few vintage songs, amongst other things - should be fun.  go here to find out more!!

Hope you have a lovely week!

Dontcha just love it when you get a chance to involve your kids in something to do with work? They don't, mind you - not always anyway! But since these pics were public, they didn't mind. Taken at Lolly's wedding, they are on a customizable case for the new Amazon Fire 10 inch tablet TSV from Amazon, which I'll be launching Fri night on QVC (1st Dec midnight) with my lovely telly hubby Lee Hohbein. (go here where it will appear from Midnight!)

I get warm fuzzies every time I look at those pics, and am very proud of my kids. And their partners, of course! As I say in my new QVC blog, just out (here) , it's only six weeks or so till Kari, my son's wife, has her bubba and I become a nanny! And this is the only place I will be sharing pics of baby on a regular basis, updates etc. As I don't want her / him to become a social media 'thing' - and neither does son, or his wife. So stay where you are for the occasional update!

I don't, however, want to become one of those who posts about grandchildren over and over and nothing else... but if you know me, as many of you do by now, I'm sure you'll already know that that's not likely, considering what else I post about!

Moving out todayyy...ayyy...ayyy!

Remember that Carol Bayer Sager song? Loved it, way back when. Well I might have had a few house moves in the last few years, but my son and his wife take the biscuit! They have moved no less than SIX times in the last six years!! I'm now in what I hope will be my long term home, in Devon (unless something extraordinary happens!) as I too have had enough of moving. But we went to help out a bit last weekend and had a nice catch up. Managed to put together the latest Ikea purchases without any 'bits' left over afterwards too! lol.

So we got on to discussing tips for having a clear out and decluttering. It's the 'separation theory' - if you can put it all in a bag, and put it away eg in the loft for a year, and you still havent' used it, then throw it out after that! It makes it less agonising to choose what to put in the bag in the first place, and you can always go get it, whatever it is, if you find you really do need it after all! Do you agree? Or are you like my sis Linda who says 'if in doubt, chuck it out!'

Festive Best Day

This week's blooper - happened when Nikki from Lola Rose didn't know her own strength!! lol. go here to see it and also see more on this week's QVC blog. Next week's will be the hilarious one from a trick I played on Mally live on air in a makeup show this week! hehehehahaha! Was crying with laughter that's for sure! Plus also on the new qvc blog, lots of sneaky peeks of the week ahead plus what I got up to with my lovely son up London...

hope you have a great week!

Saw these smiling little chaps and thought that considering there are so many babies around at the moment, I would post this pic. What a lovely sentiment, don't you think? About 17 years ago I learned that happiness was a choice. It was just after I got divorced.  I wonder if your experiences are similar to mine… Do  let me know! I went through a kind of a metamorphosis, including having a carefully concealed tattoo (three chinese symbols, and no, they didn't stand for 'quality, value and convenience!' ) as well as extra piercings. The man on the abseiling event at Center Parcs made me take it out of my belly button two years later, though, or I couldn't participate, and I never got back round to putting it back in. Anyway... there came a period when I learned different ways of dealing with the things that made me unhappy, including family comments. the phrases 'you'll get over it' and 'when I chose this I didn't have you in mind' became part of my vocab and I began focussing more and more on good things, and having appreciation. An 'attitude of gratitude' is one of the best things to cultivate, I was told. So I did, and it's really helped.

Nowadays, I'm not so much a glass half full person, I'm a glass never empty and if it is a magic genie comes and tops it back up again... 'What can we learn from this' and 'everything happens for a reason' are two great mottoes.

If you'd like to see what self-help books I recommend, you can read more about them on a blog I did, here. Enjoy. Any you've liked? Let me know. And do remember that happiness is a habit, a choice, rather than always feeling that the world made you do it or feel this way... Easier said than done, but just like touching your toes, the more you do it the easier it becomes.

This week's updates-

Did some fun vlogs this week, on my Facebook page. Don't forget to 'like' the official Facebook page as that's where most of my news and updates go first - even if you're not on Facebook you can read them! I also do some live videos and 'vlogs' - video blogs - mostly from Devon - this week's included one particularly long one that took a stroll by the river with the dogs in the sunshine - it's on my new QVC blog will be here Friday afternoon ... The blog will also have early bird order links for the new Tarte cosmetics 6 part TSV set this Sunday.

Book of the Week - Clifton Chronicles' SIXTH - I'm romping through them now! it's 'Cometh the Hour' and is apt given this week's shenanigans at party conferences - more here. including the latest book and writing and retreat news.

Latest news about a super competition to win a four night stay down in Devon... in conjunction with the super Stroud Writing Festival - more here.

Have a great week!

Awful week for my poor joints, following the gung ho attempts at playing netball in Black Torrington on the last two Wednesdays. This week I had to sit it out, but turns out only a few people turned up so they didn’t do the usual anyway. Phew. My ankles are still suffering as I mentioned in my vlog here. It really helps if I put my feet up – literally. And all because the lady loves …exercise.

