Another genius performance on audiobook from one of my top five narrators ever - and Ben Aaronovitch's book is yet again brought to life in a uniquely entertaining way by the talented actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. It's the latest outing from his famous London copper, with special skills in the supernatural, and it's fabulous.

This time, PC Peter Grant and his quirky boss Nightingale are on the tube...

A stunning PC Peter Grant audiobook continues this best-selling series with commuting ghosts, a kidnapping, and a superb new London mystery!

PC Peter Grant is heading west.

There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line. And when commuters start reporting encounters with ghosts up and down the track - encounters which they forget entirely within minutes - Peter Grant gets a call to investigate. And the very first interview leads to a ghost-hunting expedition....

The first ever Peter Grant novella, this is a fantastic London-based mystery.

Now I love every syllable that Kobna utters, and his talent for accents, as well as his knack of making them all sound so different - not just the accent but the whole way of speaking - it's a skill not many narrators have. If you love audiobooks, do listen to the Rivers of London series by Aaronovitch - it's so well-crafted, and there are loads of them to get your teeth into - or your fangs...

What about this freebie audiobook from brilliant writer Ben Aaronovitch, author of the Peter Grant Rivers of London series.

Firstly, I absolutely love his writing and have read all of the Rivers of London series of novels. With the supernatural theme, PC Peter Grant explores the spooky goings on in and around London, but it is the performance of narrator Kobna Holbrook Smith that really gets me every time. His voice is amazing, his narration is brilliant, his comic timing is superb, they could not be a better narrator for Ben's clever writing. A Rare Book of Cunning Device is an Audible exclusive, a short story that is currently free, a good 29 minutes of entertainment if you've not come across anything like this before, and a taster as to what to expect if you then want to go to buy the series starting with book 1 rivers of London. Book of the Week – Camino Island by John Grisham. Not one of his most taxing offerings, and a book that reads exactly like watching a film. But a pleasant way to spend my hours in the car nonetheless. A heist in the world of collectables world goes wrong, and we get to know an undercover rare books dealer whose front is a successful bookshop on Camino Island. The dilemma faced by a young girl involved in assisting the enquiry, is what keeps the story going. Not one of his finest but worth a read if you have audible credits that have not cost full whack. To be honest I think John Grisham seems to have changed his style, in the last few books I have read. Maybe using ghostwriters or helpers to take his writing in a different direction, otherwise it's as if the prose is purely describing what would be seen if it was made into a film, which let's face it most of his stuff has been! So who can blame him? I will probably keep buying John Grishams but mainly because with my audible credits I only pay about £3.70 per credit, making it cheaper than many Kindle books.

Amazon says –

"All trails became dead ends. Tips that had at first seemed urgent now faded away. The waiting game began. Whoever had the manuscripts would want money, and a lot of it. They would surface eventually, but where and when, and how much would they want?

The most daring and devastating heist in literary history targets a high security vault located deep beneath Princeton University. Valued at $25 million (though some would say priceless), the five manuscripts of F. Scott Fitzgerald's only novels are amongst the most valuable in the world. After an initial flurry of arrests, both they and the ruthless gang of thieves who took them have vanished without trace. Dealing in stolen books is a dark business, and few are initiated to its arts - which puts Bruce Kable right on the FBI's Rare Asset Recovery Unit's watch list.

A struggling writer burdened by debts, Mercer Mann spent summers on Florida's idyllic Camino Island as a kid, in her grandmother's beach cottage. Now she is being made an offer she can't refuse: to return to the peace of the island, to write her novel - and get close to a certain infamous bookseller, and his interesting collection of manuscripts.."

