Super days out this week - another lovely restful week down in Devon and the dogs loved the sea - twice!

See below for videos of how they got on in the waves - so funny seeing what Gracie did!

It's been a great week for relaxing and it kicked off with a special acupuncture session with my lovely pal Goody. She told me I have to focus on getting more quality sleep so I agreed. That's why on Wednesday morning, I ended up snoozing the alarm at 8.30. I'll get another half an hour, I thought. I don't have to leave till ten past ten. Next thing I know, I'm waking up and it's ten o'clock! But sleepcycle, the app I use to monitor my sleep, is confirming it's working and the average this week is over 8 hours. How much do you get? Have you a routine that helps you nod off?

One of the best things I've had recently has been the This Works spray at bedtime, and a comfy mattress topper. Also I find now it's cold I'm loving a hot water bottle on  me tootsies! What about you?

Devon Beach Days

So many gorgeous sunny Autumn days recently. Lots of places to go to give my poggies a treat. Daisy and Gracie are funny - very sociable and want to say hello to as many people as they can when we are out. Not all the dogs want to say hello back however!

This was on Widemouth beach on Monday afternoon, when Gracie saw the sea and decided it was bath time! click here to watch it on my vlog. Plus, also on my official Facebook page, a post with another dozen pics of the pogs at the beach and some beautiful sunset shots - click here. (Don't forget to 'like' the page whilst you're there to avoid missing updates!)

Then on Wednesday Sheena and I visited Northcott bay, on the other side of Bude in Cornwall, just over the border with Devon. It was very pebbly, with some amazing geology, and the dogs had fun in the surf. These waves were crashing to the shore in typical Cornish coastal fashion, and it wasn't long before Gracie was in again - even though she wasn't quite ready for the bigger ones!

click here to Gracie in the crashing waves on youtube video.

Book of the week

Well it was Hallowe'en this week and I went to an interesting talk, see below. BUT my book of the week is Hubble Bubble, a fun rom com by one of my fave authors, Jane Lovering. Its not a Hallowe'en story, so ok to read when you like! Good fun read and really witty turn of phrase as ever from Jane. More here.

And the winner of last week's competition is to be announced shortly

What do you do for Hallowe'en? Anything? I do love this pic, taken three years ago at the launch party of a special spooky anthology. It was such fun - mind you, masks are always easier than makeup right?

I don't generally do much for Hallowe'en - but I will be in Devon without any guests this year, so maybe we will have some trick or treaters! It'll be the first year in a long time since my last two houses were actually quite remote so we never got any visitors! That's after many years where the tradition in my Banstead house, quite close to other houses where kids live, was that all Laurens cousins came round, dressed up, and went off with their little cauldrons! So should I get a bumper bundle of treats? Or be prepared for some tricks? What do you think? Shame I haven't got this mask any more since I might be able to lie in wait behind the door for them... mwahhahaaa! That's the sort of thing my dad would have done anyway!

Free Spooky ebook for Hallowe'en

Nevertheless as it's next week, here's a treat of my own for you - a smashing offer! A free ebook - filled with spooky short stories, (mystical rather than gory) available for five days on Amazon, from 27th till Hallowe'en. Click here to read all about it and also to find out how to take part in the simple to enter competition to win a paperback copy of the book, Hocus Pocus '14 - over on the RiWiSi page this week. It's been written by award winners, best sellers and some 'true life tales' as well - all with a twist. Hope you manage to download it onto your kindles before the free offer runs out! more here.

Also over on my new QVC blog another chance to win a copy, this time including a box of delicious Devon fudge, from my trip to Powderham castle last week for the lucky winner, chosen at random from everyone posting a comment on the qvc website on that blog. More info will be here on my QVC blog launching on Friday

just finishing the final (7th) Clifton Chronicles – This Was A Man. I have really enjoyed them. Jeffrey Archer is such a superb storyteller and it was sad to come to the end of the series. So now I’m on to the brand new one from Dan Brown. Just out, Origin is another twisting and turning tale that intertwines historical fact and his own brand of ‘faction’. So far so good – review next week.

