Debbie Flint

This week I am over the moon with my favourite ex-military cop Jack Reacher's latest from Lee Child. The hardback is out at same time as audiobook so I devoured it. Love the way Lee Child writes, and loved the new more caring twist he's included in this one. 'the Midnight Line' did not let me down. He is one of my top authors so I will always leap at the chance to read the new one. Twenty two novels in, he's still compelling, compulsive and competent.

Jack Reacher takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It's tiny. It's a woman cadet's graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher's a West Pointer, too, and he knows what she went through to get it.

Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she's OK, he'll walk away. If she's not...he'll stop at nothing.

He's still shaken by the recent horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don't get in his way.

A more thoughtful novel, some think - take this review, from Amazon -

"Strangely enough, it is not action packed, but I think it his best book yet.
It made me think about returning combat veterans and the opioid addiction epidemic in the USA, wondering if those things were mirrored in the UK. Normally I know what to expect from Lee Child, but this was more - slightly darker. I recommend it heartily. Put your Reacher expectations to one side and appreciate the underlying story."

Regulars will know I’m a massive Jack Reacher fan – ever since I interviewed Lee Child on QVC in 2011 when he launched his prequel ‘The Affair’ – I voraciously devoured all 16 of his Reacher novels and found myself another hero to follow.

Well the short stories are a little appetiser in between the main courses that constitute his mostly annual new releases and this week I listened to Not a Drill.

It’s a brief foray into one of Reacher’s encounters, this time with some ramblers in deepest Maine’s ancient forests. Julie Cohen my writing mentor would love this, as she comes from Maine! What I most loved about this was narrator Kerry Shale’s accents – his precision is admirable. Very entertaining and another great read.

"The tiny town of Naismith has nothing going for it - except the start of a wilderness trail through Maine's ancient forests. But one day the trail is suddenly closed by county police.

No reason is given. Rumours start - is there something in the woods that no one must see? That no one must even know about? Then Jack Reacher drifts into town. What does he make of the Do Not Enter tape strung between the trees…"

More here on Amazon. BUT if you’re going to get his short stories, get the whole lot, called ‘No Middle Name (which of course Jack Reacher has) on audible as a single volume – it’s ELEVEN hours long - get it here.

Plus – listen for free to a full interview here with Lee Child talking about his work, his writing, the novel Night School, (which I loved) and his thoughts on Tom Cruise playing 6’4 Jack Reacher on the big screen.

Meanwhile I’ve already pre-ordered The Midnight Line, the next novel, Jack Reacher 22, due out in November. …

Burning Question of the Day – Does your Brain do this Weird Thing too?

Had to laugh this week, when my brain did a weird thing after painting the kitchen walls at our Devon guest house, Retreats for You – and I need your thoughts on it too. I was listening to a particular TV programme whilst doing the kitchen window frame – and blow me, now if I look at the frame I can conjure up exactly what was going on at that moment, down to the actual topic of conversation between the two interviewees! Why does the brain do that? Does yours? If you’d like to hear a couple of other examples of mine, from when that’s happened in the past, just watch this Vlog I did where I discussed it, as I walked along the river Torridge last week during my six nights off, after I got back from France. By the way, just click that link – you don’t have to be on Facebook to access these vlogs (but if you are, ‘like’ the page to not miss any).

When I did that post, Karen T said – ‘My brain keeps remembering favourite clothing and accessories I used to have years ago in relation to places and other triggers. Odd ball! Even stuff I had when I was ten! Vivid memories of colours, fabrics- even an Old England purple wrist watch with HUGE Roman numerals my sister bought me from Carnaby Street in the 1960s. And a few jersey/crimplene mini skirts from Chelsea Girl- it goes on... weird!’

And Andy H said ‘This is so true, I was working on a drawing of an interior decades ago and the radio was serialising 'The Good Soldier Sveg' by Jaroslav Hasek, it's as though one activity cements the other in the brain.’

Whereas Laura D said a brilliant one – ‘My weirdest one is when I turn on the shower - I think of having lunch in a certain restaurant with one of my friends! I think of what we ate, what we spoke about - even about a window cleaner who was cleaning the windows of the restaurant. Heaven knows what the connection is to the shower!!! Just weird! I often wondered if it was just me ....so I'm very relieved to hear it happens to you too Debbie!’

Anyway…

The kitchen is now done. The kitchen…

Is…

Now…

Done.

*Siiiiiigh.*

It fills me with glee to say that. And I can’t wait to see Wendy’s reaction when she walks in and sees the whole thing newly painted and gleaming too! More on this week’s QVC blog here (out Fri pm) also including Early Bird links to both Liz Earle AND OPI tsv deals launching soon.