Audio book of the week – Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch. Wow this guy is thrilling us with his imagination! The fifth of the PC Peter Grant series was again narrated amazingly well by Kobna Holdbrook Smith. This time two vanished girls lead Peter and his squeeze Beverly Brook, the spirit of a river in South London, to the Black Country and a tale filled with more marvellous magic and crime rolled into one. Kobna is superb once more. I really must look out for more by this narrator whilst I’m waiting for the 6th audiobook to appear. Ben recently wrote an article in the Mail about the places he’s been researching to do with ghosts in and around London so it promises to be a good one! Can’t wait.

It’s currently number 199 in kindle store in the UK and top 2 in the niche fantasy charts and deservedly so.

Read it Write it Sell it – my weekly look at all things book – LA update

If you didn’t see my home news on Monday, with the fab hummingbird pics, I’ve been on hol! One of the reasons I went to LA was to write. Had a great intensive writing session whilst away in LA too – tons sorted, as well as four blogs and lots of editing! For those who don’t know, my first three romance novels – the steamy ones! – have been signed up by Choc Lit the UK publisher, and the first one ‘Hawaiian Affair’ is going through editing now, to re-issue it early next year.

Plus as the Hawaiian Trilogy PG countdown continues, I’ve been working on finishing the PG version of the whole trilogy in paperback for release for Christmas presents early December. One more week till the cover reveal!

So I’ve been doing those edits as well as working on the plot for ‘French or Dutch,’ the series of novellas I’m planning about life in the 1920s - a cross between Mr Selfridge, Call the Midwife and Downton Abbey. Plus I like to meet new people.

Tough Times for Scriptwriters in Hollywood Well I met two lovely new contacts whilst out there, one of whom is a scriptwriter for films called Valerie Alexander. She’s kindly sent me some of her work to look at which I love doing – when I was with Mr Back of my Tandem I proofed a lot of his screenplays too; (long story if you don’t know it, but basically an old BF who used to be a scriptwriter – it was because of him a couple of years ago that I visited LA often.) Always good to meet new contacts eh? She’s a contact via Nick Barrucci – the comics guy, remember him? – well he’s now involved in creating superhero film ideas. His manager also met me, to discuss ‘the business.’ Very interesting chats and great new contacts. The overriding theme that came through from industry people during my visit is how much harder it is to make a living nowadays for jobbing scriptwriters, especially since the Writers’ Strike. And more than ever sure fire hits seem to flounder at the final hurdle, despite having all the ducks in a row – some funding, producer, director, great script etc. Just backed up what Mr Back of my Tandem had to say, really, and one of the reasons why he left it. Perhaps TV is the way to go for many? Certainly with openings like Amazon Studios, where they are taking submissions for scripts the same way they take eBooks etc, but this time they’re considering their merits for possible production. More here. Interesting times.

Audio Book of the Week – Moon Over Soho

I have also been listening to ‘Moon over Soho,' the sequel to last week’s ‘Rivers of London’ and it’s great too. As always with sequels, not quite as gripping as book 1 in the ‘PC Peter Grant Book Series.’ But fun anyway and had an interesting theme focussing on old style jazz, plus some pretty graphic scenes, so kept me wanting to listen on to the next bit. Let’s face it, that’s half the battle! I’d give it around 8.25 out of ten. Another good listen from Ben Aaronovitch, but narration from Kobna Holdbrook-Smith makes it, for me.   Click here to see it on Amazon

Freebie Promotion Boosts Sales

Self publishers need visibility for their novels, don't they? Well how about this technique?

Last week, I mentioned my guest blog listing what you can do to help boost sales of a new book. Well my writing buddy, author Carolyn Mahony had great success with a recent freebie promotion. If your book is part of KDP select (you tick a box when you’re uploading the book) it gives several benefits, one of which is offering your book for free but it’s limited to five days every three months. Carolyn’s freebie on her only cosy crime novel so far, Cry From the Grave, ran when we did Hocus Pocus ’14 at end of October, and by the end of the five days, she was high up in the freebie charts. But as soon as it’s not free any more, you disappear off the charts, right? Not so – her freebie had a knock on effect that translated into sales, following on from a freebie. Why? Carolyn thinks that it’s because of the attention and exposure the book was getting, so that people late to the party still wanted to buy it, even though it wasn’t free. Then because of the niche genre, she appears high up in Amazon’s chart called ‘kindle/books/literature&fiction/women’s fiction/mystery,thriller&suspense/crime’ (yes, that’s a real niche chart!) But being high up in any chart increases ‘discoverability’ and that’s what it’s all about nowadays.

