Well it's finally happened - the stitches are out! If you saw last week's picture 'one week after the op' you'll have seen the angry looking wound as it healed, with stitches resembling the Grinch's muzzle! (if not go here.)

On Wednesday, a fortnight after it was opened up, the now-almost-healed hole in my palm looked like this -

(pic to come)

It's amazing how the human body heals isn't it. Let's hope I hear no more from it and I can get back to writing my next book without getting pins and needles in my fingers. And back to QVC! this weekend is a biiiiig event - Black Friday with lots of bargains and temporary deals, so don't miss it. Previews are already posted here.

My new QVC blog will appear here on Friday, including a super elemis competition.

Girl's Road Trip

Had such a lovely time of it last week when my good pal Sheena allowed me to accompany her (as my driver!) on a two day trip to Kent then Surrey. We went on a journey to the beautiful Leeds Castle for a Medical Detection Dogs Presentation event. Go here to read more about the MDD event.

here are a couple of the pics from the fabulous trip -

After the Leeds castle event, Sheena and I went to my sis's spa for some pampering, then off to Dorking to my hairdresser Kay in Dare Hair, to wash it for me. I hadn't been able to do it myself 'cos my wound had to be kept dry! So it was lovely to have it all fresh ready for the evening's gala dinner. And a lovely stay in the Running Horses, Mickleham, including a superb claw footed bath!

and even on the way home we had some super sights to behold...

As they say - a good time was had by all!

Book of the Week

Well, last week I featured a super Xmas one from my writing pal Jules Wake - her 'Covent Garden in the Snow' is a bestseller on amazon, so why not give it a go? More here.

This week I am over the moon with my favourite ex-military cop Jack Reacher's latest from Lee Child. The hardback is out at same time as audiobook so I devoured it. Love the way Lee Child writes, and loved the new more caring twist he's included in this one. 'the Midnight Line' did not let me down, more here.

hope you have a great week!

Thanks to Claire Pearson, and her lovely dog Pal, had a fab time at the gorgeous surroundings of Leeds Castle in Kent on Wednesday 15th November.

My good pal Sheena drove me as my hand op was still healing (carpel tunnel) and we met the mayor and lady mayoress, Betsy Duncan Smith (patron) and many lovely medical detection dogs and their owners.

Go here to see the pics from the night, on a Facebook post

the choir sounded amazing

Founder Dr Claire Guest's explanation about these clever canines was fascinating as ever and the demo's included the latest - detecting specific bacterium on a swab. Go here to see it on the post I did on Facebook - you don't have to have a Facebook account to view it.

Claire Pearson's son gave a super account of what it was like to live with a mum who might collapse at any time, before MDD dog Pal arrived in their lives.

and claire's specialist describes his skepticism about dogs sniffing high or low blood sugar, before he encountered MDD

It was a super night and it was nice to catch up with so many of my MDD friends. The charity still needs much funding to continue their amazing work including into -

-prostate cancer detection

- malaria detection

- specific bacteria detection

- and parkinson's disease , early detection

and in the future even breast cancer, which ties in with Dr Claire's original experience with her dog Daisy. 'daisy's gift' is the book chronicling the events that led to a nodule of deep seated cancer being discovered in Claire's own breast and how Daisy's early detection saved Claire's life.

Much of their news is reported in the regular editions of their magazine,  'Sniff' magazine - read it all online here, including at some stage about Leeds Castle, no doubt.

Visit their site for xmas cards too - some lovely pics this year.

So proud to be involved with such an amazing charity.

Derek the Dog gets a match

At last, Derek the Dog has been matched with a diabetic owner in a new MDD partnership. Jason is a lovely chap and they are now going through their accreditation before they will be properly announced on the world. Since I donated enough funds to name a puppy, I have followed 'derek' - named after my late dad - and now two years later, he has finally attained his purpose. more soon...

This week I am over the moon with my favourite ex-military cop Jack Reacher's latest from Lee Child. The hardback is out at same time as audiobook so I devoured it. Love the way Lee Child writes, and loved the new more caring twist he's included in this one. 'the Midnight Line' did not let me down. He is one of my top authors so I will always leap at the chance to read the new one. Twenty two novels in, he's still compelling, compulsive and competent.

Jack Reacher takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It's tiny. It's a woman cadet's graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher's a West Pointer, too, and he knows what she went through to get it.

Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she's OK, he'll walk away. If she's not...he'll stop at nothing.

He's still shaken by the recent horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don't get in his way.

A more thoughtful novel, some think - take this review, from Amazon -

"Strangely enough, it is not action packed, but I think it his best book yet.
It made me think about returning combat veterans and the opioid addiction epidemic in the USA, wondering if those things were mirrored in the UK. Normally I know what to expect from Lee Child, but this was more - slightly darker. I recommend it heartily. Put your Reacher expectations to one side and appreciate the underlying story."

It always makes me very proud to say things like this.

My writing mate Jules, a fellow student from the superb Julie Cohen workshops, is  hitting the heights on Amazon . Her latest book is at number four on the Kindle chart! The main Kindle chart! That is huge! Just a couple of places behind Lee Child’s new one from Jack Reacher, which I am devouring on audiobook at present. If you fancy a wonderful warming winter read with a festive theme, check out this one.

Tilly Hunter has fabulous friends, her dream job as a make-up artist with a prestigious opera company and Felix, her kind and caring husband to be. It looks set to be the most perfect Christmas yet!