Fancy a Stay in Devon? Would you like to come down? I’ve got a new date for QVC viewers,  if you are one, and fancy a fab full board stay – you can inspect the new kitchen and decide if Daisy and Gracie have indeed got trimmer! More info here, or just email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . It’s 26th June and can include yoga/walking and wholesome food – and wine! £90 pppn if you book soon – do come?

Other news -

Book of the week is the Jack Reacher short story, Not a Drill, click here for more info – including about a freebie  – two in fact, not just his free audible interview including his opinion about Tom Cruise playing 6’4” Jack Reacher on the big screen, but also my new short story, a freebie available on my website from MONDAY LATE (apologies for delay).

And still time to decide on which songs I should sing in September, at the event happening in Devon – can you come? It’s in Torrington at the Plough, and will feature classics like ‘What a difference a Day Makes’ and ‘That Ole Devil Love’ – more here if you’d like to choose from the list of songs – which is your favourite?

Have a fun week!

Published in Debbie's News

Now I’m a massive Jack Reacher fan and I’ll take the big guy any way you wanna serve him up, which in this case is a flashback novel based when he was still a Military Cop in the late nineties, when sidekick Neagly was still on the scene. Absolutely fabulous as ever, full of twists and turns and action and come-uppance and revenge and tight situations that Reacher always gets out of, he puts Tom Cruise to shame! (the latest film version of one of Lee's novels is sadly lacking apparently although I'll probably still go see it! lol.)

I have been driving a lot in the car and loving every minute of listening to the fabulous audiobook, read with the usual panache by Jeff Harding, who is the definitive Reacher, for me.

We go back to Germany in 1997 and a plot to sell some sort of mysterious booty in return for a hundred million dollars (probably 200m now!) with all sorts of collusion and Middle Eastern threats ahead of time. I love Reacher as the ex-Military Cop but I also love these novels. I just can't wait for the next one. I guess I'll have to succumb to some of the novellas and flashback stories also available.

Jack Reacher is fresh off a secret mission and a big win. The Army pats him on the back and gives him a medal. And then they send him back to school. It’s a school with only three students: Reacher, an FBI agent, and a CIA analyst. Their assignment? To find that American. And what he’s selling. And to whom. There is serious shit going on, signs of a world gone mad.

love this review too -

"Reacher is unchanged in this 21st of his adventures. He wins all fights, charms all women and outsmarts all rivals, friend or foe. What makes Night School the best of the Reacher novels I've read is that Child has concocted a brilliant plot...battling to save America, or maybe the entire civilised world, from a terrorist plot that is original, engrossing and all too believable...one of the best thrillers you'll read this year." (Washington Post)

Roll on the 22nd novel!

Have a lovely week

d

I couldn’t resist it! A real Brit success story. And i've been looking forward to this for MONTHS ever since finding out about it from Lee himself at the Crime Fest in Bristol in May.

“A remote railroad stop on the prairie with the curious name of Mother's Rest seems perfect for an aimless one-day stopover.
He expects to find a lonely pioneer tombstone in a sea of nearly-ripe wheat ... but instead there is a woman waiting for a missing colleague, a cryptic note about two hundred deaths, and a small town full of silent, watchful people.
Reacher’s one-day stopover becomes an open-ended quest...into the heart of darkness…”

As always, as Lee says on his website, Reacher’s rule is ‘if you want me to stop, you’re going to have to make me!’

OMG what a fantastic audiobook, I just love Jeff holding reading one of my favourite authors, and one of my favourite heroes, Jack reacher, in his latest outing – on top form, dealing with the baddies as only he can, I blimmin love his adventures :-) 10 out of 10 for me.

One day, when I’m a grown-up, I want to write books like Lee Child. For now, I’ll just get lost in Jack Reacher!

If you’ve never seen it, here is my interview with Lee on QVC in 2011. Click here for part one and here for part two.

And better than that, here’s Duncan Munro, the ‘aussie Jack Reacher’ ‘roasting’ him at none other than the ‘romantic times’ convention in 2014! Not sure Duncan is my idea of Reacher – my Reacher would be more brooding… You? Click here to watch it. And see how many book titles you can spot!

Get it here on Amazon click here.

Part two of the Daisy's War Trilogy is my Book of the Week - the Nurse's War by Merryn Allingham. Book one was a best seller!

Also - win a goodie bag in this week's giveaway!

Plus - meeting up with Lee Child again, and this year's Crimefest weekend in Bristol!

