Debbie Flint

You may or may not know that I am published with UK independent publisher Choc Lit, and my very first novel with them, Take a Chance on Me, became a top 50 best selling e book last year. My ambition of a lifetime was fulfilled at Christmas, when it went into bookshops including WH Smith travel, where it reached number 79 in the charts. It was such a pleasure to see my book on a proper bookshop shelf, via a proper publisher.

Well the latest news is that Lyn my lovely publisher has now sold the French rights to a company who will be doing the translation into French! That has finally made me feel like a proper author :-)

Previously she informed me that Antonia Beamish would be narrating, for Howes. Their Wholebook Audio is huge and you will be able to get it on CD as well as download eg via audible. Antonia has an excellent voice and I was thrilled to talk to her on the phone - which according to the Crimefest panel from audible, is quite rare.

now available - full report is here

Finally a look ahead. My next book will be the sister;s story. There is a prequel called Hawaiian Escape on Amazon which takes you into the past before Take a

Chance on Me happened. So my current Work in Progress is set just afterwards, and is based on, but NOT IDENTICAL TO, my sequel, previously published as Hawaiian Retreat.

Had a fabulous weekend away. At the end of the two days at Julie Cohen and Rowan Coleman’s writing retreat in Somerset, I’d -

- completed over a quarter of the revisions to Hawaiian Affair, for my publisher Choc Lit

- finalised a new title for my WIP - a series of novellas based on a scandalous ideal in 1920's, a kind of Mr Selfridge meets Call the midwife meets Downton Abbey.

- worked out the theme, the byline for the front cover and covered off the plot arcs for the first seven novellas in the series and the overall first series arc.

- made lots of new pals

- heard some fabulous tips

- walked in a wood with Badger viewing areas, a woodland classroom and a pig you could stroke (I was surprised how warm its skin was – don’t know why I thought it would be cooler!)

- ate some fabulous food and avoided too much bad stuff, and even did a bit of Bodyblade in my lovely studio room that overlooked the rolling distant hills. Read more about it on my News blog from Sunday, here.

It’s how I write, getting away from it all. Then I can totally focus and not let life get in the way. Which it does for most of us of course. But some of the promised we made at the end of the course were a schedule of what we would do by when. And at least I know after the punishing schedule I had this year, that I am capable of it, even if it means little sleep and stiff shoulders! Now I’ve just got to do it!

Meanwhile the Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss book continues to sell well. I guess books in that genre always will. The thing is, what do you do when they… don’t? Joanna Penn wrote a feature about what to do if your book isn’t selling – more for first time self-publishers, but interesting none the less – find out more about the checklist she’s created after years of her own experiences. AudioBook of the Week – The Rivers of London

Ben Aaronovitch’s supernatural book came on the back of our Hallowe’en anthology, so I was just in the mood to read about river sprites and wizards and people being possessed – in a ‘cosy crime’ kind of way though – it’s a bit of both! But the star of the audiobook is the narrator – Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is definitely on my watch list now – his narration was funny, great accents, fabulous delivery and excellent timing. His Mr Punch voice is utterly spine chilling too! He lifted a good book to a great one – I’d listen to it again and there aren’t many I’d say that about! 9 out of ten from me. Here’s a taster:

“My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just a probationary constable in that mighty army for justice … the Metropolitan Police Service (known) as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – where you do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England…”

Update on Paperback of whole Hawaiian Trilogy in PG

‘Course what you could do is offer an unbelievable deal! Well, a good one – IMHO, lol! All three of my romance novels, Hawaiian Escape, Hawaiian Affair and Hawaiian Retreat, in that order, will be going up on Amazon for one month only in one bumper paperback, in PG version for gifting. More news next week, when I’ll have the big cover reveal! But do get ready to buy it on December 1st! The preorder will go on sale before that.