But when a monumental blunder forces her to work closely with new IT director Marcus Walker, it's not only the roast chestnut stalls on the cobbles of her beloved Covent Garden that cause sparks to fly…

Super serious and brooding, Marcus hasn’t got a creative bone in his sharp-suited body. For technophobe Tilly, it's a match made in hell.

And yet, when Tilly discovers her fiancé isn’t at all what he seems, it's Marcus who's there for her with a hot chocolate and a surprisingly strong shoulder to cry on … He might just be the best Christmas present she’s ever had.

Everyone is raving about Covent Garden in the Snow

Well, the dressing came off after one week, and thanks to some great advice from the surgeon who did the Carpell tunnel operation, to keep it elevated, the wound seems to be healing nicely. Here is the photo underneath the dressing –

Well what a saga! Had my hand operation in the Nuffield in Exeter, and just as it was about to begin, when I was all cracked and the hand was numb and the surgeon was ready with the scalpel, the fire alarm sounded! Eek! Thankfully he did not make us get up and go out but sent someone to check what  was happening!  Then shortly after he began the operation to free up my carpal tunnel syndrome. And 10 minutes later it was over. Here is the 'after'  with the stitches,  along with the before...  and - look away now if you  are squeamish - the' during'!

Well now I have my arm in a sling and must not hang it down it for a week. No driving, for me, will be the hardest thing. My stitches come out in two weeks time. Then – a whole new hand! Fingers crossed… Watch this space…

Super days out this week - another lovely restful week down in Devon and the dogs loved the sea - twice!

See below for videos of how they got on in the waves - so funny seeing what Gracie did!

It's been a great week for relaxing and it kicked off with a special acupuncture session with my lovely pal Goody. She told me I have to focus on getting more quality sleep so I agreed. That's why on Wednesday morning, I ended up snoozing the alarm at 8.30. I'll get another half an hour, I thought. I don't have to leave till ten past ten. Next thing I know, I'm waking up and it's ten o'clock! But sleepcycle, the app I use to monitor my sleep, is confirming it's working and the average this week is over 8 hours. How much do you get? Have you a routine that helps you nod off?

One of the best things I've had recently has been the This Works spray at bedtime, and a comfy mattress topper. Also I find now it's cold I'm loving a hot water bottle on  me tootsies! What about you?

Devon Beach Days

So many gorgeous sunny Autumn days recently. Lots of places to go to give my poggies a treat. Daisy and Gracie are funny - very sociable and want to say hello to as many people as they can when we are out. Not all the dogs want to say hello back however!

This was on Widemouth beach on Monday afternoon, when Gracie saw the sea and decided it was bath time! click here to watch it on my vlog. Plus, also on my official Facebook page, a post with another dozen pics of the pogs at the beach and some beautiful sunset shots - click here. (Don't forget to 'like' the page whilst you're there to avoid missing updates!)

Then on Wednesday Sheena and I visited Northcott bay, on the other side of Bude in Cornwall, just over the border with Devon. It was very pebbly, with some amazing geology, and the dogs had fun in the surf. These waves were crashing to the shore in typical Cornish coastal fashion, and it wasn't long before Gracie was in again - even though she wasn't quite ready for the bigger ones!

click here to Gracie in the crashing waves on youtube video.

Book of the week

Well it was Hallowe'en this week and I went to an interesting talk, see below. BUT my book of the week is Hubble Bubble, a fun rom com by one of my fave authors, Jane Lovering. Its not a Hallowe'en story, so ok to read when you like! Good fun read and really witty turn of phrase as ever from Jane. More here.

And the winner of last week's competition is to be announced shortly

Really enjoyed this rom com romp from talented and witty author Jane Lovering. Jane is on my 'must-read' list, whereby I watch out for new books by that person, or in my case, new audiobook productions of their library.

This one was first published by Choc Lit in 2013, just as the wave of ebooks was exploding and received some impressive reviews. It's based on a type of 'serendipity' theme, with a touch of amateur witchcraft thrown in, and as usual features Jane's trademark turns of phrase that make me smile to myself or laugh out loud as I'm driving along in the car.

"Holly Grey joined the woman's group to keep her friend out of trouble - and now she's knee-deep in hassle, in the form of apocalyptic weather, armed men and midwifery.

Kai has been drawn to darkest Yorkshire by his desire to find out who he really is.

What he hadn't bargained on was getting caught up in amateur magic and dealing with a bunch of women who are trying really hard to make their dreams come true."

Her more recent books have been even more well crafted, so do check out Jane's back list too.

I've been told there are

What do you do for Hallowe'en? Anything? I do love this pic, taken three years ago at the launch party of a special spooky anthology. It was such fun - mind you, masks are always easier than makeup right?

I don't generally do much for Hallowe'en - but I will be in Devon without any guests this year, so maybe we will have some trick or treaters! It'll be the first year in a long time since my last two houses were actually quite remote so we never got any visitors! That's after many years where the tradition in my Banstead house, quite close to other houses where kids live, was that all Laurens cousins came round, dressed up, and went off with their little cauldrons! So should I get a bumper bundle of treats? Or be prepared for some tricks? What do you think? Shame I haven't got this mask any more since I might be able to lie in wait behind the door for them... mwahhahaaa! That's the sort of thing my dad would have done anyway!

Nevertheless as it's next week, here's a treat of my own for you - a smashing offer!
