Published in Debbie's News

Book of the Week - Lucy Dillon is one of my favourite authors. I love the way she makes me really care about what happens to the characters in her books - usually with domestic plots and conflicts and true to life situations. I've read most of her books and love them.

This new one is fab and already highly reviewed.

You know those cracks in your heart, Lorna, where things didn't work out, but you picked yourself up and carried on? That's where the fear gets out. And where the light gets in.'

It was Betty, defiant to the end, who sent Lorna back to Longhampton. If Lorna's learned one thing from Betty, it's that courage is something you paint on like red lipstick, even when you're panicking inside. And right now, with the keys to the town's gallery in her hand, Lorna feels about as courageous as Betty's anxious little dachshund trembling beside her.

Lorna's come home to Longhampton to fulfil a long-held dream, but she knows deep down there are ghosts she needs to lay to rest first. This is where her tight-knit family shattered into silent pieces. It's where her unspoken fears about herself took root and where her own secret, complicated love began. It's not exactly a fresh start.

But as Lorna - and the little dog - tentatively open their cracked hearts to old friends and new ones, facing hard truths and fresh promises, something surprisingly beautiful begins to grow around the gallery, something so inspirational even Lorna couldn't have predicted the light it lets into her world....

Fabulous audio book too - so glad this one is out and it's already on my audible app on my iPhone for my long journeys to and from Devon!

LUCY DILLON - ALL I EVER WANTED. Another cracker from Lucy, one of my favourite relationships/romantic fiction writers. I always enjoy the fact that Lucy grabs my attention straight away - within a few paragraphs - vital when I'm on a long drive and want a wonderful distraction from the miles on the road (not from my driving of course!) on audiobook. Anyway, this latest one does not disappoint. I love the tension she creates and the conflict that keeps us entranced. Highly recommended.

"Caitlin's life is a mess. Her marriage to a man everyone else thinks is perfect has collapsed, along with her self-esteem, and breaking free seems the only option. Nancy, her four-year-old daughter, used to talk all the time; in the car, at nursery, to her brother Joel. Then her parents split up. Her daddy moves out. And Nancy stops speaking.

Nancy's Auntie Eva, recently widowed and feeling alone, apart from the companionship of two bewildered pugs, is facing a future without her husband or the dreams she gave up for him. But when Eva agrees to host her niece and nephew once a fortnight, Caitlin and Eva are made to face the different truths about their marriages - and about what they both really want . . ."

Book of the Week –

One of my top authors has a convenient backlist which I am working my way through on audiobook and I’ve reached the last one, one of her earliest, ‘The Ballroom Class.’ It’s still good though. Lucy’s writing always pulls me in right away, with gripping openings or compelling family situations we can identify with, and develops from there. This one features several couples and their own dramas, as they try to solve them using weekly dance classes.

Lauren and Chris are getting married, and Lauren's dreaming of a fairytale wedding with a first dance to make Cinderella proud. Not wanting to be shown up on the dancefloor, her parents Bridget and Frank have come along too. They normally never put a foot wrong, but Bridget's got a secret that could trip them up unexpectedly. Meanwhile Katie and Ross are looking for a quick-fix solution to their failing marriage even though neither is quite sure who's leading who anymore.

As friendships form over the foxtrot, the rumba rocks relationships, and the tango leads to true love, all the students in the Ballroom Class are about to face the music and dance...

From Olivia on amazon:
There are plenty of laughs to be had from bride-to-be Lauren’s over-the-top wedding plans but, be warned, this novel also had me sobbing on a train. Lucy Dillon writes with such heart, you can’t help caring for her characters. A treat from beginning to end.

Well done that lady!

Two fab women’s fiction romances for you this week.

First another from my latest fave author – Lucy Dillon. Walking Back to Happiness is a good one to choose if you have lost someone and think you’ll never find love. Or just love a good tale of interwoven lives, loves and betrayal and forgiveness. It’s good, although Lucy’s later ones are far superior. Glad I read it and delightful doggy characters too!

Juliet's been in hiding. From her family, from her life, but most of all from the fact that Ben's not around anymore. Her mother, Diane, has run out of advice. But then she insists Juliet look after her elderly Labrador, and it becomes apparent that Coco the dog might actually be the one who can rescue her daughter. Especially when it leads to her walking dogs for a few other locals, too, including a spaniel, Damson, who belongs to a very attractive man....

Go here to find out more about it on amazon.

Jill Mansell’s older books are also now being put on Audible in audiobook, including The One You Really Want. I liked listening to this story which includes some superstar lifestyles and high flyers, but sadly the key male voices were read like one of them was Eeyore and the other one his Irish brother. Nice easy-reading story though, as usual from Jill. I tend to dip into Jill Mansell novels every so often in between heavier fodder.  Very of its time (around 2006 it must have been written I think, considering the references to technology and smoking.) and strong characterisation is the key with this style of writing. It’s highly reviewed too – 4.4 avge out of over 1000 reviews!.  Go here to find out more.