And if you want to see an amazing role model to women, exercise fanatic Davina McCall in a pic of her ‘mummy tummy’ just go here – top marks that girl! She says her skin on her tum is like a ‘shar pei’ – one of those dogs with loads of rolls. Well if I did mine you’d say ‘what is it? Whatever it is it needs ironing!’ lol. (I know, one of my oldest, but still a good one!)

Something that’ll make your skin lovely is a good serum.

Well do read the super update on this week’s QVC blog – includes a comp to win over £100 worth of AD Synergy skin serum, which can be used along with any other brand you may currently have. And the usual sneaky peeks at upcoming deals. And the full  Go here Friday late pm onwards.

Facebook has been active this week too – including some lovely creative people suggesting ideas that helped me ‘find’ my missing calendar entries on my i-phone – turns out it was a simple ‘settings’ adjustment for the sync function – what else! Lol. Also ‘like’ my official Facebook page DebbieFlintAuthorQVC  if you ARE on Fbk, to get the updates first. (And my early bird order links can be seen here – if you can’t find them elsewhere.)

Medical Detection Dogs have a big week too – with Dr Clare appearing on the BBC to announce that they are now looking into the clever canines helping to detect Parkinson’s Disease. More here. And don’t forget to come along to my concert in Devon, on September 16th at The Plough Arts Centre, which is helping to raise funds too – lovely 40s and 50s classics and show songs, it’ll be a great night.

Had a superb week at the retreat this week, with lovely guests, great meals, nice weather, a bit of successful gardening, and an enjoyable stint in the Sheepwash Village Shop on Tuesday. Also, my pal Carolyn came along for a stay and it was so nice to have a long overdue catch up. She’s a trend setter as far as the latest marketing tips for self publishers is concerned, and she makes me wish I’d never stopped self publishing my stories to KDP. Most of them are still there and I’m very proud of my author page – see it here.

Finally on the subject of books, my Book of the Week is a very exciting one – my mentor and tutor Julie Cohen – master of show not tell – has her new book ‘Together’ out this week in hardback and ebook and I’m delighted to feature it. Can’t wait to hear the audiobook read by a Game of Thrones actor. Go here to read more about it and see how to get a free sample.

Hope all good in your world?

Have a great week!

Tale of Two Eggs

Well, the right hand side is what it's supposed to look like. The left hand side is what it ended up like. Because yours truly thought I'd try the onventional way of creating a poached egg by just dropping the de-shelled egg into the boiling water. Put a bit of vinegar in the water, they said - that's the secret. So I did. Turns out the secret is also to not have the water roiling. Boiled and simmering it seems - otherwise this catastrophe happens! All over me nice Kuhn Rikon strainer pan! Anyway - the other one was done in my nice new electric poacher/boiler so I'll stick to that in future! Unless you have any tips on how to do it the old way? I'm feeling a bit determined not to give in...

Book of the week - am thrilled to say that a very successful author and all round nice lady, Cally Taylor, AKA C L Taylor, is coming to stay at Retreats for You again, in the summer. WIll get a copy of her paperback for her to sign to go on our bookshelves containing guests' works. Her book The Accident was a top ten 'debut of the year' in 2014 and since then there are another three novels in the series. Love her work. Go here to read all about this new book, in advance of her latest coming out in October!

Part Four - the final part - has been so well received again - in my series on emotional bullies. Probably due to featuring the programme Catching a Killer, which featured the extreme version of this nasty personality disorder. This week I had another guy tell me his story about a female version. There's so much of it about. more stories and more help and guidance, to not feel alone - on my website here. Do share the link to anyone who you think might need it - you never know, they may one day have their long overdue 'aha' moment too...

New website is up! The long awaited brand shiny new website for Retreats for You - my guest house down in Devon - is up at last! WHat do you think? Can you spot any mistakes or have any feedback? Do go look and email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to find out some intriguing offers for those helping me beta test the website... go here to see the new website for retreats for you in Sheepwash, Devon.

And some fabulous new reviews - check them out here on our Facebook page - very happy - that's what I am!

Daisy and Gracie have been entertaining visitors again - Daisy this time for being so damn cute. Here she was last week on one of our walks, with two of the lovely girls from facebook/QVC contacts. Funny pup eh? What do you think the caption should be?!!

Finally - were you right? Was I right? Come Friday morning, it'll all be over bar the shouting, and a new government will be in place. I had a funny feeling about the majority - but I could be completely wrong - go see the facebook post I did on Wednesday to see how close I was - or if you thought the same - go here.

Have a lovely week - next week, lots of pics from my hol in sunny Cyprus!

best wishes

Published in Debbie's News

Writing previously as Cally Taylor, with several feel good romances amongst others, this talented author has made a huge name for herself in crime fiction and become a Sunday Times Best Seller. The Accident is the first one made into audiobook and my pick of the week for my long journeys to and from my job in London and my writing retreat/guest house, Retreats for You in Devon. I love a good crime series and this is the first of FOUR! With the new one due out later in the year.