Now that there are sooo many titles and so many professional authors and publishers releasing their own back lists, the challenge is how to get noticed. This obviously helped. Carolyn’s top chart position in the overall UK Kindle chart was in the 800’s, quite a feat, considering it came from nowhere and was below 40,000 in that same chart before the freebie. Even more so when you see that it’s £2.56, not a 99p promotion or anywhere near. It’s a good book, of course, and the great reviews have increased in number, which is one more side benefit of so many copies getting out there from the freebie. Get Carolyn’s book here.

Have a fab week!

Had a fabulous weekend away. At the end of the two days at Julie Cohen and Rowan Coleman’s writing retreat in Somerset, I’d -

- completed over a quarter of the revisions to Hawaiian Affair, for my publisher Choc Lit

- finalised a new title for my WIP - a series of novellas based on a scandalous ideal in 1920's, a kind of Mr Selfridge meets Call the midwife meets Downton Abbey.

- worked out the theme, the byline for the front cover and covered off the plot arcs for the first seven novellas in the series and the overall first series arc.

- made lots of new pals

- heard some fabulous tips

- walked in a wood with Badger viewing areas, a woodland classroom and a pig you could stroke (I was surprised how warm its skin was – don’t know why I thought it would be cooler!)

- ate some fabulous food and avoided too much bad stuff, and even did a bit of Bodyblade in my lovely studio room that overlooked the rolling distant hills. Read more about it on my News blog from Sunday, here.

It’s how I write, getting away from it all. Then I can totally focus and not let life get in the way. Which it does for most of us of course. But some of the promised we made at the end of the course were a schedule of what we would do by when. And at least I know after the punishing schedule I had this year, that I am capable of it, even if it means little sleep and stiff shoulders! Now I’ve just got to do it!

Meanwhile the Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss book continues to sell well. I guess books in that genre always will. The thing is, what do you do when they… don’t? Joanna Penn wrote a feature about what to do if your book isn’t selling – more for first time self-publishers, but interesting none the less – find out more about the checklist she’s created after years of her own experiences. AudioBook of the Week – The Rivers of London

Ben Aaronovitch’s supernatural book came on the back of our Hallowe’en anthology, so I was just in the mood to read about river sprites and wizards and people being possessed – in a ‘cosy crime’ kind of way though – it’s a bit of both! But the star of the audiobook is the narrator – Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is definitely on my watch list now – his narration was funny, great accents, fabulous delivery and excellent timing. His Mr Punch voice is utterly spine chilling too! He lifted a good book to a great one – I’d listen to it again and there aren’t many I’d say that about! 9 out of ten from me. Here’s a taster:

“My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just a probationary constable in that mighty army for justice … the Metropolitan Police Service (known) as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – where you do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England…”

How to’s

Lots of people still asking advice about where to begin with self-publishing, naturally. There is a plethora of info out there. Notably some of the sites listed on my ‘beginner’s guide’ – see below. Just recently another person commented on the guest blog I did for The Creative Penn in April – asking about how to set up a readers group to help get reviews. This was my reply –

“Some beginner authors I know build up their social media platform, first, following and chatting to followers/readers of other authors who write in a genre similar to their own. Then you can ask if any of these new contacts could help with reviews. You may find, as I did, that you can form your own little beta readers group on Facebook.  (Relationship building is what social media is there for nowadays, of course, so a newcomer should in general be doing this anyway to build up their platform if they want to be taken seriously later by a publisher.) Good luck!”