How to’s

Lots of people still asking advice about where to begin with self-publishing, naturally. There is a plethora of info out there. Notably some of the sites listed on my ‘beginner’s guide’ – see below. Just recently another person commented on the guest blog I did for The Creative Penn in April – asking about how to set up a readers group to help get reviews. This was my reply –

“Some beginner authors I know build up their social media platform, first, following and chatting to followers/readers of other authors who write in a genre similar to their own. Then you can ask if any of these new contacts could help with reviews. You may find, as I did, that you can form your own little beta readers group on Facebook.  (Relationship building is what social media is there for nowadays, of course, so a newcomer should in general be doing this anyway to build up their platform if they want to be taken seriously later by a publisher.) Good luck!”

Go here to read more, including a new update in the comments section on how Facebook has changed even since April and how to use it in your quest to gain readers – and sales.

Have a fab week!

This week I’ve been loving a fascinating book on audible called Lady Catherine and the real Downton Abbey.’  Plus I’ve been preparing to go away on another writing retreat this weekend with Julie Cohen, genius mentor and tutor. The aim is to get my edits done for Hawaiian Affair, for ‘my publisher’ (gotta love being able to say that!) Choc Lit. And then to work on the plot for ‘French or Dutch,’ my next title, working it into a series of novellas, which can also be made into TV episode scripts. Well that’s the plan! Next week I’m off to LA for a week, too, so that’ll be great for more writing too! One of my favourite places is to be in a diner writing, watching Hollywood life go on all around me. Can’t wait!

Some interesting ‘other news’ is as usual below – to help you if you’re a writer - enjoy!

PS if you did buy and enjoy Hocus Pocus ’14 – click here – do be sure and review it afterwards for us!

News Update – Coming soon - Hawaiian Prize Trilogy in one PG paperback – out 28th November – my three existing romance novels, Hawaiian Escape, Hawaiian Affair and Hawaiian Retreat, about sisters Sadie and Helen, and their romantic fortunes, or misfortunes in some cases! All in one book, for xmas gifts – with the most steamy bits omitted so you can confidently give it as a present! Three weeks and counting!

Book of the Week - ‘Lady Catherine and the real Downton Abbey.’ As you may know if you’re a regular, I’m researching the 1920’s for a new series of novellas, French or Dutch. In the process, a book caught my eye which was about the real Downton Abbey – the inhabitants of Highclere Castle, the location used for Downton in the TV series. Thoroughly enjoyable as a snapshot of life in those times, there’s a lot of personal thoughts, dialogue and presumably, info on events in the inter war period taken from letters written at the time. I loved the scene setting, the elements of everyday life sprinkled into the history and the characterisation that comes through loud and clear. Very well written and also well read by the current Countess herself. Some elements ring a bell as potentially having inspired Julian Fellowes, the creator of the TV series, eg that Catherine was an American woman, but mostly it’s just a fascinating account of a period of unprecedented change. It takes you through the abdication of Edward the VIIIth, as well as the whole of the second world war, from the personal point of view of individuals affected by the events and repercussions of the era. Fabulous, and highly recommended. There’s another one, about Almina, Catherine’s predecessor, the woman married to the Earl of Carnarvon who discovered Tutaknhamun’s tomb – so that might be next on my list!

I also bought myself a soundtrack of Downton at Christmas – some lovely choral tracks – which you can just imagine being sung in the church at yuletide in Downton. Go here for more info.

HAWAIIAN UPDATE

Ok, hands up, so I missed my deadline of 31st December for my Hawaiian eXtra, steamy download. Sorry! I’ll blame it on the dog. Well, the running around as a result of the poor hound losing an eye after a nasty injury, to be frank. But no more excuses – it will be done in January! Honest! So keep checking back in on this website to find out more, and do please think about subscribing to my weekly newsletters to make sure you don’t miss anything! READING IS GOOD FOR THE BRAIN

And in case you missed it, here’s a very interesting article about how reading affects the brain! Apparently, ‘Reading a gripping novel causes biological changes in the brain which last for days as the mind is transported into the body of the protagonist’. See – reading my romance novels could make your brain think you’re really Sadie, having a steamy affair in Hawaii! Or increase your brain power! Lol!