Other news –

-          How to build stronger scenes – from the scriptlab gang, this still applies to novel writing – or any level of storytelling really! Go here.

-          How to write a novel and get published – workshop with Claire MacGowan in London on Sept 24th – if you’re interested in writing a novel, go here to find out more! I always recommend doing some form of study unless you’re going to write half a dozen novels and just learn as you go along, and this course by master crime-storyteller Claire could be the springboard.

Riwisi lost dogs and lonely hearts

Book of the Week Am really enjoying a new one from one of my fave authors Lucy Dillon. Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts is once again narrated really well (I love audiobooks as regulars will know!) and this is one of Lucy’s earlier novels. It’s a little more like a Jill Mansell with multiple storylines and am loving the way she draws you into the novel straight away and makes you care about what happens to the characters so effectively.

ROMANTIC NOVEL OF THE YEAR 2010.

When the abandoned strays from a local dogs' home are matched with brand new owners, it turns out it might not just be the dogs who need rescuing.

Rachel's aunt has left her a house, a Border Collie and, despite knowing nothing about dogs, a crowded kennel. But since her life has collapsed she's not sure she can deal with any more lost souls.

Zoe's ex-husband has given their children a puppy. The kids are in love, but she's the one stuck training Toffee the impossible Labrador. She's nearly at the end of her tether - until Toffee leads her to a handsome doctor . . .

Meanwhile Natalie and Johnny's marriage hasn't been easy since they started trying for a baby. But is a fridge-raiding, sofa-stealing Basset hound like Bertie really the child substitute they're looking for?

As the new owners' paths cross on the town's dog-walking circuits, their lives become interwoven. And they - and their dogs - learn some important lessons about loyalty, companionship and unconditional love . . .

Go here to see all of lucy’s books on Amazon. She’s fab! And this book  of the week is currently still in the top 100 and on special deal at 99p! get it soon! And afterwards get her ‘One Small Act of Kindness’ and ‘100 pieces of me!’ BTW she’s a QVC viewer! Cool!

Other news –

-          Have been loving writing about my 1920s era, in French or Dutch, my next novel to be written! Currently researching the Marie Stopes connection with fiery meetings in local towns around the UK – she was quite a character!

-          Looking for an agent? Did you know there’s such a thing as ‘manuscript wish list’ ? Some agents use it to tout for new works – go here to see one! Am looking forward to attending a meeting about non-fiction agents on Saturday 6th August too – run by Writers’ Workshop/Bloomsbury – will be fascinating!

Next week – Julie Cohen, my mentor’s new novel Falling is out! Get it here now on pre-order!

A charming, absorbing story with a cute title – One Small Act of Kindness by Lucy Dillon. Lucy was one of the authors I met at a Romantic Novelists Association RONA awards dinner last year. She wrote the excellent A Hundred Pieces of Me and I enjoyed the audiobook so much I thought I’d get this one too. And it’s just charming. Enough cleverly crafted conflict to keep me entranced, with characters who are just on the right side of real. But what really impressed me was several totally unpredictable events in the plot. And I pride myself on being able to guess what’s coming next!

What can you do to make the world a better place? Libby helps a stranger and transforms her life in the process.

Libby and her husband, Jason, have moved back to his hometown to turn the family B&B into a boutique hotel. They have left London behind and all the memories - good and bad - that went with it. The injured woman Libby finds lying in the remote country road has lost her memory. She doesn't know why she came to be there, and no one seems to be looking for her.

When Libby offers to take her in, this one small act of kindness sets in motion a chain of events that will change many people's lives...

It’s highly reviewed too – and I’d recommend the audiobook since the narrator is excellent. I’ll look out for more from her – Lucy Price-Lewis – on Audible, too.

Go here to get One Small Act of Kindness from Amazon.

Awards!

Along I went to my first ever award bash – at the RNA summer party on Thursday night.

Here are all the nominees – how proud am I to see my Take a Chance on Me amongst the line up!

MORE TO FOLLOW

Go here to get my first novel Take a Chance on Me (Choc Lit) on amazon or order it from your local bookshop.

Take a Chance on Me - the story of Mac and Sadie and their race to seal a life changing deal within 30 days, and stay out of love! Mac is a playboy millionaire who must never mix business with pleasure. Sadie is a feisty single mum and determined rookie businesswoman on a man ban - until she 'accidentally' has a one night stand with a hunky crewman on a luxury yacht. Then her world turns upside down.

Highly reviewed on Amazon!

See below for my full list of books, short stories and anthologies, as well as non fiction.

Stop press! The best bit of news I had this week was from Lyn who runs Choc Lit – they are taking my Till the Fat Lady Slims book (TTFLS) in WHSmith travel outlets at Xmas! How proud am I! The one they will take is the one that sold out in Hardback on QVC last year – so it’s another chance to get yours. It’ll precede the release of Try it For the First Time Club, the follow up to TACOM, which will be out early next year in the shops.