‘A rollercoaster of a suspense novel with multiple twists’ Daily Mail

"KEEPING THIS SECRET WAS KILLING HER…

A gripping psychological thriller about the deadly secrets your children can keep …

Sue Jackson has the perfect family but when her teenage daughter Charlotte deliberately steps in front of a bus and ends up in a coma she is forced to face a very dark reality.

Retracing her daughter’s steps she finds a horrifying entry in Charlotte’s diary and is forced to head deep into Charlotte’s private world. In her hunt for evidence, Sue begins to mistrust everyone close to her daughter and she’s forced to look further, into the depths of her own past.

Sue will do anything to protect her daughter. But what if she is the reason that Charlotte is in danger?"

This novel has over 880 five star reviews and made the top ten bestselling debuts list for 2014.

One review sums it up -

"This is a tense story, well told. Sue is a believable and, because you understand how she became the way she is, sympathetic. Her feelings of guilt (because being a parent is full of guilt, no matter how hard you try) and fear and the fierce need to protect her daughter were all wonderful. The secondary characters were brilliant (I especially liked Brian) and even the baddie is almost understandable.

A great book. It pretty much swallowed up my Sunday as I kept sneaking off to read it"

Get the Accident from Amazon here., knowing you have another four to go straight after. All three of Cally's other crime novels have been highly successful too, plus her new one The Treatment, is due out in October. Meanwhile I've ordered a copy of The Accident in paperback for Cally to sign when she visits us to write her next one, at our writing retreat in Devon this summer. We have two shelves brimming with finished works by previous guests. Looking forward to it.

NEXT WEEK - Chris James's book - ringing the changes a little - a non-fiction - his Mind Body Cleanse 12 day programme in book form - I think I'll need it when I get back from my Cyprus hol next week!

Regulars of this blog will know I'm a big fan of Jane Lovering's witty, quirky writing style and larger than life, flawed but compelling characters. Fellow Choc Lit author jane now has over xxx books out on Amazon and whilst I await the arrival of the latest on audiobook, I'm delving back into the backlist with StarStruck.

Am loving this tale of two hotties - Gethryn the Welsh TV soap super stud and Jack, aka The Ice Man, the script writer and show runner behind the top TV series that heroine Skye encounters on her trip to a sci fi convention in deepest hottest Nevada. I always love how Jane interweaves an intriguing back story into her tales, and this one is another that makes me look forward to getting back in the car to continue the audiobook as I want to find out what happens.

"Our memories define us don't they? And Skye Threppel lost most of hers in a car crash that stole the lives of her best friend and fiancé. It's left scars, inside and out, which have destroyed her career and her confidence. Skye hopes a trip to meet the actor she idolises will help her heal. But she bumps into mysterious Sci-fi writer Jack Whitaker first. An instant rapport soon becomes intense attraction, but Jack fears they can't have a future if Skye ever finds out about his past... Will their memories tear them apart, or can they build new ones together?"

You can see how Jane's writing style develops into what she has now become - even more original and funny than Star Struck - so hurry up Choc Lit, get the next one done on audiobook so I can listen to it on my long car journeys to and from Devon!

DEVON

I just love the fact that I live in Devon now - check out this beautiful sight I saw on one of this week's dog walks - click here to see the video - do you ever see these? Magical or what? click here to see video of a beautiful dragonfly...

and go here to see my facebook vlog with a walk around the local country market in Hatherleigh - bargains! (Like the Fbk page too  for future updates!) Silly Debbie bought a couple of items like hand made wooden planters for outside the front door, paid for them and asked to pick up from the stall-holders on the way back... then went home and forgot! It's a good excuse to go back next Tuesday morning tho.

Talking of magical, I'm not far from Cornwall so I must go and see Tintagel at some stage - home, apparently, according to ancient mythology, of King Arthur. And a very good film it was too! Went to see it in Okehampton this week with Wendy and I must say it was very very good. More on my QVC blog but do go see it if you can. I loved Guy Ritchie's directing - yes it was a bit self-indulgent at times, but I really liked it and I have to say with some key shots being no longer than a second, blink and you'll miss it, it kept the pace rip-roaring along, so I didn't fall asleep one bit. Mixed reviews but I loved it - and Charlie Hunnam was hot and very watchable on screen - a bit Tom Hardy I must say. He should have been Christian Gray but backed out. Fifty Shades lost out there that's for sure...

A Book first - how exciting is this! A proper French translation in paperback of my very first novel! Was ever so chuffed! More here.

Also on my QVC blog - lots more pics of the week, plus enter my super #Philosophy bumper bundle competition - and some fabulous TSV sneaky peeks - it's here late Friday.

Finally a very happy 11th birthday to my talented niece Lara. She has recently made me very proud because she won a drama scholarship at her school. And wants to be on the stage amongst other things… #ChipOffTheOldBlock:-)

And that story... is coming honest... more soon, come back for full blog late Friday.