Crimefest

Oh what a good time we had! As you can see, I met up with Lee Child, top selling author and all round good guy, creator of maverick ex-army cop Jack Reacher. In 2011 I interviewed Lee when he came to QVC, launching The Affair, the prequel to all of his Jack Reacher novels, and a great place to begin if you've not read any yet. Go here for Amazon link. Anyway I spotted him chatting in the coffee bar on the ground floor of the Bristol Marriot and caught him as he got up to leave. He said 'good to see you again,' which was great, even if he was just saying it to be nice! But he gave a lot of time to the readers and writers during the evening in the bar and also the next day when he was on panel discussing brains versus brawn.

He said an interesting thing - that in dramatic fight scenes, they are usually over really fast. And that the scene in One Shot (which was made into a movie with Tom Cruise) where Reacher faces five thugs was based on Lee's own playground experience - he sounded like a right hard nut himself! Apparently it really happened in a back alleyway during his school years when he was around 8 or 9. He hit the first kid really hard, then the next two the same, and the other two ran away. Meaning the line 'it's never five against one - if you can take out the first three, the other two run,' was based on history. Also Lee pointed out that in real life no one waits politely for the fallen opponent to get up again, it's 'make him fall, kick him in the head whilst he's down.' No wonder Jack Reacher wins nearly all of his fights with Lee as his alter ego...

Anyway, the next novel, 'Make Me', will be out in September, and I can't wait.

My pal Litty Williams came second in the hotly contested Flash Bang flash fiction competition (under 150 words) - well done her! But our crime pub quiz expertise was sorely lacking - we did object to being called 'the Rejects' as a team name by the elderly quirky American guy who they'd appointed as our table captain, but to no avail - and we came third from bottom! Fun though. And lovely facilities - a pool and gym. So I had a massage - haha!

I really enjoyed the Crimefest panels, with much debate amongst successful authors about various aspects of novel writing and crime fiction. More info here about next year's - click here. I'll be going. See you there?

FICTION FOCUS – Hawaiian Escape’ – the PREquel to ‘Hawaiian Affair’ / ‘Take a Chance on Me’(Choc Lit). I’ve written seven titles now, all on Amazon, so this summer, I’m taking you through them one at a time! Hawaiian Escape is one of the best places to start – in steamy version or less steamy!

THE STORY Sadie and Helen are sisters but both unhappy in love. Sadie’s ex, Stuart has a younger lover and gloats at every opportunity especially when her business takes a turn for the worst. In Hawaiian Escape, we find out what brought Sadie to the competition that changed her life – an amazing trip to Hawaii, and the events leading up to meeting Mac in Hawaiian Affair /TACOM.

I wrote Hawaiian Escape as a short story but it expanded and expanded and then suddenly out came Helen, Sadie’s older, mischievous sister and the story of her steamy encounters in Tuscany at the annual conference with Alessandro just had to be told. So Hawaiian Escape tells us Helen’s background too, as it takes us from Italy to leafy Surrey to New York and some funny encounters with Mr Right Now – or is he… A great summer holiday read, or if you’re looking for unpredictable plot twists and some larger than life characters!

“Wow, this book is quite literally a page turner! I couldn't put it down. A fantastic prequel to Debbie's Hawaiian Affair novel, not only does this book take you on a geographical journey, but also that of love, romance and passion.

A wonderful book outlining a fantastic relationship between two sisters who are helping each other whilst going on their own spiritual journey.

Challenges, drama and hilarious comedic moments I would thoroughly recommend this book. Please follow on with HAWAIIAN AFFAIR.” Amazon review. Hawaiian Retreat is book 3.

Go here to get it on Amazon – in eBook or in Paperback – in ‘PG (non steamy)’ or in Steamy versions!

WIP Research #1 - French or Dutch research reveals fascinating facts about London's Vintage Past.  I was truly distracted this week with a glimpse into London's street lighting past and info about who keeps the tradition going. I was writing a scene where the heroine walks into a dingy Village Hall for a meeting with her heroine, and the streets have to be dim. Hence my googling. This is what I found.

  • There are just 1,500 gas lamps left in London, each one hand-lit by a member of a five man team every evening
  • The 19th-century lamps offer a glimpse of the city as it would have been during the time of Charles Dickens
  • Current team of London lamplighters are actually British Gas engineers - but their efforts go largely unsung
  • That the gas lamps have survived is partly a tribute to English Heritage, which has protected and restored them

A sense of old London: That the gas lamps have survived is partly a tribute to English Heritage, which has protected and restored them