This Was A Man takes us right into the 1980s, to the fall of the Berlin Wall and intertwines our characters into the factual events of the era. I have found myself wanting to continue listening to the audiobooks more with this series than with mos of the other books I've heard in the last few years. I think because once you buy into the family saga, you just want more, the familiarity keeping you hooked. Worth remembering if you are an author thinking about your next move.

CONCERT IN AID OF MEDICAL DETECTION DOGS

It all went really well, when, on September 16th at a concert at The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington, Devon, the Eric Gilchrist Jazz Trio and I raised over £1000 for Medical Detection Dogs - what a wonderful way to have fun and also to raise money. We were joined by local dignitary and celeb Barry 'the Singing Councillor' Parsons who sang songs from the musicals too, and he was fab. Thanks to Sheena Ryder co-organiser too for her stellar work including with the raffle on the night. I loved having my daughter Lauren there also, with her new hubby Nick - they came for a break and it was my pleasure to look after her and the band as guests at Retreats for You my writing retreat/guest house - including making full cooked breakfast and homemade bread as I normally would for my regular guests. But the band performed for free and the venue just took a contribution towards their fundraising too and all in all it was a great night. (I'm glad it's over now though I must admit - 'cos I'm knackered!! lol.) Plus we had the tea rooms event the day after ... thanks to everyone who came along.

Go here to watch the live Facebook video of the rehearsal - basically all of the first half of my performances.

Go here to watch the videos of the performances - i can dream can't I? - and a little bit of My Baby Just Cares for Me ! lol.

Plus we did Cheek to Cheek and You can always Count on Me and I only have eyes for you. And a duet - kind of - Something Stupid.

Go here to read the local press review afterwards - Crediton Chronicle

Go here to  read more about MDD.

The next big event for MDD will be in November, when I attend the big Leeds Castle fundraising dinner.

TEA ROOMS

We also then had a tea rooms event again at my place on the Sunday - it's all go! It was the best-attended, yet - with a total of over £1000 raised for Medical Detection Dogs.

Go here to see a short video - we were packed!

Thanks to everyone who came and made it possible to raise so much again, over such a short space of time.

Very grateful

So are Medical Detection Dogs!

Book of the Week - well, more like Book of the  Month really - book series, that is. It's excellent and it's the Clifton Chronicles series by Jeffrey Archer. It's an eight book series, beginning in the 1920s and now I'm on book 6 and am up to the 1970s. It's thoroughly enjoyable and makes me realise just how much more agony I have to put my own characters through to create a dramatic page turning effect! more here on my RiWiSi blog...

Recent Retreats

Well, what a busy week I just had! Seven people and me, and most of the week I was looking after them totally on my own as Wendy was on her hols! Thanks to Linda for covering when I had to go back to London, too. When I first took over the guest house and writing retreat, I was a bit scared of the catering side, I must admit. Cos I had a family with two kids in and cooked relatively plain stuff. Now it has to be biiiig dishes and it has to be right! But I'm getting there! This week's was with the fabulous writing mentor Julie Cohen, who is my own mentor - such a genius and master of show not tell. The writers were very happy with everything that happened and that made me happy too! Go here to see more on a facebook post.

Plus we have done several Yoga ones, and have loved every minute of them. So we have two more soon!

Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer. I used to read Jeffrey Archer books years ago and spotted this one. Since it’s set partly in the 1920s, the era of the current book I’m writing, I listened to the audio book this week and boy is it good! Typical poor boy done good with a family secret that changes everything type story and am loving it.

"The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer's most ambitious work in four decades as an international best-selling author. The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, 'I was told that my father was killed in the war.' But it will be another 20 years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question: who was his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

Only Time Will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. Volume One takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany."

Volume 2 next!

What a super trip I had down to see the MDD gang again last week. They are powering ahead with so many new areas of research including Zika virus/malaria, Parkinsons and of course the original Prostate Cancer studies - in conjunction with the NHS - so they will be an official part of the screening in years to come.

I caught up with Dr Claire Guest and heard some of the latest plans - but they really need funding to make it all happen.

And met some new puppies - little Ilsa and Banjo were just two of the newcomers. I love them!

I predict that in ten years time, THIS will be THE charity everyone is talking about, maybe including early breast cancer detection, who knows. But for now, it's a pleasure and a great source of pride to be an ambassador.