Or if you can’t wait, go here to get TTFLS from amazon – book 2.0 is the main one, and companion 3.0 is also available.

Friday update – coming soon – news from Bristol Crimefest, where I’m off to Friday onwards!

Best wishes

So another big week for my writing! I went to the RNA Summer party where they chose the new Romantic Novelist Association best new book from their New Writers’ Scheme. And the winner had a brilliant title –

No One Wants to Be Miss Haversham.

Now I haven’t read it but if it’s on audio book, I just might! The winner is usually excellent, so worth a go if you’re looking for a new book. Well done Brigid Coady who won the £1000 prize for the Joan Hessayon Award. More here.

I’m told next year, my first novel with Choc Lit, Take a Chance on Me, qualifies as a contender – now wouldn’t that be a thrill to even hit the shortlists!

The audiobook that kept me company on my long journey down to Devon last weekend was my Book of the Week is Lucy Dillon’s One Hundred Pieces of Me., winner of the Best Contemporary Romantic Novel Award 2015 from the RNA.

It’s a charming book, really well written, taking you through one woman’s life via her trinkets and memories, interwoven amidst a compelling love story – I’m really enjoying the audio book so well done Lucy! I think I can predict the ending but the fun with romances is finding out HOW the author takes you there… Loving the little scaredy-dog called Buzz too… Am not at the end yet but I think it’ll be a good five star book for me! Great to get into a good new author too – she’s got lots of other books. And as she told me at the RNA awards – she and her mum watch QVC sometimes too! More here.

Take a Chance on Me – in Paperback in Shops for Xmas!

Also at the RNA summer party last week, my publisher, Choc Lit, told me that not only is my own novel eligible to be entered for next year’s Joan Hessayon best new novel award, but the book will also be out in some bookshops by December! under their new banner of 'Hot' Choc Lit! I can’t wait! It’s that moment, right? OMG that will be one TiFFT Selfie! I will keep you informed!

Hawaiian Escape Deal

So to celebrate, on 6th June I will be offering Hawaiian Escape, the first in the series, at a discount -just 99p for five days. Sign up for the newsletter to keep informed and not miss it! (top left of this page and don’t forget to confirm the subscription by email after!

And finally French or Dutch is beginning to take shape. And I’m very very pleased with it so far. I’m toying with the idea of sending it to an agent this time, but otherwise it will be self published as it’s a historical Saga. My next Romance will likely be the extended version of Battle of the Exes, in time for Xmas. Or maybe the spin off to the Hawaiian Trilogy, where we find out what happened to the Kate character… Will keep you informed!

Other news –

-          Get Scrivener  - so I watched the webinar, mentioned last week, and got a piece of software called Scrivener, which is apparently a brilliant organiser for novelists, was top of my shopping list in Devon. Well the current WIP (work in progress) is going to be a long historical saga (kind of) and will have many parts and sub plots, so I thought it a good move. The creator, Joseph Michael, even gives video tutorials on how to organise your plot, characters, notes, research and more. (get your free trial here.)

-          Winner of the goodie bag from last week's Crimefest feature is Christine Elliot - congrats Christine!

 best wishes

Went to the Romantic Novelists’ Awards Event – RoNAs

My first industry event as a published signed author was Monday night – felt very different, I must say! This is the grand library at One Whitehall Place – can you just about see none other than Barbara Taylor Bradford in the background?! It was a great night, had some lovely chats, including with two of the beta readers, Vanessa and Mary – Vanessa told me she loved Liz Earle. And – can’t get away from it – one of the lovely category WINNERS was Lucy Dillon herself, who told me she leaves QVC on at home for her Bassett Hounds to watch! Lol!

Fab night and loved being part of it. Who knows, maybe one day one of mine will be nominated! Julie Cohen’s was, here she is with me, another author Jean Fullerton (who writes the ‘Call Nurse Millie’ sagas) and Alison May, also with Choc Lit.

Barbara Taylor Bradford presented the awards, which was a huge honour for all concerned since most cited 'A Woman of Substance' as one of their key influences, and she was both funny and delightful, telling everyone, Brucie style, that the star shaped award was because 'you are a star,' and saying at one point in her own inimitable way that 'writing can be hard, but when it goes perfectly right, it's like having a good orgasm. She's 81!

Book of the Week – A Hundred Pieces of Me

So naturally my Book of the Week is one of the winners. Lucy Dillon’s lovely story takes her through the memories associated with the trinkets she is clearing out to make space in her house – with unexpected consequences. The judges loved it and she won the hotly contested Contemporary Romantic Novel category. Already highly reviewed, you can get it here on Amazon, where you'll see it has 4.3 out of 5 average over 106 reviews!

Go to bottom of page to find out more about it and the other winners on the Romantic Novelists Association site – in case you want to add some new authors to your collection! I've already downloaded 'THe Girl Who Came Home' by Hazel Gaynor, with 86 five star reviews, about a young Irish woman on the Titanic, a seamless blend of fact and fiction. My next book on audible, along with Lucy's! Yay!
